I got a 20 ton harbor freight press like 3 days ago, pumped that thing one fucking time and i'd had enough, i went back to harbor the very next day and got the 20 ton pneumatic bottle jack lol dude it makes life so much easier i also outfitted mine with a swag off road machined jack release knob, i ordered a roller from them and some dies and i got the knob for my press, i'm gonna get a diy finger brake kit from them next, and then the portaband table, swag off road has some awesome shit for sure, this press has some serious power though!

Only thing for bending different bends on 1 pc is you need the bottom die to be sectional as well. Otherwise you disfigure the work piece as seen in the video. Nice concept tho.

To make it even more usefull, build the bottom into sections that match the top. You wont have that little bend at the base of your cut piece. Kinda hard to explain. Anyway, trust me I work with those thing you call presses
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 6 лет назад
ya I was thinking of just stacking some shorter angle into the bottom angle which would do the same thing. This was my first attempt at using it so lots still to figure out i'm sure!
@xSpyke438x
@xSpyke438x 6 лет назад
BleepinJeep you need a space to let your straight piece move into. If it catch on something, it will bend. In the case you shown, you need a gap on the back right. Little easy reminder: if you dont have any die on the top, dont put any on to bottom. Still your setup is pretty sweat and can be modify to have remouvable bottom pieces as well.

Wish I would've seen this video before I welded mine up. I went off the instructions in another video on here and now regret it. The tubing is off centered a little which causes the angle iron piece to be off. I think I'm going to have to cut all the welds, flap disc them smooth and reweld them. Luckily I haven't welded in the piece of angle yet but I'm afraid of taking off too much metal trying to cut the welds out and be off elsewhere.

@@bleepinjeep And what? You don't find that humorous? Hmm, I thought the irony was funny, that someone is intent on saving money by buying a low end press and then be willing to spend twice as much (including the value of specialized labor) on a brake they obviously have the skill necessary to build themselves for half the price or less.

I love the idea, but hate how WIDE the bottom channel is... makes for a really sloppy bend at anything less than full depth. 1:58 case in point.. it's almost like you wrapped it around a 1 inch round pipe.
@imbrandon16
@imbrandon16 3 года назад
all you have to do is shim it with smaller angle iron like set a 2x2 inside the original body, and then set a 1x1 angle iron inside that. the big oneit comes with has a 5/8" bend radius i think, you can neck it down to i think like 3/16 if you set a piece of 1 inch angle inside of it. there are videos on how to do this.

@melgross

No, no! Don’t do what was done here with the rods! The entire point is that they are supposed to be pressed into the base plate. They are supposed to be VERY tight. Press them in half way, as the instructions say. It’s not hard. You do have a press, right? Swag says you can use a big hammer, but you really shouldn’t. I don’t even understand why they would say that. Who buys the finger press before the hydraulic press itself? Maybe as a present for someone? Pressing them in very tightly makes it much less likely that it will move when you weld. When you set the angle in, make sure the bottom of the angle isn’t preventing the edges of the angle from sitting in the channel. As they say, if that happens, then grind away a bit of the corner of the angle until it sits flat, but not so much that it doesn’t touch the bottom. I machined it on my mill. When welding the collar, you first need to install this on the press to make sure it’s exactly where it belongs. If you can then spot it when on the press, that will make sure it’s in the right place. It’s really pretty exact. If it’s off by 1/16” the RAM may hit the collar. You don’t want that. The tabs at the ends should be against the press uprights. Use clamps Sorry for this long dialog, but I’ve built several of these, and have seen the problems others have had by not doing it correctly.
@jjgag601
@jjgag601 4 года назад
Mel: What do you mean by this, can you explain it a little more."When you set the angle in, make sure the bottom of the angle isn’t preventing the edges of the angle from sitting in the channel. As they say, if that happens, then grind away a bit of the corner of the angle until it sits flat, but not so much that it doesn’t touch the bottom. I machined it on my mill". Do you mean when I place the angled part into the channel, it will sometimes sit too high above the top of the channel so you need to mill, sand, grind the angle piece so it fits lower in the channel. Do i understand it correctly. Also thanks for explaining about press the uprights in, I like that idea. How big of a welder do you need.
@melgross
@melgross 4 года назад
JJ Smith yes. That’s exactly what I’m saying. Sometimes, when you put the angle in the channel, and the bottom of the angle hits the bottom, the top edges of the angle aren’t touching the top of the channel, and it wiggles back and forth. They say to grind a small amount off the point of the angle until it fits so that the new flat of the point just touches the bottom of the channel while the top edges touch the top edge of the channel. That way, it sits snugly. I started to grind it using an angle drinker, but it’s not even, and it needed to take off too much, so I put it in the mill. Doing that also ensured that the flat i milled would be exactly parallel with the top of the angle. If you don’t have a mill, then you have to grind it off carefully. But whatever you do, the angle must sit perfectly with its sides at 45 degrees. It sounds harder than it is. I used my ESAB emp 205, which is about 235 amps max for MiG, which is how i welded it. But I didn’t weld at that amperage. I think I used about 125 to 140.
