TSS #7 vs #9 Tested | Long Range Ballistics Gel & Patterning

Is #7 TSS ammo better than #9 for turkey hunting? Some believe that #9 shot is better at long range because of higher pattern density while others affirm #7 pellets are better for long shots because they carry more energy and do more damage. To find out, I pattern test BOSS Tom TSS #7 and #9 tungsten super shot at 40 yards and 60 yards and then ballistics gel test them both at long range to see which is best.

For this test I used BOSS Tom #7 and #9 copper plated TSS, 2.5 oz in 3" shells traveling at 1050 fps. I did the test at an official shooting range with ear and eye protection using my Mossberg 940 Pro Turkey with a Holosun 507k Red Dot and Muller UFO/Turkey choke tube. Waterfowl hunters should also take notice of this test. BOSS provided the shells tested in this video at my request, and Holosun provided the optic, thanks to them for their support.#turkeyhunting #waterfowlhunting #duckhunting

Interesting. I use TSS 8s. Started with them a few years ago and the results in the field are amazing. Regular full choke I don’t use turkey chokes and I won’t shoot over 40 yards. 8s drops em! I did use 9s a couple of times when I couldn’t get 8s. ALL clean kills. So both are good but I did just get. Box of 8s for next spring and am happy about that. YES I test pattern every load spec I’ve ever used since 78 and yes the tungsten too but they’re one shot at 40 all confidence proven. Appreciate your homework. Thanks and Good Hunting.

Awesome video George, kind of the point I was getting at last week on the apex vs Federal. I went with the higher oz load simply for more pellets in the 10in circle. But I started with the federal #7s and can 2nd what you said when I switched to the 9s. Similar pattern efficiency but the pellet counts were drastically more in the #9 which is exactly why I switched as soon at Vermont changed their laws.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide From my understanding, in VT, it was due to old school thinking, these new and potentially unproven technologies (8,9,10 shot TSS) not being lethal and potentially injuring animals. After a bit of lobbying and seeing other states adapt, we came around pretty fast. NY just changed last year, I believe. I was planning an out of state hunt next month and they still had #2-8 on their website, I had to email and ask them to change it to the new law they just passed. - I'd assume it is the same reason why many states dont let you shoot. 410 (which VT does even before the TSS shot, which is interesting)

Where I hunt here in Georgia I never get shots at turkeys over 30 yards and I have had coyotes (especially recently) come in to my hen calls at 15 to 20 yards. The effect of brush on pellets is still a bit of a mystery. That would be a good future test. As of now, I cannot say for sure. I would think the 7s would have a margin of energy that leaves would do less to inhibit. But if it matters enough to make a difference within these ranges, I'm not sure.

I need some advice. Finally got out and patterned by shotgun for turkey season. My shots at all ranges are hitting high and left. No enough to prevent pellets in the kill zone, but not as dense as I would like. Because this isn't a dedicated turkey gun, mounting an optic isn't really an option. Do I just employ a little 'Kentucky Windage' and aim low and right of where I want to hit? Thanks.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
Two main options are yes, a little Kentucky Windage is the easy way out. The other is to check your shotgun for fit. It could be that your length of pull, cast, or drop are off which is pushing things off for your point of aim. Here is a video on that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gCkRSsy24QY.html& The other thing could just be the ammo you are using. The day I shot this test video, I did 2 other test videos, and all 3 brands of ammo had a different point of impact with the same red dot settings. Your fit could be good, it may be the ammo.

68% more pellets @ 40 yards, but let's look at how much TSS actually hit a 10" circle @ 40 yards. 2.5 oz x 39% #7 load = 0.975 oz of TSS hits the 10" circle. 2.5 oz x 34% #9 load = 0.85 oz of TSS hits the 10" circle. @ 60 yards - #7 = 0.475 oz vs #9 = 0.325 oz. More of the #7 payload actually hit the 10" circle at both distances. When I shoot lead, I prefer #5 over #4 or #6. When I shoot TSS, I like #8 over #7 or #9 in a 12 gauge load. I may prefer #9 TSS in a smaller gauge.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 3 месяца назад
That approach on the math makes sense, but I think it should be reserved for longer range applications. The sheer pellet count of the #9s is all that matters at distance when its penetration is beyond ample. When you get to the fringes, then looking are weight of shot on target starts to be more helpful of a calculation. At 40 yards, #9 TSS is really as effective as BB shot on a turkey head/neck, pellet per pellet. At 60+ yards, then your formula comes into play nicely.

Excellent test and comparison. It's hard to get people to see the benefits of tungsten using a small pellet size. Initial assumptions are hard to overcome. You can always suggest going the other way. That is, use large light (steel) shot. Why not? Bigger and lower density is better, right? I now realize why most companies offer 7s and 9s (but no 8s). It's all about marketing. Some people understand the benefits of using 9s. However, there are many people that just won't even consider such a small shot size. So, you need to capture that part of the market with 7s.

@TheNewHuntersGuide 4 месяца назад
Going smaller on the pellets is a good idea for sub gauges that aren't trying to get to the absolute max range. For big 12 gauge shells, it seems like 9s or 8.5s are about the sweet spot for optimum pattern and range efficiencies. I have some longer range testing coming soon as well. For normal range shooting, going smaller has no down side.@@drjmwilson

Even living close to the edge like I do, that's still only 4 birds in 2 states per year, assuming you're a 2 state license holder *and* are able to cluck one in 4 times. Not a lot of shooting to get that average back down, is there? A bow starts to look really good at that point in the equation, especially around here where people make 15k a year, and those are the people doing 95% of the hunting. These people are just fine with 95% of that performance for less than 10% of the price. Hate to say it, but those much maligned 3.5 hulls you think are such a ripoff will do exactly the same patterns with bigger shot for, what.. 1/10th the price or so? 25% for heavy turkey loads? Hell, I'll even shit in the high cotton and reload something for you with plated Daisy airgun match grade BBs for less than a dollar a hull. *And you can bet your ass I'll be using the right wad for the hull as well, Boss.* You know, people also spend thousands of dollars a week on dirty street dope to shoot into themselves as well.. They enjoy what it gets them, but that doesn't mean it's not stupid.

9s all the way. My state only allows 7.5 or larger, like ancient history over here it's abysmal.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide We need lots of updating to our hunting rules. Can't hunt Sundays, can only hunt whitetails till sunset, no public rifle hunting, just .22 rimfire or smaller, can't bait coyotes or night hunt them etc. etc.

9’s passed 60 yards really drop in penetration my pattern with 7’s at 80 yards is sufficient and I have ample penetration 7’s are far better when hunting open fields where I hunt just get you a better choke and let it rip!!!!!!!!!

@@TheNewHuntersGuide no need I’m only concerned about the kill shot even if it’s only 50 count that doesn’t matter to me, if I shoot 10 targets and all 10 have only 3 killing pellets that’s still a 100% kill ratio, 90% of my kills come within 40 yards here in Louisiana you can’t see a bird at 60 yards to much cover. I also hunt Oklahoma, Kansas in open country and will shoot at 80yards with confidence

Those are terrible pattern numbers for each shot size. This totally skewed your test. You have at least 50% of your total payload in the 10 at 40 yards. I prefer 7.5s over 9s, but wouldn’t hunt with either of your setups in this vid. 🤦‍♂️
