This might be the best turkey ammo review I’ve ever seen. The one consistency I see between all the turkey ammo review videos is that magnum blend and long-beard XR are the top dogs.
Best comparison video on the web. Thanks for putting the time, energy and $ into this. I just bought a mossberg 835 and was unsure about what ammo to try.
Fantastic video. The discussion seems to always head down the path of "every gun is different". But they aren't that different and a good shell is a good shell for the most part. It's great to be able to learn from a video like this and save some money as well as shoulder meat. Thank you!
Excellent review PERIOD. Totally objective from beginning to end. Have experimented with the same ammo and leadsled combination myself although with a TC ProHunter 20ga. Max range for me was out to 40 yards. Same results ………. I have elected to stick with the Longbeard, they flat out work. Keep up the great work.
Great video!! My son & I watched it and found it very useful. His 8 yrs old and in a few weeks will hunt for first time. Keep the videos coming brother!
Great review/comparison. I have used the longbeard for several years but since I don't get many days to hunt, I am switching to the heavy loads to get a few extra yards past my normal 40 yrd limit. This gave me a real side by side without the investment or bruises.
Very good 👍 the best video I've seen on turkey loads. Thank you for taking the time and money to test. I usually use Winchester #5 but picked up a box of 3" #9 TSS. Illinois just drop the minimum shot size from #7.5 to any. As long as it's #4 or smaller.
Thx for doing this! Great info. I think a standard non choke barrel with these loads compared to same loads through a choke would be a cool video. Grandpas old break open vs modern mossberg shoot out...
You hit the nail on the head with 3rd Degree! I said it was good for a beginner keeping thier shots definitely under 40 yrds!! Truth it is brother! Good job!
Thanks Michael. Stay tuned I will be posting extensive results of round two only this time in 20 Ga. Longbeard Xr, Apex, and federal tss and possibly others.
Very good info and video! I shoot a Stoeger m3000, what I'm doing this year is keeping a 3rd degree Chambered and tss ghost loaded on the shell lifter. If a bird hangs up past 40 all I have to do is slowly reach up and eject the 3rd degree and the tss is ready to quietly hop in and go to work
I really appreciate this review. I just started Turkey hunting and Im using the new 3rd degree ammo. Im gonna have to try some of that other ammo. Thanks for this video.
Had to sub after watching this review! Best by far that I have watched. Have to try this in the Mossberg 930 that I have just won. Don’t know much about shotguns but this one came with 4 chokes, one is a turkey choke, and also won a Kicks High Flyer choke too!
Great video Caleb! I'm a Winchester Longbeard guy myself (3 1/2" #5's). I might get a box of 3rd degree just for the #spurtape :) Good luck this year bub!
For as long as I’ve hunted turkey, I’ve used 2 3/4” 12 gauge 4,5, or 6 shot lead pheasant loads for turkey and they’ve worked just fine. Call them within 30 yards and you don’t need tungsten, copper plated, etc. More than half the fun is calling them in close.
That's what my uncle's and grandpa taught me to use rem long range 2 3/4 1 1/4 oz 4,5,6 and have used them for years don't need a 10 dollar shell to kill a turkey
That ole mossberg is a keeper for sure. I’ve patterned a lot of shotguns and shot a lot of shotgun still target competitions and most all shotguns are like shooting a sloppy shooting rifle, most of the times you get groups that are up down right and left but that Mossberg is dead on all the time. Great job and keep the videos coming please.
Very interesting video comparison. It really makes me feel good about the Indian creek choke for my 1187 and longbeard xr ammo I just picked up. Plan on getting out and patterning it soon.
One of the best reviews. And the only critique would of made this perfect, would of been using the same target for all the loads. Damn, good job brother.
I was mostly interested in the federal tss load. I've patterned most of the others except the 3rd degree. I always like to see what someone else is shooting and the results they are getting. My son and I have killed alot of gobblers with rhe magblends until I started with a friends handloaded tss in 12& 20ga. Wicked stuff for sure. Also enjoyed your recent hunt too. Have a great season!
Ill tell you what! Winchester has it figured out with there ammo.especily turkey loads.ive been turkey hunting for over 20 years & sure seen the ammo improve over the years.ive shot a couple other brands thru the years but the past 6 years winchester is the only shell i will put in my shotgun for deer & turkey.thanks for the video.great stuff!
Federal made the flite control flex wad in their black cloud duck and goose loads too and they work great. I had a chance to try em out this past duck and goose season here in TN.
By far the best head to head comparison I’ve seen to date. If nothing else it shows there ain’t much difference from shell to shell in modern turkey ammo but the added amount of shot per shell you get by going to a tss load all the while gaining or at minimum equaling the load weight of comparable lead or heavier then lead/tungsten alloys, definitely isn’t a gimmick. Not to mention that tss really shines in the smaller gauges like 20ga and 410 bore. It now gives youth hunters, smaller women hunters and or handicapped hunters a viable option for recoil management as compared to 3” or 3.5” 12ga magnums that most hunters considered mandatory to ethically kill a long beard prior. They can now shoot smaller bore shotguns and confidently make kills out to 40 yards easily never noticing or thinking about what punishment awaits that trigger pull and where as they might otherwise become gun shy or worse, give turkey hunting/shooting firearms up completely, they now can add to our tradition and keep the sport alive and growing. I gotta ask. How do u like the tss from Federal. Is it worth it. I shoot a Benelli SBE2 and usually shoot Magnum Blend 3.5” shells. Should I try the stuff
That was OUTSTANDING With out a doubt one of the best done videos I have ever seen on RU-vid. Thank you for a extremely well done and very informative video.
One of the best turkey ammo reviews I have seen on RU-vid so far. Great job and keep up the good work. Good luck this spring! Oh and I do like me that Longbeard XR! My only criticism would be that you should have done one shot in the 5-10 yard range. It's the one range where the I think the Longbeard looses a step to loads like the 3rd Degree. Great job again.
Very impressed 👏 on your comparison. After this snow ❄ breaks here in Pennsylvania I need do same have test new shotguns groups yet. I know my mossberg 500 long barrel shoot high with #4 shot turkey and hevie-shot #6
Best patterning video I've watched. Comparing loads with different shot sizes and payloads may be a little misgiving when counting holes in paper but still a good comparison. I shoot the XR Longbeards 3" #5's. Remington 870 21" barrel with Indian Creek .665. This is one deadly combination!! Only thing I've ever liked better was Winchester Extended Range. Hated to see that go!!! Jus wondered if you have ever tried any Kent TK7 Penetrator loads??
Very good comparison video I’ve liked if you used the same target you used in the XP’s cuz they are waaaay better than those caldwell ones other than that those magnums and XP’s are bad with a capital B
I’ve patterned most of those with the same results! I’m shooting a 835, 24” barrel, sumtoy .675 choke, Williams fire sights, libsaver recoil pad shooting the longbeard 3.5” #4’ ..... its RIDICULOUS!!!!
Dude that is the best review on shot gun ammo I have seen yet but where you shot turkeys I shoot bob cats that are eating my chickens and the longest shot I have made yet is just over 40 yards with a 12 gauge with a 3 1/2" #4 though it still ran ten feet before dropping ...
Great evaluation. May I suggest a change for the next test, standardize the target if possible. The orange caldwell target doesn't exaggerate the hits the same way the black back targets do. All in all the best turkey ammo test out there.
the 3rd degree has a flight control wad and it needs a less constricting choke so it doesnt break apart under pressure at the end of the choke but im not hating still a very good review
Get a Mossberg 835/935 with a Rhino choke and Nitro heavyshot 4/5/7 or Notro TSS and it’ll blow all them patterns away! But you got some good ens there, good video too!
@@TheNaturalCalling I'm very intrested in the new federal TSS. I've taken birds out at 70 yd with the Winchester long beard XR but that number 9 shot seems like it would be very interesting
Great video but since longbeards usually shoot different than other loads you may need to re-zero for all the rounds to get the most accurate results. Again great video.
I'll be honest...my Mossberg 935 with Longbeard XR choke tube, topped off with a Weaver Kasapa Turkey plex scope and Longbeard Xr 3 1/2" no. 5's shoot and pattern at 50 yards like yours does at 20 yards. I like em tight not opened up.
Old 20 gauge single my dad bought me when I was 10, 55 years ago. Changed the butt stock to adult size. Remington 20 gauge #6 Pheasant load $6.00 a box of 25 1220 fps. 1 ounce of lead, plenty if your sighted in. Hunting for $150.00 or less. All the rest is sales and profit margin.
Have you tried the standard 20 gauge mag shok turkey? I picked some up because they were cheap and my longest shots are usually 35-40, looking for input
Good informative video. Can’t beat the LongbeardXRs for the money. Before they came out, I shot Hevi simply because no lead load could throw a pattern half as good. If a person wants to shoot lead, shoot LongbeardXRs or nothing! I test as much as I can. Base most of my comparisons at 40 yards counting hits in a 10” and 20” circle. I still shoot Hevi because the numbers are almost identical to LongbeardXR numbers in the same shot size. I’m curious if you’ve tested any out of a Mossberg 835 or 935? Some say they throw better patterns out of their overbored barrels and I’m inclined to believe it. Automatics seem to pattern better than their pump counterparts, wondering if you have seen anything to confirm or conflict. Also, have you tested any of the new Apex tungsten loads?
Awesome job, you have a fantastic combination. My question is at the different distances did you adjust your point of aim? Like at 70 yards did you hold above the turkeys head or aim at the center between the head and body???
Thank you sir. I've got more turkey ammo comparisons coming real soon. Also, anything past 40 yards (especially the 50-70yard shots) I am moving my aim point up to the turkeys eyeball and squeezing the trigger. No higher than the eye. Subcribe and share. More to come.
Ice never had an issue with federal premium nor the 3rd degree out of my benelli or V3. You already covered not to use a ported choke which after doing two tests out of two different ported.chokes with my benelli which were the tip ported truglo titan and than a linear 26 port red head I found the red head allowed the fins to open to much but did not throw the pattern like the truglo titan did. These tests were done on paper obviously. Federal has revamped the flight control ward though for this year but u fortunately only offerings are in black cloud (unfortunate for us Turkey guys) but you dont need a full or extra full Turkey choke when you run federal shells. Modified or.improved modified will get the job done perfectly due to the flight control wad. Can I guess that the wad you recovered was out of not only a ported but I would say xtra full choke?
This video is great. I say use what ammo & choke tube work best for you in a turkey hunting situation.. They all kill turkeys when used properly.. My Personal turkey hunting gun setup consist of a Remington Sp10 using Federal Mag Shok 10ga 2oz #5's with a Primo's JellyHead choke tube & it's light out devastating on turkey..
Pa Turkey Hunter I hear the browning 10 is solid after an aftermarket spring kit. I don't use the SP10 for turkey, I only bowhunt for them but the the 10 can bring the noise for geese!
PezMan I feel your pain.. I couldn't belive Remington discontinued the Sp10.. My Sp10 is deadly on Turkey's & I'm looking forward to using my new Browning Gold 10ga on geese this Sept season here in Pa.. Both shoot great..
