There are many special, 1 year only, pieces on a non turbo 301. This video goes over those differences.

These were referred to as the EC 301 from Pontiac in both 1980 and 1981 and were the std engines on Trans AM's. These used the same block as the turbo 301's along with electronic spark control (EC) but had the normal 8.1:1 pistons and a non rolled filet crank. The 1980 EC 301 was also called the W72 but lost that label for 1981. The 1980 engine was rated for 155 HP and 150 for 1981 but common Pontiac folklore says these actually made 170 due to their hotter cam and timing prompting GM to add the knock sensor due to lack of high test gas availability at the time. It's hard to believe they were using 200 Metric transmissions behind these higher output engines for the time and many I saw were converted over to 350's. Its always neat to compare all the little changes that were made from one year to the next on these long forgotten V8's

I could use that 4 bbl intake for my buddy’s 78 Gp 301 I’ve learned so much today since finding your channel earlier in the day!!

I stripped the turbo and carb from one of these in the 90's. I put it on an air cooled vw sandrail

The metric trans is used in nhra stock and super stock so it could be modified to handle some power

That is the 155/170 hp ESC W72 301 it would of had the Y code in the Vin., the standard 301 4bbl W code was 150hp , the Y code was for the 301 2bbl up until 1979 then they stopped making a 2bbl 301 .and started using the Y for the W72 301.

I thought the W72 301 was only available in 1980?

@user-bc9sz1dj1g I enjoy most Ponitac engines, including the over the counter ones like the 2.7 I4 Super duty , it gave us a hint at what the 301 could have been , the 421SD was a monster, so was the 428HO the RAII, RAIII and RAIV , the 455HO 71-72, the SD455 of 73-74, the 77-79 W72 400 , the 301 turbos just needed a little time to be developed think of them as a 3.8 turbo Buick it was not all that great until they added fuel injection and a intercooler.

@ttaperformance1046 the engine was the same in 1981 the power rating was listed as 155 hp and 235 ft lb from the factory because the 170hp rating was considered to close the the Turbo face it 30 hp over the base using a turbo Is not that impressive.

Joe, I know my 80 N/A W72 has the turbo block, but sad to hear it doesn’t have the turbo crank. Are they difficult to find? And are they really a lot stronger?
@ttaperformance1046
@ttaperformance1046 6 месяцев назад
I don't think the turbo crank is all that critical. Most of the time the crankshaft has already been ground undersized anyway from a previous rebuild.

I wonder if the intake ports are larger on the intake manifold and heads. ?

Joe, on my 81 turbo car, I'm working on removing the computer control. So far everything is fine but I've noticed I've lost 12 volts to the electric choke connecter. Do you think the computer has anything to do with the 12 v going to the choke? thanks as always, jeff
@ttaperformance1046
@ttaperformance1046 6 месяцев назад
The computer did not control the voltage to the choke. That was on the body side of the wiring. Check the choke fuse.

Joe, I have a 80 non turbo TA. I removed the pollution pump but still have the tube that connects the two cylinder heads. What do I use to plug the holes and is there anything else I need to do? Thanks. Enjoy your channel and great work on the 301 turbo engine.

@ttaperformance1046 6 месяцев назад
The holes in the front of the cylinder heads for the air tube can be plugged with a 20mm freeze plug. Dorman part number 555-101.

Can we see that engine run dyno pulls with 670 heads ? Just curious.
@ttaperformance1046
@ttaperformance1046 6 месяцев назад
Not sure what we will do with it. Need to tear it down and inspect it since it looks like there is coolant in the oil.
@CR-vu1rt

@@ttaperformance1046 I get all that. Just want to see better parts on it. I’m sure there’s a very high power potential that has yet to be reached, N/A or with forced induction.

Since you have both rotating assemblies, can they be copied digitally to make aftermarket forged cranks, rods and pistons ?
