Turning BUGS into FAIRY KNIGHTS 🦋🗡 (CHARACTER DESIGN CHALLENGE)

As a leatherworker that has been obsessed with making armor based on bugs..... I want to make these! I can't sew or draw, but if some one wants to make the cloth portions I'll make the armor!!! Personally my favorite was actually the beetle. It just sang to me on something I'd be really excited to make. Your stuff is always so badass!

You need to do sea slugs next!! No, no, heat me out- look up “pretty sea slugs” and it’s a gold mine.

I can absolutely see a rivals to friends to lovers dynamic between Monarch and Mantis where it's like, snarky flirting and backhanded compliments from Mantis that slowly evolve into playful flirting and genine compliments and it's all fine and dandy until Monarch starts flirting back and it just evolves into "oh crap, I've actually fallen in love with her." Anyways, love the video as always. You're a huge inspiration to my art and I love your stuff!

French fact: In French, we call dragonflies "libellules" which is a very soft and cute name, and little dragonflies are called "demoiselles" which mean miss in a very polite way, so, for me, this bugs are cute, soft and dreamy, with a Luna lovegood vibe💙

They're rarely included in designs to make room for characters' faces, but including the extra headshots for the helmets was a fantastic idea. They all look terrific and help round out the full looks.

The helmets you designed for them look so good ! I can totally picture them in a delicate miniature world, a bit like the movie Epic.

The intro is truly amazing, I never knew that I needed to see a knight praying mantis. ✨Gorgeous✨

I would image this as a story where they are all kinda just thrust together into a group. Maybe monarch and dragonfly know each other already through mentoring but really don’t get along. I could see beetle helping monarch be softer on dragonfly and help show her that dragonfly has her own strengths. As for orchid I would imagine she is the one who plays it straight amongst the bickering but grows fond of everyone overtime.

Dragonfly needs to have a Mosquito Villain/Rival that also uses a rapier with like a blood jewel kinda vibe! Very cool designs!

I know you weren't impressed with the last character design, but honestly I think it was my fav which I was definitely not expecting!!! Beetle is beautiful, and I absolutely love the coloration on her armor- you were worried about it being too much but honestly, the gradients are amazing!!

The Orchid Mantis and Monarch feel like they would be in relationship. Likkkkeeee they look like they would balance each other well and fight really well with each other. Synched up really well and just be in love haha

I love dragonflies they so adorbs to me and a pretty well-known fact is orchid praying mantis (the one on this video) look like that to disguise themselves as flowers to capture their prey easier

Monarch reminds me of those characters in tv shows that are stoic but caring leader in plot relevant episodes and absolute goofball in filler episodes

The butterfly design is absolutely gorgeous

The first thing that came to my mind when seeing the similar hair was that maybe its a symbol of rank. Maybe they have already been knighted, they have reached the end of their training. As that, maybe Monarch is there training the newbie Dragonfly, and Mantis is there to check to see if Beetle is ready to be promoted to an official knight. Either way, now I wanna draw bug knights as well, but have no time to do so. Maybe one day...

Just yesterday I found this random bag with a little Worry Worm I named Grubriel (It's a play on "Gabriel) all on it's own & decided to keep him. And now after watching this video I can totally see Grubriel being a court jester of your round table of fairy knights. Amazing job as always, I loved all of them. Also, if you ever make a sequel to this video, may I suggest a bee-themed knight with a big honking lance?

Thank you for these bug gals, I love them! Especially Monarch's outfit and armor it came out so beautiful. Mantises are my fav insect though, so I did want to try and explore her character. I did a little research into orchid mantis and it seems they eat a lot of butterflies (they do hang out on flowers) so I could see Mantis and Monarch having the most antagonistic relationship to start out with, before slowly realizing they have more in common than they would like to admit. Maybe super sweet Mantis has a darker side in getting rid of perceived threats to those she loves in pretty underhanded and sometimes cruel ways. Monarch tries to stop her, but she can't win a straight up fight. So she changes strategy and outmaneuvers her with nonlethal traps that have a silly, prank twist. She tries to get Mantis to see the benefits of restraint instead of going cut-throat all the time. In turn, Mantis later has to convince Monarch that sometimes threats can only be dealt with by drastic measures. Mantises are all about waiting for the right moment to strike and finishing a fight quickly, and that could translate really well to that iconic single unsheathe-and-strike motion with the katana.

17:08 its ok because they're like, rivals turned best friends _(haha "best friends" haha "roomates")_ and get their hair done together every other night, already headcanoned.

So here’s how I think the story would go, So dragon fly is the youngest and maybe she was found by monarch at a young age and was trained to be a knight. Maybe they are both knights for some butterfly royalty. So I feel like mantis would be from a different kingdom or something and she would be a like an escort for their representatives. Maybe she saves them from like a monster and they befriend each other later. Later on they meet beetle on a mission in a foreign nation. And like if they had a show or something it would be centered around dragonfly and like how she grows as a knight and makes connections

The designs are absolutely gorgeous ! My headcanons are that Monarch kind of adopted Dragonfly and became her mentor after finding her on a quest that she was underqualified for but too confident to refuse. They meet Beetle later on and she and Monarch get on like a house on fire after the initial wariness. She also becomes a sort of Cool Aunt figure for Dragonfly. They meet Orchid last. She and Monarch end up having a long (read: very painful for Beetle and Dragonfly) enemies to lovers arc. They then proceed to become the Power Couple™ ever. Dragonfly treats her like her new step-mom on probation and Beetle, being a boisterous extravert, tries to get her to liven up a bit.

For Monarch and Orchid, I think it would be cool if they went to the same very eccentric OR very sophisticated hairstylist fairy

To continue the designs from food, you could; randomly generate 1 food item, Then generate a random dnd class- u could also instead do an aesthetic to combine it with lol. I’ve been trying it out and have gotten such wonderful concepts as- a baked bean barbarian, a borscht Paladin, a licorice allsort warlock, ect

Ok here me out Monarch and Mantis grew up together and learned how to fight side by side. Eventually they fell in love but then had a falling out that caused them to become enemies and now Beetle and Dragonfly are their protégés

I do have a suggestion for praying mantis, more precisely for her shoes. I feel like since she has a katana she could have some traditional japanese sandals soles (like that of an oiran). And since her battling style is very swift movements maybe she could do something akin to kabuki idk just an idea. Keep going with the fantasy nonsense please I'm eating it up :)

i ship orchid and monarch, so. much. They have the same hair, opposite colors, complimentary personalities.... PERFECT! omg orchid, monarch, and beetle can all be adopted moms for dragonfly...

I’ve had a bug based species in the back of my brain for a story I’m slowly working on, and I feel like tethering them to an aesthetic from the get go instead of just a bug ginjinka is going to be very helpful for my creative process, so thank you

If you still aren't happy with the beetle lady's design I suggest maybe sticking with only warm colors instead of trying to mix red and green (No clue if there is a beetle like this). Mixing warm and cold colors can add a lot of cool detail but I also think just having the beetle lady be just a buff like Sun personality type knight would also be cool for a more story route. Like maybe she's known for being hot tempered and quick to start a fight because of her pride in her battle skills and Sun personality thing. Love all the designs though, now I kind of want to try something like this and love all your videos!!

I love your designs every single time. Like honestly I am super drawn to non wearable clothes in a character design more than something practical. I know this is super off topic but about how long do these designs take you to actually draw? As a glacially slow artist I love to know how fast other people are knocking out their designs.

HC: her weapon's different wing color is because she took them from another butterfly. Something something dystopian animal kingdom rite of passage thing. Also, an interesting tidbit is that every fourth monarch generation, there's a 'super generation' that lives 8-10 times longer to complete their migration.

first i just want to say that omg your art is amazing and gives me a lot of inspiration! :D (which probably isn’t actually a good think bc i need to get as much schoolwork as possible done in the next three days) i love all of your designs n their aesthetics like,,, :) anyway expanding on some group dynamics: i think dragonfly n monarch have this kinda b99 jake peralta/captain holt thing going on. idk its been a while since i’ve interacted w b99 at all but specifically the audios of like,, peralta accidentally calling holt dad and the one where theyre acting how they think holt would respond the first time he ate a marshmellow. mantis and monarch are married (obviously) n they have quite the strangers to friends w benefits to exes to enemies to enemies and lovers to friends?? to lovers thing going on. yes im fully prepared to make animatics and write fanfiction abt these to. beetle is the aunt of the group. which is obvious but yknow. establishing. ofc dragonfly is the niece, mantis is her sister (i imagine mantis starting the most petty siblings squabbles w her, despite how cold n calculating she usually is with everyone else), n monarch as her sister in law (beetle will joke abt how she has her eye on monarch and *if she breaks mantis’ heart* n abt her approval n stuff bc she thinks its funny [monarch is mildly terrified], but she loves planning n setting up pranks w monarch n was their wingman) also mantis is very ‘im gonna fuck your mom’ to dragonfly. esp in the kind of ‘a 13 year old boy tried to fight me today’ and ‘im gonna start dating you mom *even harder*’ type of way, yknow? yknow. lore hc: theres some sort of fairy war between the flying and unable to fly bugs. the flying bugs have a more sophisticated regal cottagecore aesthetic while the non-flying are more vampiric goblincore. the gang are part of a 3rd faction that wants unity and peace among all bugs and takes in fairies in need from both sides. monarch was the daughter of a minor noble n at the time used that abused that privilege to get out of trouble for pranks and such. she met mantis, the daughter of a well-off merchant, while she was setting up a business deal with her father. they were on-and-off for a while, but ended up breaking up for good after a small fight spiraled to mantis’ negotiations falling through with monarch’s dad. monarch thought that mantis was overly temperamental, while mantis found her to be too immature and petty. they didnt see each other again until the war started. dragonfly and monarch didnt really know each other before the war, but they were aware of each other’s existence. dragonfly was a page, and recognized as a prodigy in their local area. her family was very poor and she had a lot of pressure to preform well and bring in money to support her parents. the special treatment she got from her parents whenever she was doing especially well fueled her ego, but the way they treated her when she *didnt* makes her feel defenseless and attacked whenever criticized, and makes her feel that she has to prove herself and handle everything on her own to be useful. beetle was a commoner, but still above average in wealth, coming from a large family of artisans and merchants. beetles family lived was from both kingdoms, meaning she had many non-flier relatives, which she often felt more connected to because she and her parents werent good fliers, she and her father barely able to fly at all. after mantis left monarch’s area she headed over to where beetle is in hopes of making connections with beetles’ uncle bc she didnt want to go back to her mother empty-handed. mantis n beetle pre-war never got to the sibling level but they were friends and def gossiped (family drama, local shenaniganery, mantis’ ex, etc). the business deal between mantis n beetle’s family was made, however, and she eventually returned back to the non-flying kingdom (they became pen pals). then the war happened, separating beetle from her a lot of her family and friends, forcing new responsibilities onto monarch and mantis, and putting dragonfly into battle. not rlly sure exactly how they all managed to join the 3rd faction n meet after the war but some general stuff (yes im not done): beetle was likely the first to join. she snuck over to the non-flier kingdom to meet with her family s and mantis after several months of not being able to communicate. she lived with mantis for a bit before they both got arrested. the faction n some of beetle’s family came together to break them out n provided them a place to stay. at some point, monarch and mantis crossed paths again during some sort of political business. while they still couldnt really get along, their personalities were a lot closer to what they are at present, which quickly resulted in their enemies AND lovers phase. presumably monarch either joined after she heard abt what happened to mantis or mantis was already in it and convinced her to join. either way, sometime after they had all joined n became a team, they all started doing work on the battlefield, where monarch n dragonfly saw n recognized each other. monarch, now much more mature n aware of the world, felt bad for what dragonfly’s life mustve been like and was appalled that a child was fighting. somehow they got dragonfly to join. n then they all got therapy n lived happily ever after ..i have more misc hcs: -mantis and monarch do each other’s hair -monarch insists that dragonfly is too young to fight, even though shes an adult now. theyve changed into a recruitment team -im not entirely sure what happened when beetle met monarch, but it was quite dramatic -please bully me into writing an actual fanfic abt them omg ive been doing this for hours i haven’t actually done any work today -i noticed that momarch n mantis are both specific species dragonfly and beetle are not, which could probably b somehow linked to their difference in class and wealth. ok im done (for now) thank you sm for staying this long :) take care of urself m have the best day u can! ^^

I feel like they're apart of a council of Bug Knights, where each region has a champion to defend their homes, and these four happen to sit on the same council representing their clans. Maybe the bug Knights are all recruited to figut against a common enemy (Mushroom/Fungi?) That wants domination. I'm envisioning essentially teen titans meets sky dancers in a fantastical knight bug fairy light.

I think it'd be really neat to make a Damselfly character(like a princess type) to go with the Dragonfly knight.

The orchid mantis helmet's silhouette is amazing work though - it combines the classic jousting helmet with the women's heart-shaped hennin hat/hairstyle of that high mediaeval period! Amazing, fresh, fashionable, etc etc etc

Maybe when they were younger and more impulsive, Monarch did a really emberassing prank to Orchid / her clan and kind of made them seem weaker/pathetic to the other clans, and I feel like Orchid is very loyal. You mentioned she has a cold temper, so she'd take offense. Orchid wouldn't actively hunt out Monarch, but with every chance she'd get, she'd make her life harder. They'd have a lot of fights like that, but a slight simmer of something else would creep into the fights and they'd have to leave before they could adress it. Orchid Mantis' are very indepentent so she'd have a hard time accepting help, but her and Monarch (who is knows Dragonfly but hasn't really talked to her) come together to fight a common enemy to the land. They also have high rates of cannibilism and eat butterflies so maybe after getting to know her, she's worried she'll kill Monarch? Dragonfly could be stranded from her clan and try to steal from Orchid to idk get food or smth, and Monarch would recognize her. Monarch would then start mentoring Dragonfly. Meanwhile, Dragonfly and Orchid could bond over their harsh upbringing and after a while, Orchid could start mentoring her as well. I'm not sure when Beetle would come in. Monarch and Orchid do eachothers hair to match b/c they're dating!!!

Orchid Mantis’ appearance actually mimics orchids as an ‘aggressive mimic’ !! They use it to like lure pollinators to them to eat them, they’re statistically rlly successful with it as well ! :DD It’s so cool /pos (Take all of this with a lil salt tho- i’ve only done a lil bit of research on them when making an oc :D/lh)

Name ideas Dragonfly: Iris (Greek goddess of the rainbow), Libelle (German girl’s name meaning dragonfly), Achira (Sanskrit girl’s name meaning very swift), Laguna (Italian girl’s name meaning pond or lake) Butterfly: Reina/Regina (Spanish and Latin girl’s names respectively both meaning queen, y’know monarch), mariposa (Spanish word for butterfly, I always associate monarch butterflies specifically with Mexico due to the fact that they migrate to Mexico each year/those gorgeous photos of trees covered in thousands of monarch butterflies), oriane (French girl’s name meaning Dawn) Mantis: Orchid/Katana (for obvious reasons), Ran (Japanese word for Orchid), Gulizar (Turkish girl name meaning rosy-cheeked), Eulalie (French girl’s name meaning sweetly-speaking Beetle: Jewel/Julia (the other name for the scarab beetle is jewel beetle/Julia sounds like jewel), Alexandria (Greek girls name meaning defender), Bellona (Roman goddess of war), Maeve (Irish warrior queen), Hildegard (Scandinavian girl’s name meaning battle/name of a Valkyrie)

Believe it or not, I actually love the beetle design probably the most. I would love love love to make the beetle axe! I think it's the best weapon design of them. If I had the money to be cosplaying right now, I would 100% cosplay her (tall buff redheads are my jam). I think making the iridescent armor in those colors would be sooooo much fun. And I actually really love her helmet (I actually like all the helmets) and the little curvy boot tips are so charming! I love the idea of Beetle being the most outwardly confident and rowdy but also having a lot of insecurities. She's definitely the big sister of the group and probably spends a lot of energy making sure other people are happy before herself (Am I projecting onto this character because she looks like my archetype??? WHO CAN SAY). She's always wearing armor "just in case" (but really because it's a physical manifestation of the armor she puts up to mask her insecurities). I think the name Beatrix would be perfect for her. I love the silhouette for Orchid. I think everything translated really well, I could tell immediately that the hairstyle mimicked the mantis's head. Her fighting style makes a lot of sense too, because mantises are ambush predators. I think she would have a stealth version of her armor because she would be the best at stealth and probably Dragonfly's mentor for that. I loooooove the complimentary color palette on Monarch, that was suuuuch a good decision. I think it'd be interesting if she were like the step-daughter of the Queen of the insect fairies, and is technically next in line for the throne because the Queen didn't have any children, but the royal court doesn't accept Monarch as the next Queen. A Monarch who is not a monarch, if you will. Irony :'D I don't know why but I find Dragonfly's hair makes sense and reads "dragonfly as human" to me. I love the color rendering on this design.

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH OMIGOSH!!! You did my 2 favorite buggos!!! (Orchid mantis and Monarch Butterfly!) always loved them since I was little. I've always imagined the monarch butterfly as a forest queen and the mantis as a ninja but these designs are still awesome regardless of 6-year-old me's headcannons lol. Might I make a suggestion for the dragonfly girl's name? : Pearce. I was inspired by an OLD myth I read in the Charlie Brown Encyclopedia (Yes that's a real book) but the myth is that dragonflies are "sewer bugs" that stitch your lips together so you starve to death. In folklore, they are also basically husband judges meant to determine the good and evil within men and will punish them if they are unfitting to their wives. So yeah basically a double joke/pun here: Sharp personality and cuts off those who have nothing good to say or talk over people when she gets too excited or upset. I just love the idea that Pearce is a firey gal who is not interested AT ALL in marrying or starting a family. Any time her friends get a boyfriend, she would threaten them that she would slowly and painfully torture them if they ever hurt her buddies. Perhaps maybe one day I feel she could find one of 2 different boios to spend her life with. EIther someone slow and struggling on the field who is absolutely smitten with her and she has to save ALL the time, at first it pisses her off, but after a while she realizes... he was saving her too... making her feel truly needed. OR a tough boi that goes out of his WAY to 'bug her' lol but after going on long enough of an adventure together she realizes "Oh shet he was flirting with me the whole time... ////AAAAAAAAAA-///// (sorry for the long list of ideas and not being here the day of the upload I just got in a car wreck and am in the middle of finals :,)

you should try making different kind of nebulas into characters! I love your artwork, so I'm 100% sure it'll turn out really pretty.

Leather armor actually can be rooted in history! For example, there are extant pieces of roman armor made from leather! Its cheaper than metal and was for the more expendable troops! Studded leather is the non-historical armor style :D

OK OK LISTEN, LISTEN, MANTIS AND MONARCH TOGETHER?! They would be such a power couple. They would definitely be enemies at first and then slowly start to gain feelings for each other. I feel that monarch would be super flirty and orchid would always be beat red when they flirted. I could see beetle being a wingman for them and always trying to get them together. I think that at first dragonfly would be super shy but then get a little over confident but learn that it’s rude and become just like Monarch (super flirty towards people she likes) I agree I think beetle would be an alcoholic (probably a beer type) but would be super goofy and nice. I feel that she seems really scary at first but really isn’t. I can honestly hear her laugh and it would be really deep and loud. Monarch: Flirty, leader, strong Mantis: Shy, kind, tempered

Yo I loved all of these! And seeing the helmets and weapons really fleshes them out! ❤ I like the idea of them being in different factions of the same wooded area and slowly becoming team mates. Like monarch and dragonfly meet but in a different instance monarch and bettle meet. A web of alliances/relationships if you will lol. And before long they realize they’ve know about each other without actually meeting! And as a fellow southerner I salute your dedication to big catching/releasing lol.
