I get asked pretty regularly about my defensive tools when I travel, specifically when in the secure area of an airport. Of course you can’t take firearms or OC spray or that stuff, but there ARE TSA Approved defensive tools available. Here I show two of them in the airport, a security umbrella and a great flashlight that doubles as a kubotan and low level force option.

Ok, but who truly needs a military grade assault umbrella in an airport??!? I've heard that if you throw those things strong enough, you can take out a liver, a spleen, or even blow the lung right out of the body!!! :0

Things *NOT* to say in an airport, "Gun." "Hi, Jack!" (while greeting your friend) "TSA is as useless as teats on a boar hog." "Weapon" "God is Great." (In *ANY* language.)

Belt. Always wear a belt. Im telling you, if you get a buckle smashed across your arms or head, you will retreat. And yes, you will have to take it off for the metal detector, but after that you are in the clear. Another item is the actual back pack itself. You can take it off and run one arm through the straps and use it like an old roman shield which leaves the other hand free. Or just use both hands on the straps and use it to push and deflect with. Lastly, I travel with a tripod for photography. And that can be used as either a baton/ club style weapon as well as for defensive shielding to absorb blows.

I found of that when I carry my self defense cane, not only do I get thru TSA, but I almost have to fight off the baggage employees who want to take me to the head of the line and sometimes get me a wheelchair.

Cool umbrella. I picked up a couple of hardwood walking canes from Tractor Supply (U.S. Whip, 36” long, $14.99). I put a 1” rubber butt on the bottom. A cane is allowed everywhere and, God forbid, if needed in a defensive situation, is absolutely amazing. In the inner-city, the poor can not afford guns, ammo and all the fees and restrictions, so they carry canes. If you have to grab or control someone, press the rubber butt against the person’s clothing, twist the cane and “sweep” the person aside. Also, if you ever need a tool to reach out and smash something like a watermelon, done! I had knee issue so it does help. When not needed or I need two hands, the hook hangs on my belt. If someone approaches you, just rest the handle on your shoulder, grip the butt, and they will always choose to ask someone else “what time is it?”. Be well.

josh benware 👍, F-701 a true backup. Always with you, no eyebrows raised, almost zero risk of being confiscated, and you can wreck someone if you know what you're doing. For $5 to $7 at almost any office/school supplies store, it would be silly not to get a couple and train in how to deploy it in a high risk situation (I did)

Smart, great post bud. Simple titanium or stainless carabiner on your backpack always gets through. Placed in your hand around middle finger/knuckle area becomes a devastating single brass knuck force multiplier for striking. Just another tool that can help in a jam and is very low profile.

Nice. I bought my wife and I matching tactical LED flashlights that have the serrated bezel. They also have a very hard, sharp-cornered bottom to use as a kubotan. I made tactical kubotans for all the men and women at my bank and gave them to all the employees. They "oohed" and "ahhed" over them. They were gone in a half hour with an order for more, for family members. I don't charge, I make them for free. I usually make them from mesquite, and put hard, razor sharp points on the ends.

Being in a part of the world where you can potentially get in trouble for even defending yourself with your fists I have to think about this aaaallll the time. Over the years I've come up with inventive items with primary uses being benign. Including: heavy duty Selfie Stick. keychain laden with edc stuff including a leatherman squirt in pocket on the end of 20cms of paracord with carabiner attached to other end on belt loop. Detach it and Swing it around like a madman from the carabiner end if attacked. Secateurs, small folding shovels etc as work tools in backpack while going to and from work via train or bike. The obvious tac flashlight. Never illegal to carry a flashlight. Plenty of other grey man options I use but they're the main ones.

I always had a right angle flashlight, (has 2 D cell batteries) and two extra batteries and a a pair of extra socks. Two D cell batteries (or four if time permits) in a sock is a formidable weapon when you swing it. That was my better than nothing weapon when I had to fly commercial in the military. (After 911)

I tend to carry, onto airplanes, a bookweight. I read a lot and find it useful. There are various types, you can find them onlline. Typically they're made of leather (sometimes rubber, sometimes something else) and they're flexible, because they won't work if they aren't. You lay them across the book you're reading, and they hold the pages down, Useful when you're doing something else while reading; typically with me it's when I'm in a restaurant by myself, eating. They also make an awesome cosh. The one I have that I like the best is 4 pieces of heavy metal (I think lead) covered in leather sewn into place, with a fifth panel of a square of leather in between the four "links". The links are attached to one another by pieces of metal. I've had it for about 15-20 years, and as far as I know you can't get this type online any more, but you can get others. Barnes and Noble sells them, they tend to run $15-20.

I don't know what the actual statistics and it varies by State/city but I think they're pretty rare especially if you're following the principal of not doing stupid things with stupid people at stupid times. However.....as the saying also goes.....violence isn't always the answer, but when it is, it's the only answer and it's better to be equipped than to be caught without. For daily life, tactical pens are great! Heck, a few of them actually make for fantastic EDC pens for jotting something down. For the airport?.... Don't even bother. I'm not TSA, but due to the nature of my job; I work somewhat closely with a few of them on a nightly basis. They're trained to look for those pens which are specifically marketed as tactical or Self-Defense pens. Better option is to go for an all metal pen that is inexpensive *and* simply marketed as a pen. Brushed stainless steel version of the Parker Jotter being a perfect example. It's just a pen. Sold and marketed as just a pen. A trip to Staples should help you come up with other examples of "just a pen." But do a bit of research. A few years ago, some in S.D. community were raving about the Zebra F-701 as an ideal S.D. pen that isn't marketed as such. It looks solid. But actually isn't. Plastic insert used inside the pen to mate the knurled section with the rest of the body of the pen. Looks tough and solid, but isn't.

A 1 ounce fishing sinker and a 36" cord with a knot at one end. Insert cord thru sinkers opening, knot keeps it on (no tying needed) and viola, a pretty mean weapon. If stopped by police or TSA, quickly pull cord from sinker and separate them. There's no indication/proof of it being a damn good weapon.

A coin purse is another wise investment. People always need change for one reason or another, take out the coins before you hit the checkpoint, put something small and harmless like chapstick inside, and keep the change in a Ziploc until you clear security. Advantages over pocket sticks are they require a lot less precision to use effectively, and can potentially do a lot of damage, (I actually nearly vaporized a mouse in the kitchen with mine last month.) Some of the leading examples of the style are the foster's coin purse and the mean gene leather hot tamale family. It's also worth noting that they just came out with one patterned after a neck wallet that would be perfect for carrying passports, boarding passes, etc.
