Today, Christian sits down with the Tudor Pelagos and offers up his thoughts on this sporty Tudor classic.
At Baselworld 2012, Tudor announced the Pelagos, the first watch to come from a Rolex company produced entirely in titanium. As a dive watch, the titanium case and bracelet are entirely functional, and indeed make perfect sense. It is also rated to 500 meters of water resistance, achieved in large part because of its helium escape valve, located at 9 o'clock on the case. It functions similarly to the automatic helium escape valve on the Rolex Sea-Dweller, and unlike those found on Omega's Seamasters.
There are three versions of the Pelagos currently in production - a black, a blue, and then a black with the crown on the left hand side of the case called the "Left Hand Drive" or "LHD" for short, designed for left handed people, specifically. These colors match the overall tooly aesthetic of the watches, with matte, rather than glossy or sunburst finishes. Powered now by an in-house automatic movement, the watch was launched with an ETA originally, showing that improvements are the name of the game here. And then there's the clasp, which is spring loaded to allow for a more natural expansion of the bracelet to coincide with the wearer's wrist.

My all time favourite dive watch . Bought it in 2013 one of my first higher end watches . Foolishly went on a Rolex binge around 2014 and it was sold to help fund the purchases . Along the way there have been many good watches that have come and gone and I have a pretty decent collection however the sale of the pelagos always annoyed me somewhat . Rectified this yesterday when I repurchased the black . So god damn happy . I feel it’s always been my grail without me really being aware of it , I may have more expensive and what people would refer to as iconic pieces but I feel this watch was made for me .. it’s my favourite without a doubt and it’s here to stay .,,, l

Terrific Video as always. I’ve never tried the Pelagos and as a lefty didn’t know there was a lefty edition. I’ve been eyeing the new Blue and Gold Breitling Super Ocean Heritage. Norqain also has the same color combo but I would wait till next year as Norqain is putting in the Kinessi movement in their dive line in 2021. Will need to try on the Pelagos though before any purchase.

I happened to buy a 25600TN from an auction at a phantastic price. I have to say I absolutely loved this watch. You get an in-house caliber, a titanium case, a ceramic bezel and 500 meters of water resistance for just 3k preowned. Amazing! Sadly it got sold off my store in just a month and I regret it.

Oh my goodness. Theo, I just bought a Blue Pelagous two weeks ago for almost the same reasons. I wanted a no nonsense deep diver to go with my Omega non 🌊 dial 2017 300m and my Breitling Super Ocean Heritage.42mm B20 Red gold. But for the last week I find myself reaching for the Pelagous over all my watches. It's big for a thin wrist but the titanium make it almost magically work. An added bonus is that the titanium was the metal the famous SR17 was made of so to stretch a point I get a nice air/sea vibe when I look down at it in the bright sunny day. Oh Theo you forgot to mention the lume. Caution to anyone that gets one, be careful wearing it to bed. It's like wearing a night 💡 on your wrist. When you look down at it in the dark it looks so deep you almost think you can fall into the depths.

I have the Tudor Pelagos and Black Bay, along with the Seamaster 300 and Planet Ocean on my list for my next diver watch. Thank you Christian for the review and I agree 100% that this is one of the best dive watches and dive watches shouldn’t be bling. I sold my Longines Hydroconquest because it was too heavy and I like wearing the bracelet sometimes. I think the titanium build and the spring loaded clasp are amazing features. I kinda like the LHD version wearing my watches on the left wrist and constantly have problems with crowns that are uncomfortable
@IsmaelMartinezPR

The LHD has roulette date wheel, red print, different cream color markers and they are a numbered edition. As I see it, I don't recall any other Tudor with these features, nor any Rolex. That makes for me the LHD the one to get.

The best and only Tudor I own or have had any interest in. Great watch, with great aesthetics, great movement, and lastly great bracelet. Compared to my Rolex divers, you are trading off on nothing and getting everything with this watch. Some people complained that the dial is too busy, (too much text), but that never bothered. me. Until the Smurf is obtainable in steel this is my main summer watch.

The Tudor Pelagos in Blue will be my next purchase. If not for Covid, I'd already have pulled the trigger. There is so much to LOVE about this watch. In many ways Tudor went the complete opposite direction of Rolex; they used Titanium instead of 904L steel, went with a size of 42mm & they Lumed the bezel. I really love the punchy (NY GIants) Blue of the Rolex 116619 LB Submariner, but at over $35K, the Pelagos in nearly the same Blue is so much a better choice. Christian, great review. Your vintage Rolex in the video is awesome, btw.

I've owned 3 Tudor Black Bay's and the Blue Pelagos. The Blue Pelagos is the only Tudor left in my collection. I think it's the perfect tool watch. Just a little pazza from the blue dial and all the features of a classic. Tudor didn't create this watch by so much looking back at their past models but by looking forward. There are a lot of fans of the Pelagos and for damn good reasons.

The "stretch" in the bracelet, viewers should know, does nothing for wrist comfort (which is what I thought when I bought one). The spring system is for a wetsuit, and the springs are simply too tight to expand or contract with your wrist (which would've been genius if that was how it was designed). I think this was a design mistake, being as 99.99% of owners will not wear it with a wet suit, but could have definitely used a "floating" bracelet design to maximize comfort. There also needs to be two more "notches" before you get to the spring part for more adjustability of sizing. Those issues and the slab-shape and thickness are maybe the only other drawbacks. FYI for people. The Pelagos to this day though, is the only watch I've sold and missed.

Looked at it .... seemed to me all those springs and moving parts would be a nightmare in a true salt and sand environment. Where I typically wear my watches .... but perhaps I’m wrong .
@scottc6946
@scottc6946 3 года назад
I own the Pelagos as my one and done watch. You’re right about the springs being too tight and there should have been two more notches on the clasp. But I love the thickness and feel of it. The in house movement is better than most Rolex as well. This is the next generation modern sub, that’s a tool instead of jewelry. I get compliments on it fairly regularly too.

There is a simple fix I found in another video and it works for me. Get a thin plastic shirt or collar button, slightly expand the clasp springs and drop the button between the springs; changing the resting tension. You’re not permanently changing anything, the springs are slightly on top of it and hold it in, it’s completely hidden and with some experimentation you can find the perfect sweet spot for you. I even managed to find a titanium colored button and you can remove it in seconds if desired. Good luck.

Tudor/Rolex have worked out that the general market (non watch geeks)wants 41mm wrist presence in steel sports (hence the recent Submariner upsize to 41mm). Tudor cleverly made their bronzo 43mm because the low sheen finish of bronze reduces wrist presence by approximately 2mm and matches their 41mm Black Bay steel models. The Pelagos needed to be bigger than 41mm due to its low sheen titanium finish to give it 41mm wrist presence. While 42mm is ok, I think they should have gone for 43mm. When I tried on the Pelagos at my AD, it was just a touch too small. 43mm is currently the perfect size for a low sheen titanium finish. IMO, the calls for a 39mm Pelagos are misguided. It will have a 37mm wrist presence and would be unsellable to non watch geeks. It would be a sales disaster. My request to Tudor is to give us a 43mm Pelagos.... And ideally with a no date option to balance the dial. Make it in green and I will order tomorrow! Pelagos Hulk in 43mm? Yes please!

Also when i went on chronos , i saw a used one that had the same stain. Have you heard of this happening to tudor titanium watches?? Its definitely a reason for not getting one. Out of nowhere Theo and Adrian( from B&J) reviewing the Pelagos, cool watch no doubt about that but it seems like Tudor has thousand of Pelagos wathes ready for the masses.

I have many watches. My Wife likes none of them, but she loves the Pelagos eta model which I own!! It's the only one she wears 😂

The Pelagos is a cool watch, but comes with a terrible flaw. Many owners have had problems with the lume on the bezel falling off, I don't think that's something you should expect at this price point.

Fairly certain all those issues were resolved with the in house movement version. Had mine for a year fairly rough with it and no issues so far!

@@chrischeetham2659 can't know for sure. The issue was never officially addressed. You could just be lucky like most owners.

Love the watch but unscrewing the crown works the same as an escape valve(or so professional divers say).

In house movement?? The company that supply the movement is called Kenissi (although owned by Tudor) in a separate building. They supply Breitling and other brands with this movement too. I think in-house is a bit of a play on words...

If the Pelegos was thinner, I’d have bought one years ago.

For those of you that own one , hows is the titanium holding up ? Really thing only thing I’m on the fence about . Never been a titanium guy .

I’ve had mine for over a year now and titanium holding up very well. I also heard it easily scratched, but not the case for me

@@scottc6946 seconded! Have been surprised since I've had mine at how hard it is to take scratches. Fly aerobatics with mine on in a cockpit with lots of fairly sharp metal edges, amazed despite knocks how hard it is to mark up!

I totally agree with you , the modern Rolex watches are no longer in my opinion tool watches . They are too blingy and flash . Although you can still use them as tool watches , they look to pretty to use for intended purpose . Still love them though

They should do 39mm pelagos version and lower thickness of 12mm like the bb58

The Pelagos has really grown on me over the past couple of years - I prefer the 2 line dial. I wish I had the Pelagos clasp on my BB. Why doesn't Tudor put this clasp on all their watches? Fantastic review, Thank you Christian and Anna 😊👍

Really nice tool watch that competes strongly in a tough field along side the Omega seamaster, the Breitling heritage 2 and even it's bigger but smaller brother of course the Submarines itself. Tough choices but a pre owned ulysse Nardin diver in titanium is tough to beat too. Let's not mention the Blancpain ff which bitch slaps the Rolex everyday. I can't believe how many people think a 42mm is too big. I think a sub 40 mm is for kids or women.

in the long run, I think this will prove to be a more important reference than the BB58. Give me a no-date and make it a bit smaller and woah you have a winner. Hot take!

Totally agree on the no date ... absolutely useless on a tool watch ... cut down on thickness for sure ...
