Tuba Skinny - "What's the Matter with the Mill" - Royal St 4/13/2012 Erika Lewis - vocals Todd Burdick- Tuba Shaye Cohn - Cornet Barnabus Jones - Trombone Robin Rapuzzi - Washboard John Doyle - Sax Sam Doores - Bass Drum
My first reaction to this video in my recommended: "Wtf is this?" A few minutes later, I answered myself: "Possibly the best street music performance I've seen in my life."
Erika Lewis gives me the chills. It's like she's from another time. Her voice and her whole presence. The whole band is great. Glad I stumbled across this fine piece of Americana.
She looks exceptionally sexy here. No autotune or melodyne needed but I wish they would electrically amplify her voice with a battery pack. Can anyone imagine big band singers of the past trying to sing over the band without amplification.
@@georgec4585 A cornet .. but point taken. And in 2012 Shaye was only five years into playing it, and self taught ! Barnabus too, on trombone ... and Todd on tuba ..... prodigious talent and commitment !!
I know Erica has now left the band and New Orleans l have been in email contact with Robin who says that Erica will be back for tours and recording s l do hope so
That was good stuff, but I think what intrigued me was that, that it sounded... old, like the old scratchy recordings you hear but always wondered "what did it really sound like back in the days". She has a great voice and the band a great sound... I felt like I was hearing what I might of actually heard if I was walking down that street decades ago. It sounded old, but with clarity, genuine, real... like what it was meant to sound like. I guess that doesn't make any sense.
@@davidr6585 I hear ya, David: as "they" say, "Good music is timeless." It's like a Star Trek timewarp, etc. In truth, that's why I collect and listen to jazz records from the 20's-50's on shellac.
The lady who sings is physically beautiful and her voice is captivating. She is an inspiration to those of us who until we heard her pipes had nothing but baleful music. Now we have heard ecstacy that stirs our musical hearts to the hearing of more wonderful music from this band. I thank you for the wonderful sounds I have just heard.Thank you again.
Erica can tell the story! Love the expression and style she delivers. You believe what's going on. If it was the 30's she would fit right in! Thanks for sharing your talent!
No she wouldn't. Even into the 50's this music - New Orleans Style - was exclusively played by African Americans - although they weren't called that at the time. 'Whites' played Blue Grass and Dixieland a bit later.. Tuba Skinny would be unique - playing it in the 21st.
Nonsense. The Original Dixieland Jass/Jazz Band was all white, as were many other practitioners of New Orleans, "Chicago Style", and West Coast Dixieland.
There must be a hell of a lot of great street performers for people just walked by this level of talent it always amazes me that people don't stop to listen to Excellence
I know that feeling. In Vienna I once stood looking at Vermeer's Allegory of Painting for at least an hour, as people casually strolled by. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Art_of_Painting
@@JiveDadson i did not know about this incredible painting. Thank you so much for sharing link. I was able to see a few dutch masters on loan to our little museum a year or so ago, and they took my breath away - the scale, details, and symbolism made me linger.
They should play it like this all the time. This is my favorite version of this song by Tuba Skinny, it's fast, exciting and has that special prohibition era flavor that makes it truly a great performance.
After a long time I 've been enjoying the works of the tuba skinny group , and the accuracy of every one of them , I feel like they 're like my family.
I just do not understand how people can just walk by this absolutely fantastic music as if they are not even there. How can people not have enough respect to take 3 minutes out of their "busy and important lives" to stop and pay respect to such a great group of musicians. Just beyond me to show such disrespect. For god's sake people, stop, listen, tap your foot, swing your hips, have some fun !! You did come to Nawleans for this after all.
Awesome talent. Amazed at all the clueless people strolling by with No idea what it takes to master an instrument. Its a shame how the non-talents get promoted into "star" status, and these wonderful musicians barely get by.
It's amazing that so many people are so wrapped up in the daily little messes they call their lives that they can just walk by completely oblivious to this wonderful music. By the way if Shaye Cohn is not married, I am tossing my hat into the ring. At 85 years old I still have the strength to toss something as light as my hat.
Jay Francis: I thought the same thing about the crowd. It's sad really. As for Shaye Cohn I'm afraid we're going to have to get in line. A very long line, I'd guess. 😊
It done broke down...that's da matter wit da mill! God Bless America! God Bless Tuba Skinny - this is so good! I'm officially starting a house party now and Tuba Skinny is the headliner!!!
That's the time I actually started listening to this band. Right at beginning of covid. I'm from Dominican Republic and I couldn't get the song ( that's my baby now) out of my head. Everywhere I went I be singing this song, and people be looking at me in strangest forms
I'd say you can hear the vinyl in her voice but this goes back to way before then. Just add a hiss with a few pops and you'd swear you're listening to 78 shellac
I just love this band/arrangement. They are classic. Bought some of their CDs online just after seeing some vids. The singer sounds so much like Billy Holiday.
Srgbuffalo -- Erika has that smokey, funky quality to her voice that would make Ol' Satch and Bessie sit right up in their graves and shout "Yazzz, yazz, yazz !!!😃😃😃
I'm literally in Love with this band 😊 Have yet to hear a bad cut ! I'm not a schooled musician but IMHO they are all incredible musicians & performers !!! ❤❤❤
It's Christmas Eve and just come across this group by chance. So glad I did. A group of amazing entertainers. Just chilling out and listening to this group has made my Christmas Eve..
I've just discovered tuba skinny! I love it ( them) what an ensemble! Great music, talented musicians, just hits the right note ( excuse the pun) and Erica Lewis!, Wow, so raunchy! without even trying!
Timeless and enchanting. Erika is my dream girl, and the music makes my dream come true. Sounds like she's singing "What's the Matter With Bill?" I can only wish.
