Jack stauber really embraces the whole thing with "art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed."

Fun fact: the sound coming from the attic is named "crying" on the official soundtrack, so it's most likely Claire's own crying that we're hearing

Another thing that supports the “Claire doesn’t know what to do with a burger and is malnourished” theory, is her head shape. We can see in the billboard that the healthy family has big round heads, while Claire’s looks more like a deflated ball on top of a pencil.

What's most upsetting about OPAL is that there are a lot of Claires out there in similar situations who need help, because I know I did.

What i love about Opal is that while some other bits of media talking about the topic might soften itself to attempt to avoid being stressful to watch (which isnt always bad, tbf) this takes the exact opposite approach, and makes it troubling to look at, even before the message becomes clear. It WANTS you to be uncomfy at best, even if you've never experienced this kind of neglect. Its specifically looking to avoid accidentally sugar-coating the issue, and i appreciate the hell outnof it

What's crazy for most tho is people that haven't went through it are uncomfortable and the people that went through it are really comfortable I myself experienced it a little and I don't really know how to explain it I just like coming back to this video it makes me feel comfortable oddly enough 💀

More people need to react to this. Everything about this short is hauntingly brilliant. I interpreted the lyric, “They turned me down, now I live my nightmare” as the father did try to call for help over his wife’s drunken rampage, since we did see someone dialing 911 during the mother’s lullaby. But when he reported her, the police brushed him off because “a woman can’t hurt a man”. He got ignored during his time of need and is left with a scarred face. That helplessness made him spiral, and he grew self-centered to build up a bravado to hide just how insecure and scared he really is. In a way, he is indeed a victim, but his methods of coping make him hurt Claire.

There is a theory that the father is so obsessed with his looks because of possible domestic abuse from the mother. It happens very quickly but between the father's and mother's songs and the split second shots, we can see someone possibly being hit and also the 911 phone call. It is also backed by the lyric "They turned me down, now I live my nightmare." possibly meaning either the police being called or maybe a hotline and then them not believing the father. This could maybe be a commentary on men more likely to not be taken seriously as much in situations like these. Idk, it's just something I've picked up on between rewatches and review on Opal, both sad and interesting none the less.

I also find it interesting that unlike the grandfather and the mother, Opal/Claire isn't as scared of the father and only ran away when the grandfather was coming up the stairs unlike the other two family members where she ran away solely because of how scared she was of them.

@rorvgames6491 Месяц назад
@@KL-ki8db yeah but the father just stays in place. She runs from the grandfather because He tries to hold her and chases her, and she runs from her mother because she tried to beat her with a bottle. The father just stays in place until she runs, because he wants attention

Great video! Opal is definitely Jack's magnum opus, but I definitely wouldn't complain with more content on his work. His 2018 album, HiLo, is probably his best musical moment for me; it shows that he's not just good at the short catchy jingles he puts in Opal or his RU-vid videos, but he is a great experimental musician in general.

it always gets me how in her fantasy world, she doesn't even dream about them saying things like "we love you" or "we care for you" - they say, "we see you, opal." she literally just wants to be seen, to be perceived as a person. jack stauber is one of my favorite artists of all time - he definitely didn't work alone on this but I know he does all the music and voices for this and the way he combines animation, claymation/stopmotion, and videos is so haunting and interesting in this work and in others.

I'm delightfully surprised to see you cover Jack Stauber. I remember watching Opal as I'd been a big fan of his work for a while and I was a mess after. Opal was incredibly thought out and I really appreciate Jack for that. Jack Stauber is an amazing artist and I think you would enjoy his other works too! Most people start out with the album Pop Food as it contains his most popular tracks, Buttercup and Oh Klahoma (there's a high chance you've already heard them if you watch short content like reels, tik toks, etc.). If you're looking for more animated works by Jack I'd also recommend watching SHOP: A Pop Opera. Gonna go on another little ramble here but HiLo is such a good album too and there's a very sweet backstory to one of the songs: John & Nancy. There's a video on RU-vid by RecordBreaker301 that explains the story behind John & Nancy and if you're interested in knowing more about Jack Stauber's work I'd highly recommend checking it out.

I think one of my favorite things about Opal is the art. When watching the first time, it's easy to accept Claire as our protagonist. All of the characters look odd so Claire's appearance can easily be excused as "well that's probably just what kids look like in this universe." Then the reveal of the Opal billboard shows that no. Kids don't have malformed heads with thin wispy hair and have their eyes take up 75% of their heads. Well, not healthy ones at least. From the beginning, just looking at Claire shows the neglect she faces yet we as the audience didn't know that. It's just amazing what that little bit of context does to the short and I love it.

Those first statements; "I wanna go home" and "Don't look at her" ring different after fully watching and processing the film. I found it to be more disturbing watching it the 2nd time, knowing the ending's profound message and the reality of what I'd just watched. It should truly be watched twice, as the same story and media have significantly different meanings and tone once one knows what is going on, despite being the exact same film.
