Tulkas was counted amongst the Valar of Arda and he was one of the greatest warriors in the entire history of Middle-Earth. He was known to laugh in battle and sport, even in the face of Morgoth himself, and his skill in battle terrified Morgoth who would always try to avoid facing him upon the battlefield. In today's episode we'll be exploring the history and character of this legendary warrior, Tulkas the Valorous!

Hey guys, so for the past few months I've been really busy with another project, a pc game that I've been creating with a team, and I've barely had time to dedicate to this channel. However, things seem to be going better and I've got more free time on my hands, so hopefully I'll be able to publish more frequently! As always feedback is welcome and subtitles are available!

My favorite Vala has always been Oromë, but Tulkas is certainly up there. What I find the most compelling and memorable about Tulkas is the fact that he was slow to anger, and people like that tend to be all the scarier when they *do* get mad.

I think one of the things that sets Melkor apart from other Ainur is that he is pluripotent. It seems to me that Melkor would act as the chaotic and entropic aspect of several elements of Ëa: Aule participated in the "ordely" geological formation of Earth, whereas Melkor would act as seismic-destructive activies in Arda. The Ainur, in the great music, would be a kind of "Demiurgos/Demiurges" who perfomed the so-called "Creation of Concepts" that form Ëa: Energy, matter, light, darkness, gravity, life, death, etc. Quote from the Parma Eldalamberon XVII: "These fanar they (Ainur) assumed when after their demiurgic activities they came and dwelt in Arda (the realm), that is the Earth; and they did so because of their love for the chieldren of Eru, for whon they were to prepare the world, and for a time to govern;" And: “And as is known well, the prime among these is Melkor. Measureless as were the regions of Ea, yet in the Beginning, where he could have been Master of all that was done…” Morgoth’s Ring And: "Even in his diminishment the power of Melkor is beyond our calculation. ~ the Marring of Arda, and comes of the Shadow, and of the taint of Melkor that touches all the matter (or hroa)(8) of Arda, if not indeed of all Ea." In that case "the morgoth ingredient/element" was dispersed in the universe/Eä (galaxies, planets, stars). That would explain the entropy, the cosmic indifference and the death of the universe. The entire universe is then the Morgoth's Ring. If the Morgoth's ingredient is the instrument for the decay and destruction of all matter, it means that the children of Ilúvatar who will sing the creation of a new unblemished universe/Eä will not be just those of Arda. It will be cosmic music with many "others" in many places of the Universe.

Tulkas is my third favorite of the Valar. While I like his personality and how he is always willing to oppose evil, there are two others whom I think are more interesting. First place belongs to Mandos because I just find it so cool that he is the Valar of the dead and of prophecy/dooms and is often the one who foretells future events. Second is Ulmo because he is basically Poseidon/Neptune who I have thought was cool too thanks to The Percy Jackson series.
@Count.Saruman
@Count.Saruman 2 года назад
I just had to comment because I think I found the only other person on the internet who sees Námo/Mandos as their favourite Vala. There's a tragic element to his character that some may miss- that he knows all that is to come in the future, but can say nothing nor influence it in any way unless it is by the will of Manwë (and by extension, Eru). In judging the souls of the dead in Mandos, he has to feel every moment of their pain and regrets, eventually soothing these spiritual wounds. He is not perfect, but imagine the nobility he must possess to carry on with his duties without a hint of frustration at his place in the world, and the fact that he is bound not to be able to influence it unlike his fellow Valar- as well as how diligently he cares for the souls in his halls, preparing to rehouse them in bodies eventually.

I love this! I wonder what you think about the Book of Lost Tales version of the arrival of the Valar at Utumno where they pretend to offer Tulkas as a hostage to Melkor. It's honestly one of the more uncomfortable, even disturbing scenes I've read in Tolkien, where Manwë promises to give Tulkas "to Melko's power and pleasure" (exact wording). Fortunately, Tulkas does not come to harm as, furious when Melkor insults Manwë, he escapes the chains and attacks Melkor.

@@GeekZoneMT That's always been my interpretation as well. While Tulkas was always stronger in a straight-up fight, Melkor had other tools and abilities that would allow him to subvert Tulkas' strength - not that he ever had a chance to do so, as the Valar never fought him one-on-one.

I appreciate Tulkas for how different he is to the other valar. They generally tend towards being very contemplative working "many things with thought rather than with hands", so we as readers don't get to see too, too much into who they are and what they think. But Tulkas is so straightforward and uncomplicated that you can more or less see the whole of him in his actions

Tulkas really is the antithesis of Melkor/Morgoth. He laughs at everything and rarely takes anything seriously, while Melkor goes around naming things unto himself and getting mad whenever someone disputes his claims. And Tulkas' lighthearted nature makes it all the more frightening when he does get mad, because you know things have to have gone horribly wrong for that to happen.

I am not very fond of Valar, because of their hypocracy. They are pictured as "that good guys". But they aren't much different than Melkor. They are equally prideful. They were offened when Noldor leave Valinor, they refuse to help them for entire first age (and they should, if not for the elves, than for other beings in Middle Earth). They didn't care about men, because they were in ME, where Noldor (now their enemy) were. And after Ëarendil's plee, they invite every elf expect of Avari. Etc etc etc... For this reasons I like only Ulmo, because he actually cared about ME. Melkor is also very interesting character, especially before creation of Ëa, when he wasn't evil.
@David_Fellner
@David_Fellner 2 года назад
I tend to view the Valar more as naïve than hypocritical. True, they are prideful, but more than that, they're in over their heads. They have no experience managing a world, and so they're just making it up as they go along. Their attempt at sheltering the elves in Valinor ends in disaster, and so they take the exact opposite approach afterward. When that overcorrection fails just as badly, they kind of run out of ideas and seem to just sit back scratching their heads. And I agree with you about Ulmo. He's kind of the equivalent of Gandalf in this regard; he keeps up the fight even after his colleagues have gotten distracted or given up.

My interpretation has always been that Melkor was the most powerful Vala individually, but the rest of the Valar _plus_ Tulkas were too much for him to handle. He had to find a way to divide and conquer, so he made a tactical retreat in order to reassess the situation and weigh his options.

I always enjoy these different channels talking about Tulkas defeating Morgoth because they always get it wrong.... First of all the silmarillion is very clear that the most powerful Vala was Morgoth and that he was chief.... There never is a mention in the beginning of Tulkas until later....And the Vala most like his father Eru Iluvatar was Morgoth who burned with a Hot desire to be like his Old Man hence the reason he would walk in the void looking for the imperishable flame....hence the reason he took the mastery of the music.... So in other words Melkor pissed Daddy Eru off Daddy Eru decided to shame him....this hurt Melkor because he was humiliated in front of all of the others instead of being praised for being different and having the Mastery....Eru claimed to have mastery but yet he had to stop the music because he could not stop Melkor.... So he's pissed and he shames him then this puts Melkor in a foul and rebellious mood....So when Arda opens up he descends in full power upon it and immediately starts contending with the other Vala.... Whatever power they use to build something he uses his power to uproot it and destroy...1 Vala against all others and they still couldn't beat him.... They fought for eons uncounted.... So yeah eventually Melkors power and their power is diminished because their power was finite within Arda.... Then suddenly a fresh off the bench player comes to the side of the Vala to contend with Melkor and of course he was defeated but that's only because Tulkas power was full and fresh....and Melkors was not.... Imagine fighting a tough man contest where you're dispensing all of these players and you get through 10 levels of players that also have been duking it out with you then all of a sudden they send in a very fresh off the bench fighter to fight you after you're worn out and yeah you're going to get mopped.... That's what happened here with Tulkas it's not that he was special because he wasn't it's just that he was fresh off the bench and of course if you're fighting against everyone else and whooping their ass for a long time and then all of a sudden this fresh guy comes in yeah you're going to be a little fearful and running for your life even though initially in the silmarillion all it says is that Melkor fled to the outermost part of Arda obviously until he could regain some of his power if possible... Initially it doesn't mention any fear that he had of Tulkas.... That wasn't till later.... And then later it talks about Tulkas getting tired and sleeping for a long time.... So yeah he was fresh and strong off the bench but Melkor was only weakened because he had battled for eon's untold with all the other Valar.....

"Eru claimed to have mastery but yet he had to stop the music because he could not stop Melkor." If we're going to talk about 'getting it wrong' then that statement goes straight to the top of the list. You didn't understand the Ainulindale at all, or much else, apparently.

Melkor never, at any point, "took the mastery of the music." He played it so badly that others around him couldn't focus on their own music and got thrown off the rhythm/beat, so to speak. Of those Ainur that got distracted by Melkor, some of them just kind of phoned it in and started playing whatever they heard Melkor playing, rather than trying to keep up their own music in spite of the distraction.

Tulkas seems OP! Need to nerf him to make it more exciting. He is like wonderwomen or doctor manhattan.

Tulkas comes across a bit of a buffoon to me. Strong and good, but not particularly bright or tactful.

Why be tactful when brute force is more than enough?
