I like how they made her appearance almost "villain-like" which makes you feel like she'll be an antagonist. But they didn't go with that direction at all, and she shows that she actually cares much for Ming and her family.

She does put her daughters and others down I believe? Even in this collection she pecks at the aunts, and she actively disaproved of Ming and Jin's relationship to the point of triggering Ming's first panda transformation. It's heavily implied Ming's treatment of Mei is a reproduction of her own childhood with her mother. That's not to say she's awful or doesn't love her daughter. We see at the end she cares and even seems to realise the impact of her own parenting on her daughter, even if she's not as open at acknowledging it.

I interpreted the scene as Wu being like Mei when she was younger, but was successfully pressured/shamed into giving it up. Many women grow up being told that they’re too emotional, and are often told to keep that part of themselves hidden. You can see this external shame reflected in how women who have lost their composure in the public eye were treated (ex. Britney Spears). Its also something touched upon in Bojack Horseman, when Honey Sugarman is lobotomized for acting out from her trauma. It’s important to keep Wu’s age in mind. Across any culture, strictness about tradition truly gets tighter and tighter as you go up the generational ladder. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was shamed terribly for expressing herself and enjoying the panda. And who knows, maybe she tried to be better for Ming, but ultimately didn’t have the emotional resources to do so.
@gabrielelliott2803
@gabrielelliott2803 2 года назад
@@kingskeltal5228 I agree with you, because maybe there was a long line of trauma passed down from each mother, expecting their child to be perfect and to seal their panda inside of the keepsake. And when it was Meilin's generation she finally broke the cycle because she remembered all the good memories with her friends being in her panda form and she decided to keep it. Her mother was like Meilin but a bit more shy. She wanted to keep her mother proud and wanting to impress her, and when her grandmother asked her how this happened she couldn't hold in her anger anymore. She got mad at Meilin because she wasn't able to be like her. So I feel bad for Ming. I'm so glad that they had a happy ending :)

You know it’s interesting that people call Mei’s grandma a Material Girl considering the possibility that she probably got her panda during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. You know, that time when anything Capitalist, Imperialist or just Non-Mao was to be eliminated. Just saying there's a lot of implications if we look deep enough.
@misscandy2873
@misscandy2873 2 года назад
This is actually an interesting theory! Judging from the family’s mother language - Cantonese, we can know that they’re either from Guangdong (which is a province of China) or Hong Kong, and there’s a high chance of being from Guangdong according to the cultural features depicted in the movie. Since Mei’s mom is probably in her 30s in this movie set in 2003, which means she were born around the 70s, which is when the Cultural Revolution was starting to end. As there used to be these feudal and patriarchal traditions in the Chinese society where woman must marry and give bzirth in a very young age (can be as young as 15,16), it’s actually possible that Grandma Wu gave birth to Ming not long after having her teenage years. (Maybe her panda transformation happened around the mid 60s?) Unfortunately, that was exactly the time when the Chinese Cultural Revolution happened, it was infamous and was called a “Ten year purge”. China was like a hell in these years : the Great Chinese Famine, the homicide of Intellectuals and Rich people, millions of students and child shaming and taking the lives of their own teachers, sometimes even parents. All of these cruel, gruesome and disgusting behaviours were all initiated, even normalised in the name of preserving the new idealism by purging the China traditions. So yeah, Mei’s grandma had to endure in a living hell when adapting to her new-found panda power, which is really impressive. No wonder why she moved to Canada. Thank you for giving everyone a new look into this movie, it’s insightful :) Sorry if this comment seemed too long, I’ve been learning materials related to the Chinese Cultural Revolution and I wanted to share what I know here!
@edoboleyn
@edoboleyn 2 года назад
Someone who actually knows about China’s history under the Communist Party? I’m impressed, Juan. ✨🤩 That’s a pretty amazing concept, the idea that Mei’s grandmother got her panda during some of the worst years of Communist rule - but couldn’t use that power to protect her family. Given that the Chinese Communist Party was also determined to eradicate Chinese culture, Sunyi and her story would be enough to get you and your family killed in the worst way. The CCP was bent on destroying every element of traditional Chinese culture, too, right down to the family itself. That’s why Mao turned children against their parents. Preteens Mei’s age reported their parents for any “evil” opinions or even owning something “Western” like an old bottle of perfume in the attic, and often participated in the humiliation, torture, and execution of their own mothers and fathers. Whole families were sent to camps to do slave labor on starvation rations, and many never returned. And that was a few years _after_ Communists created the “Great Leap Forward” famine and caused the deaths of more than 40 million people. Which was also after the Communists murdered “capitalists” when they took power. (To say nothing of their own imperialist conquests and colonization of Tibetans, Uyghurs… You get the idea.) In other words, there’s a lot of real generational trauma, healing, and family themes to explore if Disney wants to represent Chinese and Diaspora families. Even for a PG audience, the way “Encanto” represented Colombia’s civil war. Unfortunately, as long as Disney remains desperate for a Chinese market, there won’t be so much as a whisper of those truths from them.
