That’s not nice. They may be a nightmare for our veg and flowers but they play a really important part in the eco system. I go round on a damp evening with my torch and gather them up and take them away to a weedy grassy area nearby. At least then some other animal might have a chance of a nice meal… hedgehogs for example. 😀😀

I haven't seen any other allotment youtuber actually perform a scientific experiment with the various popular tips and suggestions on deterring slugs and snails....on an actual snail! Hilarious results! Also, I have to say, aside from the acknowledgement of the destruction they incur on all of us gardeners, I did find your snail rather cute!

The only thing I found that worked are the pellets, there are some that break down naturally in the soil if you are worried about the environment. Additionally if you can be bothered is to make up a garlic spray but you'll need to keep applying it.

I use organic slug pellets, my garden used to be overrun with snails and slugs and nothing survived, i only use them while the plants are seedlings, then i stop using them, they can be used in organic vegetable gardening and are not poisonous to pets or wildlife, the slug eats the pellet then stops eating and go underground to die so you dont get the slimey mess like you do with chemical slug pellets, theyre great for keeping the slug population down, ive been using them for about 3 or 4 years now and its been a game changer

When u plant anything especially tomato plant dig your hole put plenty of water in before the plant and don't water for a week or so. This makes the roots stronger as they go deeper looking for water. Put the oil onto the wool

Brilliant. Loved the experiment. Well done little snail, hope you enjoyed your well deserved meal. I think a combination of controls works best. For example, beer traps and egg shells, or copper tape and strultch. I figure they get fed up trying if you hit them with lots of deterrents. Well, some do anyway. Have you tried anti slug halos? They are plastic rings that you put round plants. They have a lip that slugs find it hard to get round. Maybe try these for your more prized specimens. All the best. Mags
@emmasallotmentdiaries

I going to hazard a guess the compost on your bed with the mushrooms and abundant weeds is from B&Q's own range of compost. It used to be reasonable, but I stopped using it a few years ago as it grew weeds faster than veg and was full of plastic and lumps of timber. Oh the mushrooms apparently are free with it but I'm not sure if they are safe to eat. So for a little bit more money I got one of the more mainline compost brands. Less time spent pulling weeds

Another snail/slug deterrent is to try horticultural (potting) grit around snail-susceptible plants: not shingle, which is rounded, but washed horticultural grit which is generally very angular and should make it as difficult as possible for the snail to cross! It’s also good for the soil. As slugs/snails are moisture loving creatures water plants early in the day rather than the evening, so the ground has had time to dry out a lot as they tend to tuck into your plants during the night when it’s cooler.
@emmasallotmentdiaries

Cut plastic soft drink bottles in half, use to cover the plants that slugs and snails like, beer traps work beer in a dish bury so the lip is at ground level. Create a warm, dark, dry home for them then check every week over winter, during the summer they prefer a damp, cool spot, a piece of board placed in among your vegetables and check daily. Starlings work but drive me nuts because they are scratching in the garden all the time, but very little slug or snail damage.
