Happy to see more people doing this, back in 2016 all i got was crap talkers saying a turbo on a 4.0 is useless.. now look 1,000 plus people finally are figuring it out!
i would suggest getting a bigger intercooler up front, intake temps will sky rocket unless you are using methanol injection. most ive had was 22-23 psi 14 deg of timing. broke a ringland from intake temps climbing, being a newer i6 you have the weaker pistons so be careful. also if you dont have management HPtuners supports 96+ jtec ecu's just flash and rescale a dodge srt4 map sensor.
@@mikee2290 my kit is setup properly I’m in the 320whp-340whp range on low boost. I am on ms2 v3.0 I built myself and tuned myself. On average the people in our boosted 4.0 group are making 400whp-600whp with minor details, as with every build efficiency is your friend.
I’m 24 years old and have owned my TJ since I’m 15, I’ve always wanted to turbo it but never got around to it since I’ve been building my e36.. after seeing this I think it’s time to turbo my 4.0 🙂 would love an update video on this
I like how your intake is setup. That's much cleaner than mine. I ran the intercooler over the top like a Subaru. I might change mine to a setup similar to yours. Mines a 2.5L. Good Idea with the exhaust too. Nice setup. Looks fun.
Sounds cool I have an 04 wrangler would love to have a turbo to be honest, but wouldn’t care that much about horsepower gains would just love to hear that sound
I am just now considering a Turbo for my very very similar set up. Any worries about water intake and I mean getting that filter soaked and sucking in water
All that turbo and its even harder to hook up off pavement because he hasnt done lockers or limited slips. Turbo is cool for sure; call me old but I think gearing, axles and traction are money better spent on a Jeep. If you want forced induction the better route in a 4x4 is supercharger instead of turbo because you get instant torque with a super instead of having to spin up your engine all the time. Seems like a real good way to burn clutches and blow head gaskets.
A turbo can spool instantaneously if sized correctly. A small turbo will give instant low rpm boost, where a large will come in late and support higher revs. It depends on what you want, but I don't rev my Toyota 3F 4.0 engine higher than 3000 rpm, so I would install a Holset HX25 or HX30 from the 4BT cummins. Supercharger typically consumes half of the power it adds, so by nature it's a parasite, and much less efficient. Allows for a cleaner install though. Regardless, I'd be gapping the rings for boost before installing anything.
7 months late, but look up "Newcomer racing" (They are featured on "The Horsepower Monster" channel here on RU-vid. Newcomer Racing also has a website, but bottom line is they Specialize in AMC/Jeep 4.0 builds and R&D. He just cracked 1,000 horsepower on a turbo 4.6 stroker build this year!
Thats wild to me you dont have injectors, fuel pump, nor any tuning. When i turboed mine it wouldnt run right at all without all that i have a split se ond. And i have ran 24lbs,32lbs,36lbs, and 42lbs injectors and its favorite is 36 with 59 psi fuel pressure...but i think my cam bearings are shot since im loosing oil pressure when hot..i have an LS to throw in but cant decide to rebuild this 4.0 or go all in on a twin turbo fully built LM7
I have a 2.5 running 6psi with no tuning. It works fine. I have one way valves venting pressure away from the map sensor. Doesn't sound cool like this though. My turbo is pretty quiet.
Boost increases cylinder temperatures, which requires larger ring gaps. I keep seeing people add turbos and superchargers without tearing into the engine to change the ring gap for boost. Anyone who knows please chime in, but is there a level of PSI that is safe for stock ring gaps? Say 3-4 PSI, or should even those levels have appropriate gap?
Based on building them 🤣 the engine alone suffers at its own power rings go first 💯 only bad part about the 4.0 other than rear main seal engines built like are like a tractor what do you think is going to happen 😄 fresh build maybe 130k old build wont last 50k under constant pressure rings will go" faster💯 unless it was built for boost
