It really depends on the MAP sensor. I'm not 100% sure on the factory Jeep sensor but MAP sensors CAN read boost pressure but to a certain extent. I am running fairly low boost levels so it should be well within what the stock MAP sensor can read. I also heard that the factory mapping in the ECU is tuned rich enough to be able to compensate up to around 8-9 PSI. I took a lot of ideas from one of the Boostwerx guys when he did his turbo Cherokee build. I just simplified it compared to his.

Looks awesome! Hells yeah when the waste gate opened while camera was out the window. These engines are very easy to turbo charge since there is no air flow meter, the map sensor is easier to work with. Years back on that Spike TV 4X4 show they featured a d.i.y. electronic simple circuitry controller to work with the map sensor to enrich the fuel mixture, or lean it. It was back when people were 4.6L stroker the 4.0L and it would run lean; ditto for milder cam shafts. So these guys on the show showed how to make one, I actually wrote it down if I find it i'm going to post it here. I'm sure it would help with the fine tuning of the fuel. Faster spool, consistent combustion and exhaust temperature will sure help wake up that turbo a bit more. But its a great start.

Ah I see where you are coming from. As far as ECU is concerned I have done absolutely nothing to it :) The MAP sensor hasn't freaked out on me like it should. I still need to get a wideband installed to monitor things more closely but from all the readings I was able to pull from the stock ECU, everything seemed to be behaving like it should. I'm glad people are asking questions. Not enough turbo Jeeps out there for my liking :)

I’m new to turbos but this was easy enough to understand. I found the turbo with the waste gate on line . But what Intake did you use to mount the bov. And what exactly does the waste gate do? Just mount to the turbo and have an exit pipe ?

way cool! I want to transplant a 4.0 litre in my Dodge Spirit, do a rwd conversion and stroke the 4.0 to a 4.9 with twin Garret T3s. I have an 87' Shelby Z, Zener diode on the map, AFPR, stock injectors / fuel pump at 19 PSI. I produce 285 WHP with a stock 2.2

You have done a great service to the 4.0L world. Lots of us was to do some form of boost and you have laid out your take on it. I do want to ask, do you feel that particular turbo could be pushed a bit harder for more gains, or do you feel it was almost out of breath @ 8psi on your set-up? Also what RPM's were you pushing it to? Thanks for any more advice you may have.

@Andrew C Besides adding an adjustable fuel pressure regulator when I installed the fuel cell, absolutely nothing. The factory ecm can accommodate up to around 8 psi of boost before leaning out too much. This setup is now in a buddy's jeep and we added a MAP sensor bypass and larger injectors to richen up the mixture with higher boost.

Is this an all stock motor ? Iv really been thinking about tossing like 5 - 8 psi at my stock 4.0 in my Aj just to get it to make enough power to get out of its own way myna got 160k on the motor well kept dosnt use a drop of oil or smoke at all just lookin for alil advice

I got a 4.0 Inline 6 in my 2000 Jeep WJ & you certainly picked a good engine to build this up on!

So how's the turbo lag like from idle to power?? ...I have an 89 XJ 4.0l i6....i have after market injectors. Air filter. Throttle body. Transmission and exhaust..... I'm torn on a turbo setup or supercharger.

Hahaha thanks man. That was the one filter I found that fit and was cheap! It will be replaced next spring when I add an intercooler. :)

Your link won’t open on my phone. You literally have done nothing but bolt this turbo on and increase your fuel pressure to 52psi and that’s it? Stock tune?

How do you have the manifold set up? I read the thread but I wasn't clear on how exactly you ran the pipe from the exhaust manifold to the other side? I think i'm just confused.

My turbo set up is not the cheapest but it's done the right way. I have a t04b tractor turbo with a CB performance boost timing box, an fmu, and a few other little things. All of it added up will be about $2k

How hard was the turbo to install and also what other parts did you need to install? List all parts if possible please.

If you switched a N/A engine to forced induction, why would you still choose to put cheap gas into it? At very least run mid grade fuel! If I put any fuel in my WRX below 91 octane it will barley start on a cold morning! Your leaving so much power on the table not using premium gas not to mention eventually you will get detonation in your engine especially an engine that was never meant to be force fed to begin with!
