I decided to look back on Disney's 2003 remake of Freak Friday, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Turns out I was shocked but not surprised by the harmful asian stereotypes and uncomfortable age gaps were mixed in with a level of directing that otherwise holds up pretty well. The fact that the mom in this movie is a professional therapist makes her abusive behavior towards her daughter even scarier. Like she's using her knowledge of psychology to purposefully break down Anna's self esteem. It's kinda hard to watch.

Only realistic thing in this movie is how insensitive parents are to their teenagers problems. They always play it off as the teen being dramatic and they couldn’t possibly have any real problems.

Facts! My mom still to this day refuses to accept that I was actually struggling with clinical depression from 8 onwards. Even now with my own son she always manages to make my child self a bad person when I was struggling mentally and they refused to help me. I was diagnosed with clinical depression at 10 years old but it wasn't until I was 16 and my principal ripped her a new one that she finally got me help. But somehow it was all my fault and she's the poor perfect parent that "did everything". While I love my mom, I have so much resentment towards her and the fact that she refuses to acknowledge the harm and damage she caused by telling me time and time again that all I do is lie, I just want attention, etc. when all I wanted was help.

@@SteviiLove omg it’s like you’re retelling my own life and I’m so sorry you had to go through this! This is literally my story too. I love my mother as well but a part of me always wishes that she would just admit she was wrong during that time and not make it out to be that I was this impossible bad kid and admit the depression and anxiety that I struggled with and still do. I suffered severe depression from what seems like since I was born. I would just have these violent nightmares and was so anxious I didn’t wanna go to school cause the relentless bullying was only making it worse but she would never admit I was bullied she would just say I was taking the other kids too seriously and needed to relax and when asked what was wrong with me she would just say it was “me being spoiled” cause how could a little kid possibly have any problems and even as it progresses through my childhood and adolescence she still would just play it off as me “seeking attention”. It wasn’t til my first suicide attempt that they began to find a therapist and even then she would tell the doctor herself to not “take me too seriously”. I literally live by myself now and I’m married with a kid on the way and when I speak of how I’m still depressed she’ll be like “omg are you still on with that?” Like how could I possibly still be doing it for attention when she isn’t even here?!? Thank you for this comment and sharing your story with me it’s eye opening to see how many children struggle with the same and can’t get any help with their mental health . Many blessings to you 🙏

@@SteviiLove Honestly if your mom still refuses to acknowledge that she has traumatized you, I would personally suggest cutting ties with her. I've been through similar situation, the only reason why I love my parents now and we have a good relationship, is because they acknowledged, apologized and changed their behavior. When I was young, I had so much hatred towards them, that I never thought a good relationship was pusibel, I just didn't want it. Fast forward to now being an adult, I can confidently say, I love both of my parents so much, and have forgiven for thier abuse, because they proved to me that they became better, and that I could trust them now. I'm grateful to them for that. I just personally think that it's mentally and emotionally unhealthy to be in contact with your abuser who still refuses to acknowledge that they where and are still abusive. I wish you luck ❤

My mom was abusively strict and devout religious woman so she made me and my older sisters lives a living hell until one of her church friends told her to go easier on us bc teens have problems and stress out just like adults do and if you punish them for opening up to you they’ll become resentful

I think maybe Tess is under the false perception that her son was still young and innocent. He did a lot of mean things to his sister knowing his mother wasn't looking. Anna isn't easy to deal with and she's in the rebellious stage every parent dreads. She does eventually find out her daughter wasn't as awful as she thought and maybe get son instigates sometimes.

@@ninjasylph yeah, that happens to me a lot, my mom thinks my young brother is doing just kids stuff, but sometimes she doesn’t realizes or sees when he crosses the line between being a kid and being disrespectful until is way to obvious. He’s a good person, but sometimes my mom lets him get away with more things than he should.

At least this movie had a kind of appropriate response to the teacher being like "your mom friend-zoned me back in school, and I shall respond by torturing you every single day." You know, addressing that the attitude is inappropriate and unprofessional and means they should not be in charge of children, not "tragically romantic." Looking at you, Harry Potter.

This movie always tried so hard to make it seem like both of them were waaaay out of line, but no, Tess was just an abusive horrible mom that strikes me as the kind of person who would take their kid to court for grandparents' rights after the kid cut all contact to escape the overbearing abuse. I'm surprised Ana was doing as well as she was, all things considered. But then, this kind of treatment of teenagers was considered 'normal' and 'appropriate' back then and not seen as the horrorshow that it is. It was so traumatizing and the adults who did these kinds of things still don't understand why what they did was wrong.

there's something especially cruel about comparing the minor rudeness of a maturing teen and the knowing malevolence of an adult in power. it's just wild. the fact that tess ended up behaving more immaturely than anna with jake was just so unintentionally real, because i learned to be very self possessed and emotionally restrained from a very young age to "handle" my moms volatility. she didn't feel the need to restrain herself or choose her words tactfully so it was up to me to be levelheaded.

Yeah, it’s sort of giving Ladybird and her mom, everyone gives Ladybird shit for “being a bad kid” and “being selfish” for wanting to go to a good college, whenever I see someone say that a movie, show, or book, has a character with a “complicated” relationship with their mother I always think “just say that the mother is a bad person and everyone gives too much shit on her daughter”

I’ve always thought taking a person’s bedroom door of the hinges is such a terrible kind of punishment for a child. Like unless you have some extreme history that would cause a serious level of distrust and worry for your well being all you’re doing is taking away a common decency of privacy that everyone deserves. And even in extreme cases the always unlocked and open after two knocks could be a better way to go at least at first.

I completely agree. privacy is a right and in most cases there isn’t any justification in removing someone’s bedroom door, especially the door of a teenage. Privacy is super important at any age, but especially when you’re in your teens

Yeah normally, mother-daughter relationships in movies often show the daughter as being unlikeable/ungrateful & you want to side with the mother most times, however, Anna's feelings were 110% valid throughout the film & I hated how she was treated. 😭

My job doesn't suck but having to say hello to everyone is annoying. I seriously got scolded after the first few months at my current job for not saying hello to everyone. They said I'm impolite. We're only 2 people per office why do I have to yell good morning to everyone I see across the hall 🤮

I switch it up to say "yo" or "sup" which are a lot easier and match my personality better (I help housekeepers in a hotel along with other guys who are casual like me)

@@therealMrA well good morning hello whatever I want to say. Good morning is easier because in German we have the polite form. So co workers I haven't talked to much I'd have to wonder what to say. Luckily Lockdown helped me (most employees are in home office but only the ones who were there over 3 years at time of the Lockdown amI started in November 2019, that and going downstairs with smokers so I got to know the remaining people a little although I don't smoke. I'm just an introvert I don't run around introducing myself to everyone. By now I've chatted with Co workers where I wonder if I would recognize them when they return to the office.

@@stephjovi Cool! I'm American so the difference in our respective language situations was particularly interesting to read about. The hotel where I work is in Manhattan in New York City, and the employees there speak as much Spanish, Mandarin, and Tibetan as they do English. I'm grateful as I can very easily peer into many different cultures working there. "Good morning" is one of the phrases they say often as it's probably taught to ESL speakers as a standard greeting. I just respond as I do but they know I love them lol

Can I just say, as a licensed therapist, that in no world would someone be going to a regular outpatient therapist every single day, much less for so long. At that point they clearly need to be in IOP, partial hospitalization, or full on psychiatric inpatient. It would be highly unethical and verging on illegal to see someone like that for treatment.

@@thegayestgoth An outpatient therapist isn’t equipped to be able to properly handle that client’s needs, and they need to be in a higher level of care. I’m not saying that an outpatient therapist is incompetent in working with high needs clients (before I began outpatient private practice I worked as an inpatient counselor, so I have the experience), but it’s about a combination of not being available for crisis 24/7, not being able to provide higher level services (medication, etc.), the client not being in a safe contained place if they need to be, etc. The client in the movie has a clearly highly disrupted life by his disorder and the 3-year-long run of treatment clearly isn’t enough to actually get him stable and to start to work towards maintenance.

I wish more people would talk about the characterization of mental illness in movies/tv. We're FINALLY having conversations about stereotypes and racism in Hollywood, but the one area that hasn't yet been challenged is the depiction of mental illness and ESPECIALLY how it's used as a joke. I'm so sick of "schizophrenia" being a punchline, or characters referring to the "loony bin" or "insane asylum" or even just being "crazy." It's so gross and harmful.

Also drug addiction. I think it's getting a little bit better, but for the most part no. Even though the DSM classifies it as a disease people still wanna act like they know more than doctors. " You chose to do drugs/drink alcohol so it's your fault" is said too often. Like okay 1. Most opiate addicts actually were given it by their doctors first and became addicted. 2. Drinking is a social norm and no one can know they are going to become alcoholic until they do which by that point it's too late without help. 3. Even in all other cases where someone did decide to try a drug, that mistake (which everyone on this planet has made more than a few mistakes in their life) shouldn't define them as just another junkie. 4. People who have lung cancer because they smoked when they were younger or even older aren't treated like crap for having cancer because it was their choice to smoke. It's a mental health issue all the same and maybe if we had more mental health resources less people would suffer from addiction. It's self medicating at it's worst, and sadly if there was less negative stigma towards it, more addicts/alcoholics would reach out for help.

What also drives me crazy about the stigma is that substance abuse/addiction rates are extremely high among doctors, but they think of themselves as "different" than the average addict because of their profession and wealthy. I'm an anesthesiologist... I see it first-hand all the time. All the low-income people are just "junkies" to them, even though most of the low-income people we see are that way because of chronic illness.

We’re finally starting to see SOME better representations for stuff like depression and anxiety, but neurodiversity representation still feels decades in the past, especially with the gender disparity.

You know it’s funny, usually when we rewatch these kind of movies as adults we realize that maybe the kids are being overly dramatic, or we at least see things from the adult perspective a little better. However, with this movie I feel like I completely understand why Anna is so distraught the entire time and I would probably have hated my mom too if she treated me that way!

Taking the doors off was THE punishment when I was a teenager. It was a constant threat that was thrown out any time I talked back or was "acting like a teenager". I always thought that it was because I spent so much time closed off in there, but now that I think about it, I realize that my parents never really made sure that the punishment fit the crime... they just grabbed at whatever punishment would have the most impact

When I was going through self-harm and suicidal thoughts my privacy was always threatened. I could never even express my mental health issues without either being yelled at or threatened with my privacy being taken away

@@elipeeli Same with my dad. I tell him I don’t feel safe alone and I need him to stay with me and he just says “you’re 17. you’ll be fine” and I say no I’m not stable right now and I’m asking for your help as my guardian and he threatens to send me away to foster care or a mental hospital

Lock parents do they think is best and I mean newsflash you’re paying a bill and you as an adult should know that now you’re paying the bills you don’t on until you the day you were taking years old your parents are in control and they have every right to remove that door because you don’t have no right to talk to back and do the fuck you wanna do and he was an adult should know that by now no I never have my mother ever do that to me you’re a parent is different but the same time I was nowhere or my parents said it was best because they’re scared of that I hit the kids and beat the kids all the time it doesn’t mean you agree with it but you get the hell over until the day you were 18 years old and you don’t really pay for that room so so guess what is there damn room

In what world did it look like Jamie Lee was actually playing? I play guitar along with most of my friends and at no point did it ever look like they were actually playing my of the guitar parts. Maybe just the opening chords but the rest they definitely were not playing. So if they claimed this then it was B's. People do lie you know.

As the child of a licensed, practicing psychologist with a Ph.D., the mom is actually VERY well written and really represents what it's like to be raised by a mental health professional. My only note is that in my experience, they tend to use their knowledge of psychology to be a lot more covert and subtle with the devastating emotional abuse they put their children through.

Oh it absolutely teaches the kid a lesson - it teaches them that their room's privacy and safety can be taken away for unknown reasons at any time, and they should never trust authority figures, least of all their own parents. Maybe the mom's more shrewd than we thought, because she's basically creating her own future client here.

Once, my SO's father who had a PHD in psychology used his knowledge of the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia to have me forcibly admitted to an inpatient facility. Why? Because I had bruises and a black eye, so it was the best way to keep up appearances. (Obviously I'm not with that SO anymore either.)

I was raised by a narcissistic abusive mother and she acted almost exactly like Jamie Lee’s character in this movie, only my mom was much worse. Watching this as a kid, I thought this was all so normal but there is nothing better than Nick breaking things down, clip by clip. Yikes. Thank god for real therapy and not the bullshit they represented in this movie.

The book and both movies make me cry bc of their dumb "reconciliation / empathy" scenes during the climax. Also I love Jamie Lee Curtis and I think she did an outstanding job portraying a teenager's energy and carefree attitude on that terrible talk show segment.

I like the way the swap is handled in the stage musical, because the mom and daughter fight over an hourglass that used to be the dead dad’s and when they break it they swap. The musical implies that it’s the ghost of the dead dad through the hourglass that switches them, and that he did it to show the daughter that he was okay with the mom moving on and to show the mom that he was happy she found someone that made her happy.

the original book was weird as hell. it's all from the pov of anna-in-her-mom's-body, we never see what the mom is doing? and in the end it turns out her mom did it to be like "now you know how i feel!" and i don't remember it being explained anyway i wish they had acted the scenes with the roles switched so that jamie lee and lindsey could mimic each other's acting styles. after the switch it was like watching two whole new characters lol

It reminded me of when I was volunteering for an elementary school and there was this set of twins who were total opposites. The more sensitive, anxious one started bawling in class one day so I walked over and asked what was wrong and through hear tears and snot she cried, 'I-I..I wanna use th-the YELLOW CRAYOOOONNN!" It's hard to accept that about yourself especially since your mother is supposed to be one of the most vital people in helping you shape your sense of self from an early age. For me, that realization came coupled with immense guilt. I couldn't fully get over that until I started therapy, but my childhood maternal figure isn't in my life anymore and I'm doing better than ever. I hope the same is true for you 💚

The movie creators were going to make a sequel to this movie having Harry and the Grandpa switch bodies. However, the creators got told no right before they finished filming the movie. There is an alternate ending where the Chinese restaurant worker doesn’t grab the cookies in time to stop Harry and Grandpa from breaking them.

Sidenote: my bestie is absolutely in love with Chad Michael Murray (not in an obsessed way, in a dreamy way "knowing" she'd probably never meet him). In 2018 he was at comic-con promoting his book (iirc, it's a fantasy novel, not that stupid biography or self- help crap famous people do these days). He was sooo nice! She fangirled out a bit and went speechless, so I gently motivated her by saying she's a big fan of fantasy novels (she is, her dad has a MASSIVE book collection) and that it's so cool/nice he wasn't _requiring_ people to buy it to meet him or charging for pics, and pushed the conversation to her. Since he didn't have a line, she ended up speaking w/him for a decent amount of time and he was genuinely soo nice and kind. He chuckled at her initial silence and said it was ok and a nice change to fans who just lose their minds (you know, those ridiculously obsessed fans). It was probably one of the most memorable moments we had in 10yrs of going. Such a kind and sweet guy ☺️

Lindsay Lohan's style in this movie was definitely in the same family of my own style as a teenager of the time. Especially the converses half done up are such a blast to the past. I used to put all kinds of new shoelaces in them, including fluorescent pink and yellow ones, polka doted ones and a super aggressive leopard print pair of shoe laces that was twice the thickness of a regular pair. I was very much of the short sleeved t-shirts over long sleeve shirts variety though. I had many friends with the lower belly showing but my mum wouldn't allow me because she thought I would get a bladder infection hahaha

She said it was something from her youth (60's/70's) because I was definitely protesting and she said girls in her class were always getting bladder infections haha To be fair, I knew a lot of girls who got bladder infections but never me lol Also, my mum might've been worried for my health in general because as a young kid I was super sickly. My mum's great though, has always encouraged and supported me and I had a lot of freedom growing up without ever feeling neglected. I'll take the "tuck in your undershirt, you might get a cold and develop a bladder infection!" if that's all haha

@@littlemissmello I think UTI's are most commonly caused by not urinating after sex or wiping their bum back to front instead of front to back. I've never had one either.

@@em84c UTIs can be caused by numerous reasons. The 2 you included here, as well as not urinating when you feel the urge, bad hygiene, etc. My first UTI was when I was 11, my parents, sister, and I were moving across the country, and I didn't urinate in time and wound up getting a UTI.

From my own experience, when a parent is therapist they learn that they really only have to apply that in the professional setting. I've seen my friend's and my parents just go home and be horrible to their kids. It's also the fact that they don't get therapy because they don't think they need it.

I'm irritated that mom had clients scheduled the day before her wedding.... because why would you do that? And that the mom went to school for the daughter to take this test. Call in sick for the daughter. I hate storylines that have issues that could be solved simply.
