Great stuff, Wim! When my clavichord arrived, the previous owner had tuned the poor instrument to A=440! Playing on the instrument at A=440 was like playing on bricks and was not only uncomfortable, but very difficult to produce any sound at all. I asked the builder and he said it should be at A=415 and she didn't like that at all. Her preferred pitch was A=410 where I kept it until everything started to collapse due to the failed gluing, I mean lack of glue, of the bridge.

Thanks a lot for sharing us with one of the most important subjects regarding music performing - the tuning. I liked the way you tuned your clavichord - by ear, by fifths - narrowing them a little bit, and by choosing Werckmeister temperaments (was it his III ?) especially for Bach's W T. I was also impressed for you given to some of the 5ths a definition of a character, how they sound. I've never seen/heard a tuner who refers to his own impression of the sound's nature of the 5ths, as he feels it. I would be happy to understand also the difference in tuning this instrument and the old piano you have. Bravo and thanks for uploading. From Riva.

One of your most interesting videos. The subjective element in tuning and the need for the keyboard player to master that relationship with his instrument is most fascinating. I can find all the multiples of the 12th root of 2 on my calculator, but that is far from mastering well-tempered tuning.

Okay, this is the least appealing topic to most 😂 But I'm a steel-string guitarrist, and I tinkered with temperaments once, so I enjoy this.

Thanks for this. How is it that you know so quickly which pin corresponds to the note?

Normally, u have coloured felt underneath the pin, "normally" on c and f, obviously u can add what ever u want, but every C would be red for instance, so u no the pin above C would be D ect ect, it's quite easy when u do it enough

@@Themozartthug My instrument has the names of the various pitches written in next to the tuning pins. I will sometimes give a string a pluck to ensure I am tuning the right one. On some instruments, such as mine, the pins triple up in the baritone section. They are still pairs, but the pairs overlap making it very difficult to follow the pins. I agree if you do this enough, you get used to it. When I my instrument was "alive" I could tune it in about 2 hours from scratch. As Wim said, the clavichord is very stable, and I could do a touch-up tuning in a few minutes. Eventually though, things being to sound a bit sour and it's time to reset everything. My instrument sadly had an unglued and very warped bridge and is currently unplayable. With the bridge only being held down by the strings, it would shift up and down causing strings to pull too high and sometimes break. I didn't know what was causing the breakage until some strings broke in the baritone section. It was only 2 notes, E and F, but that was the pressure needed to keep the lower part of the bridge down where it curved sharply. Before I had a chance to replace the strings, the bridge pulled upwards completely and shattered under the pressure of the remaining strings. When I inspected the bridge and damage, I found that there was almost no glue where the bridge was on the soundboard and on the bridge itself. The only way to repair this now is to replace the bridge and restring. I ended up removing all 122 remaining strings and now in the process of putting a replacement bridge back in as I mentioned in my comment above.

Hi. I have a single-chord Ammer clavichord (1960-1970?) which is presently tuned to A=442... What shall I do to get it back to normal? I am a dilettant player and no way a tuning tiger, but what I have in mind is to get it roughly back to A=410 or so, and then, after a couple of days, tune it properly. Another basic question is the direction of the tuning. Piano tuners say you adjust the final pitch by loosening the key. Other people say the opposit, i.e. you rech the final pitch by tightening the key. What do you recommend?

be careful going down that much, it's not very good for the strings. the instrument might be made for 442 too

Have you ever tried tuning without muting? A builder I worked for years ago would not let me use mutes when he would have me go along on service calls. He felt they were a waste of time.
