We change over from the stock .82 A/R turbine housing with an internal wastegate and 2.5" downpipe to a 1.01 A/R housing with no wastegate and a 3" downpipe.
Where's the vacuum hoses go to on wastegate? Bunch of hoses missing on my Buddys car. Looked online for a vacuum diagram and it's confusing me. Your car sounds awesome with the cutout open. I'm falling in love with the Turbo car. I made my buddy an offer and he's thinking about it. I've been a mechanic all my life but the vacuum stuff on these cars are overwhelming. I'd love to see you do a video on the subject. This could help so many people. Especially the way you teach. I'm hooked man.
I have my 1980 TA Turbao under a car cover and will be contacting you soon to see how I can get it back on the road. oil in gas issues and I replaced the carb. engine had been rebuilt. Just need the time!
Once pressure ratio is over 1.5 your going backwards, timing will be reduced. The 3" into 2.5 is a big bottle neck, 3> 2 x 2.5" is going to see much lower PR, spool faster, take more timing, (thats where gains are) before knock. To check meassure pressure just after the turbo outlet
This is really interesting stuff, thanks for sharing all the hybrid etronic factory things. Now I'm thinking of putting a DT turbo on my 79 Regal 301....a little low end torque but that's it. Yours is a 400 w/a 3hundred rear wheel w/a draw through right!
This car is still a standard bore 301 Turbo. It is not a 400. Same 301 that is in your regal but mine has even lower compression but a thicker casting engine block.
down pipe seems close to control arm bushing. When I was buying my global west a arms for my g body they asked me if It was turbo buick powered , the reasoning being proximity of downpipe to a arm shafts, if so they mandate aluminium bushings and not urethane. Let us know if it becomes an issue...
I hate to tell you this but... it sounds perfect out of that dump! Get an electric cutout and call it good. I have this type of setup on my old squarebody and naturally aspirated it makes a huge different in low end feel. Theory is fun but real world is the final say and you already have it setup to try. Excellent with an electric cutout you can cruise quiet and have a rowdy button. Even better get a boost actuated dump valve and have quiet until it's go time automatically. edit: you found out it had too much lag I see. dang. Well an electric cutout can be opened incrementally and I wonder if a boost actuated one could be tuned to open the right ratio per boost.
for fun, when i was doing mods to my 5.3l on a 4x4 truck, i saw 2-3 RWHP from removing the mechanical fan...though that is well within the accuracy of the dyno i am sure...
More air in, more air out. More air out, less boost lag. I'm guessing you installed the new prototype steel intake manifold that matches the intake runners. Just my guess.
