these videos are my favorite.. BTS out in the street/world, paired with the end result photo, paired with some talking in the studio about it all. also the photo of the family on the rocks at 4:42 is seriously incredible, someone needs to find the family so you can sell them a print.

street photography is the hardest type of photography in my eyes. brain has to fire on all cylinders. feels amazing when you get some sweet shots back. good on you for going out of your comfort zone! thanks for sharing. your videos are always a visual treat.

Street photography is extremely addictive! I started to pursue it a little over a year ago. It has really helped with my overall photography (it made me much more observant). Very cool to see your take on the genre ✌🏼.

Hey WV, I think your results for your first venture into street shooting are excellent. You clearly have a good eye. It is an addictive genre. For me, mainly because I get to interact with people. Plus the challenge of framing and timing each shot is so different from other types of photography. Every time I go out to shoot I’m nervous. So the first thing I do is find someone who seems approachable and strike up a conversation and then ask for a photo. This breaks the ice. After a few such encounters I am in the flow and just walk and shoot: sometimes candids, sometime asking for a portrait. As you discovered, a day of street shooting can be very enjoyable and fulfilling even if one doesn’t come back with many (or any) keepers. Just being out with people is rewarding. Keep at it, you certainly have the eye for it. P.S., one of the best places to get great images when attending a parade is in the marshaling area where every one is trying to get lined up. In the ordered confusion, no one will pay any attention and you can get close to the participants. Plus, your images will be very different from the sidewalk shots of the parade itself. P.P.S., my favorite image is the one with the man in Stars and Stripes overalls with his arms outstretched Cheers.

Good video mate. I empathise with you when you say you don't feel comfortable getting up in people's grill but you know its necessary to shoot the style. I feel the same when I shoot street. I find when I'm travelling to foreign countries i'm already out of my comfort zone and that helps give me the push I need, as well as the motivation you get from shooting some quality photo's throughout the day. Would love to see you tackle more street photography!

I was a full time assistant back in the 70s within a 14 studio (drive in, still life, room set) commercial studio complex set within a victorian London mews location. No digital back then, just analogue heaven shooting Sinar 10x8 / 5x4, and Blads all day long.

The video was amazing, and please do more street photography! The pictures you showed in the video were amazing and it would be so cool to see more stuff like that from you!

In 10-15 years, when Willem is known as the spiritual succesor to the great street photographers of the last century, I will utter, repeatedly and without end, I was there when the first video dropped. Rockport isn't far from my home and is a frequent shooting destination. Amazingly, one of the still images from that shoot captures a person I know! I find that "tourist towns" are the best place to practice street shooting of people - they are more relaxed and have more expectations of being photographed. Great video, as usual, Willem! Andy

You have a good eye and that clearly translates into candid photography (call it street photography) Ofc there are lots of factors to take into account to make a great image, sometimes being luck, most of the time is being in the right place at the right time which requires experience, having a good approach to people, feeling out the environment

Yeah definitely events are great for social up close photography people are more willing to be social and have their picture taken without feeling uncomfortable 📸😊👍🏻

Two excellent photos of that family crossing the rocks. Do more street, as I believe you got it! Predicting what people do is a talent -- you may have such a gift. Once you understand photography in general and have done so many landscapes, you will most likely ready to learn the street in a shorter time frame. You don't need to simultaneously learn the camera and the street techniques, as you are already half the way to being the street photographer. Those 10,000 shots already done. 🤓. Let me warn you that once you start, you simply can't quit. The people and downtown vibe = wonderful.

Love the video, lots of great info here & wonderful photos (love the Subbie too). It’s so much more rewarding when you step outside your comfort zone & it pays off. It’s so interesting when people are apprehensive to try street photography. I discovered photography via street photography so that’s always been my default. What terrifies me is portrait & wedding work, the pressure of other people’s expectations just gives me anxiety thinking about it. I’d much rather approach a scary looking random stranger on the street than to shoot someone’s wedding or portraits.

For streetphotography, I can recommend Cartier Bresson “Le Moment Décesif”

Good on you for trying something new, Willem. Street photography is tricky because you're constantly balancing moving targets (mostly people) and trying to capture the essence of a moment, which given how dynamic people are, can be incredibly fleeting. But you're an incredible photographer, and I know you'll do amazing the more you practice! Thanks for sharing as usual!

How/where do you develop your films? I have a load of 35mm rolls in my freezer. I love your attempt at people photography. I am scared shit to try, but, if you won't mind giving few details re: the shot where the family with the girl's foot almost touching the ground.
