As an owner of many high-end watches from the likes of Rolex, Omega…even Patek, AP, JLC, and ALS, I will attest that the Tudor BB58 blue may very well be the perfect ‘one watch’. It checks all the boxes. What more could you ask for?!?

In Nov 2021 I bought the Black Bay 58 Navy Blue on a steel bracelet to compliment a range of predominantly black-dialled watches in my collection that include the classic Rolex Submariner Date 16610 that I've cherished for 19 yrs. The Tudor is a super, very well-made luxury timepiece and I appreciate its rather understated blue dial and aluminium bezel compared to the 'bling-blue' ceramic of my Omega Seamaster 300. Like-for-like think of the Blue 58 as a more modern take on its original black and gilt sibling. The blue really pops in daylight or in well-lit rooms and a pleasure to wear. Although not quite up there with the Rolex in the absolute quality stakes - but why should it when it's barely 40% of the latest Steel Sub's retail price (if you can obtain one) - go to an AD and try one on. An in-house COSC certified movement, 70 hrs power reserve, silicon hairspring, staggering lume.... you won't be disappointed. Forget about the faux rivets - you cannot see them when wearing the watch and they add an interesting heritage-style idiosyncrasy.

Beautiful watch. I got the gilt version on the nato like strap. It is a little tank. I have to say, I run with it, scuba with it, snorkel with it, go on some long hikes with it, and now even white water rafting with it. I got mine pre-pandemic. The only time I don’t wear it is in the shower, sleep, boxing and basketball. The rest of the time it’s on wrist. Also, took it to the firing range and shot some 50 cal auto for fun and it took that like it was nothing. I have had a Rolex Explorer and plenty of Sieko’s but those things can’t survive what I do. As you said a real tool watch. Also, a real strap monster. I don’t see a strap it does not like. Enjoy and wear it as it may outlast your Batman when it gets bitty gritty. Batman is beautiful but wouldn’t take it off road.

Your taste is exactly mine! My Omega seamaster 300M Chrono was my first real watch and been about 10 years since I've own it. Getting your GS SBGE257 next! Love the green and closest thing I can get that's good looking as a Hulk/Kermit. Love the collection!

I got one at Mayor in Fort Lauderdale about a week ago and the more wear it the more I like it. I've owned the new seamster and the Rolex 114060 and 14060, yes I love no dates(they are pure) and this wears so much better. it's going to be a classic

What are your thoughts on the SMP 300 you have there vs the Tudor? I have the SMP and am wondering if I should upgrade. Just not sure if the bump up in quality will make it worth my while.
@watchandhobbies7366
@watchandhobbies7366 3 года назад
The SMP is a great watch. It’s quite different, and it’d say it’s based more on preference than to consider the BB58 an upgrade. I really really like the size of the Tudor. The SMP arguably is a more modern watch, and has a ceramic bezel with the co-axial movement, sapphire caseback with the new ones. It’s not much more expensive than the Tudor, I don’t think you can find the BB58 discounted, but probably can get the SMP at 15% discount which puts in pretty close in price. SMP is thicker and larger, at 42mm and around 13.5mm thickness. The BB58 at 39mm and 12mm is a very different size. For the Tudor BB58 - I’d really just recommend to go try it on. It may blow your socks off like it did for me after you wear/feel it on your wrist.

@@watchandhobbies7366 Thanks for the reply! Yes, I’d love to try one on, but haven’t found one in stock yet. I have one of the older SMPs with with the 1120 movement. It’s about the same thickness as the Tudor. I suspect that the 39mm case would suit me better on the Tudor though. Thanks for the video and your insight.

smp is going to look outdated and antiquated like all seamasters end up doing in 10 years time. look at the older seamasters and it's clear the design language doesn't last.

Great watch and review. Now that the hype has died somewhat, I'm hoping to be able to see on in the steel. I put myself on a wait list at my local AD. He said there were hundreds on the list. I asked, is it even worth it? He said, it couldn't hurt. So I did. Still not holding my breath. I will not pay the Flipper Tax, so maybe within the next 6 months I'll the opportunity.

Beautiful watch and great collection! I’m curious as someone who has both, how would you compare the BB58 to the SBGE257? I love the look of both, particularly the GS, but wonder if the fit of the BB58 might outweigh that for a watch I plan to wear most days.
@watchandhobbies7366
@watchandhobbies7366 3 года назад
Thanks! Both watches are so great and they both get a ton of wrist time. For everyday wear, I’d go the route of BB58 only because it’s more wearable given the thickness and diameter size for my wrist. Also the BB58 is more subtle and more of a tool watch; for everyday wear I don’t like the watch too flashy. The SBGE257 is such a nice piece with the Zaratsu polishing, and the multi-faceted faces really shine, it’s almost like shimmering diamonds on the dial. The GMT function is great, and the spring drive sweep is so smooth. Such different watches, so really depends what you’re looking for.
@benclaytor7918
@benclaytor7918 3 года назад
@@watchandhobbies7366 Thank you! I appreciate the thoughtful response. I ended up with the SBGE257 in the end, it was the spring drive, dynamic green color, and attention to detail that got me. So far I am very happy with it and agree with you it does not wear as thick as it is. Great videos by the way, look forward to the future ones!

I believe Tudor broke down the design and enginering of their In house movement that was used for the 41mm Black Bays and reduced the size - they also changed how they placed the hands on the dial and compacted them more to reduce the thickness. A lot of thought when into this redesign. Awesome watch!
@watchandhobbies7366
@watchandhobbies7366 3 года назад
Yep definitely. Tudor reduced the thickness significantly from the 41mm in house movement, so a lot of engineering work went into it!

There are so many miss aligned bezels on this model (including this one and my own) that I’m beginning to think it’s intentional. (All I need to do now is work out why)

@billt1954 3 года назад
@@watchandhobbies7366 My apologies, I watched the video again and decided that it was the camera angle that made the bezel look a little ‘Off’ to the right. Also I’m a little paranoid about such things as I had to send my own BB58 back under warranty for a miss aligned bezel and also found two other examples in my local AD suffering from the same fault. Thank you for the review, I enjoyed it.
@Saints-Forever
@Saints-Forever 2 года назад
@@billt1954 It is quite annoying for the bezel to misalign but it is also a simple fix by the AD or RSC. It you are buying from the AD and OCD like most, os better to check this out and get them to align before walking out the store.

I have a few watches that are larger - the Batman at 40mm and the SMP at 41mm. For a 7” wrist, I really do think the 39mm black bay wears incredible. If you want to go with 41mm though, Tudor definitely has a 41mm black bay with an in-house movement. Much thicker though

Black Bay 58, perfectly good nice watch, Not for me! A one watch collection? Save up and get yourself a a circa 1990/2000. Rolex Sub 16610. Sure it has a date, its the most useful complication on a watch next to to telling the time. Lastly , the pre ceramic Sub is the essence of cool, it accrues value, it the actual original thing it can be worn daily and you actually know what the date is. I have had mine for 31 years and it is currently running at +1 having had only two services over all that time , It is my everyday watch and yes, I have gone diving with this watch in each decade that I have owned it . If you don't want a date pre ceramic go for the 14060M . Tudor is a nice watch but if its going to be your only watch then carry on saving and have the real thing. I think this watch is rather like settling for a `Porsche Boxster when you actually always wanted the 911, and every time you encounter a 911 you will just say, yep, this Tudor is great but I wish I had the subby. The pre ceramic subby that is , not that blingy over the top slab sided version being sold a a tool watch when it is'n't. If I was to sell it it would be worth well over $12000. Hows that for the ultimate tool watch

So spend 4x the price for a watch that is mechanically far inferior to the Tudor all so you can have the name “Rolex” on it? Nah, not for me.

@watchandhobbies7366
@watchandhobbies7366 3 года назад
Thanks! For me, my dad always wore his watch pretty loose and it would hang over his wrist. When I started wearing watches I didn’t like it dangling around like that, but lose enough where it does slide an inch or so along the wrist.

On my wrist it simply doesn’t hold anywhere else. This has nothing to do with where you are from but everything with how your wrist is shaped. A lot of my friends have the same issue, it only fits below the wrist bone 🤷‍♂️
@Saints-Forever
@Saints-Forever 2 года назад
I guess everyone has their own preference due to their wrist bone position and where they feel most comfortable wearing the watch. However, what I personally can't understand is some people like to wear their watches too loose that hangs like a women bracelet.
