Movies where there's a child in an adult body make me very uncomfortable but I think Jennifer Garner was adorable in this movie. She really sold it.

True, "Big" is kind of disturbing, and if the genders were reversed with an adult man sleeping with a teenage girl in the body of an adult woman, there would be a lot more uproar.

While I love this movie, it always seemed odd that Jenna's neighbours were apparently cool with their 13 year old daughters having a sleepover at a strange adult's house. While she IS mentally the same age as them, and WE know that she's totally harmless, the parents wouldn't.

Totally fair assessment. I did do this as a 14 year old and it was really just like an “aunt” situation though. Fun fact! Originally the movie had a scene where Matt took Jenna to the hospital and got her a CAT scan (and they said there was nothing wrong with her). I never understood why they cut it, because it made Matt look a lot more responsible. EDIT: I actually found the scene here. I was wrong about it being a CAT scan though, it was an MRI. I don't really mind the magic pixie dust not being explained, and personally I kinda wish more movies would take this approach sometimes instead of coming up with some explanation that I don't care about lol. I like that it just says "This is what's happening, make your peace with it and let's go so we can actually tell the story." That being said, I do agree with most of the other weak points you mentioned like esp no one thinking Jenna might need some kind of medical attention.
@ssharkbait
@ssharkbait 2 года назад
Yeah exactly. I think the only time it needs to be explained is if magic is central to the world or plot. Like the magic in Harry Potter needs to be explained, but in a movie like this? Doesn’t matter. The magic is just a device here. I thing explaining things in certain genres just takes the fun out of them. Most rom coms don’t make much sense logically and have ridiculous set ups, but I think that’s the point. Wasting time explaining something will just slow everything down. Also sometimes it’s okay to let the audience fill in those gaps themselves. Really just depends on the movies ultimate intentions.
@euro-trashling
@euro-trashling 2 года назад
Yeah. It's a movie. The whole thing is a metaphor for "be careful what you wish for". It doesn't matter how she transported into this alt universe where she's 30, what's important is what she learned at the end of this journey.

CF The Hudsucker Proxy, or Wild At Heart, or any of ten thousand movies that use some visual cue to mark a turn into a fantasy world or dream narrative. It's a super common device, actually, if one looks for it. This movie is no different from La Belle et la Bête, on some level at least (but not on most levels). heh
@LunarEleven

I agree. This movie isn't about the magic, I don't need to hear the lore. It's not going to satisfyingly make sense anyway, so I'd rather skip whatever contrived mystical nonsense they'd come up with.

I agree. Although it’s a totally different genre, I always think of Jordan Peele’s Us as an example of a movie that overexplained the “supernatural” element and ended up creating more questions and plot holes than if it had just been left up the audience to accept it or not.

25:14 Just some sad history about Charles Dickens: he treated his wife terribly, cheated on her, and forced her out of the family home. They lived separately with little to no contact, and he turned their children against her. She struggled with what might’ve been postpartum depression, or some other form of depression, and he just dropped her. For all his sympathy for the poor laboring class and children in Victorian England, he seems to have been a rather impatient man in his personal life.

I think they did establish that Jenna wasn't a good person early on with how scared her assistant was of her. And her neighbor saying she ignores her. Also when Matt said he didnt even run into her at Christmas this is how Jenna knew she didnt go home to see her parents for Christmas (matt would likely be going to his parents next door).
@ssharkbait
@ssharkbait 2 года назад
Also with sleeping with the married guy. They gave a lot of context clues as to the kind of person she was and how different she was by how everyone reacted to her change.
@therealMrA
@therealMrA 2 года назад
Except for the assistant none that is really indicative of anything. Would you chat up every child in your building? Because I wouldn't. What if Jenna's parents did something really terrible to her that they refuse to acknowledge properly and she can't be happy in their presence? What if she was just really busy last Christmas? If the movie intended this to paint an explicit picture of the morality of adult Jenna then I say it failed, and the subdued "she's hungover" reaction by other characters in general (and especially Lucy) to her personality change makes it feel as if she isn't really all that different than usual to them.

When you mention the whole "Jenna finds out she's actually a terrible person in her 30s", I think they DO try to do it early on, it's just not effective. When Jenna gets in the elevator and says morning to the girl and she's like "wtf why are you saying hi to me"... I think that convo would have worked if the conversation didn't take place in the elevator because in my mind not saying hi in an elevator is fairly normal. There's nothing truly "huh okay" about that moment unless you get to the 50 min mark and they expand on how awful she really is.

A few things: 1) This movie came out when I was 13 and I just turned 30 last year so of COURSE I bought that multicolored knock off dress. Sadly I was drugged by the end of the night, so that wasn’t cool. Thank goodness for caring friends that helped me 🧡 2) I had this movie on my pink iPod, so whenever I was grounded, I’d watch it under my covers. So I’ve seen this film A LOT. 3) I always questioned the slumber party scene. If I had like 15 teens over at my place as a 30 yr old…I just…no.

Awesome advice! Here's some more that I hope still applies today (I was in my younger 20's and it was the early 2000's when I got this advice). GHB has a salty taste to it. I believe even in small doses. So it can alter the taste of your drinks noticeably. If you're not going out for alcohol to experience new drinks, I suggest always ordering something your are familiar with taste of. Even if you're ordering from a different place, typically the taste isn't that much of a difference (unless the server or bartender didn't mix is accurately enough). If someone roofies your drink, you should be able to taste it fast enough to let someone know your drink tastes abnormal. I also think it's adorable you watched this movie under your blanket. lol. I sort of did the same when I was a kid, but it was me putting my TV in the closet so I could watch a Madonna concert that a channel was airing. This was the later 80s. lol.

The idea of her losing a parent as an adult is such a good one! Imagine if they still had that moment when she was 13 and her parents embarrassing her with the camera, but they set one parent as having a more difficult relationship with Jenna. Nothing where the parent was actively mean; just where you could tell they still saw her as a baby and she wanted to be seen as grown up. Then that could have been paid off in a moment of finding out that they died. It could have led to some real tear jerker moments in the wrap up too. I literally started tearing up just thinking about it lol. Also could have been good for setting up other reasons why Jenna turned cold, rather than it being a single instance that changed her personality forever.

Also totally forgot how Matt has like. A thousand random talents. I love this movie but looking back at it, they didn't do a great job of showing how she could have benefitted Matt's life. I still think it works best if Matt isn't in a bad place but I do feel like they could have shown some little hints that Matt's life might be improved by his and Jenna's relationship. Like maybe if Matt wasn't a photographer as an adult (he has a relatively normal paying job but he doesn't have much passion for it) and at the beginning you had shown that she was very encouraging of his photography. Or if you kept him having a million talents but that was kind of a problem. In adulthood he never could settle on one, so he just went for something safe. At the beginning of the movie maybe they could have shown that there was a yearbook project to say what you wanted to be by the time you were 30 (to tie into the 30 theme) and he was having difficulty deciding. Then maybe Jenna sets up some kind of game to help him choose. Let's say it's pick a job out of a hat. She even tells him that if he doesn't like the one he gets, he knows that's not the one for him. Of course, they never get to play the game bc the popular kids arrive. Then it sets up that maybe if he still had Jenna, she would have helped him choose. Again I do like that Matt is still doing pretty good without her bc it makes the ending tie together really well, but it could have been nice to have some hints that Matt's life would be improved with her in it. Rather than just...Jenna's life being improved with Matt in it.

I think Nick is forgetting that the sheer fact that Jenna is friends with Lucy, already shows that Jenna is not a good person, so we don't really need flashbacks to when Jenna was terrible because we can already figure that out from context. Also her assistant was absolutely terrified of her, which Nick said would have been exposition to show she's awful. I think Nick just forgot about that, because it was very brief because when Jenna is nice to her, they have a better relationship. I think I was around 10 the first time I watched this movie (and it became a central part of my personality ever since!), and I could figure out all those things from context, and then it's confirmed even more until the 50 minute mark, and when she looks at the yearbook. I agree with most of the things Nick said, I love his commentary, but I think he just missed a few details. But I don't expect Nick to have memorized and basically absorb this movie into his very being like I did🤣🤣🤣

Though as an adult now, the scenes of Jenna going back home and getting comforted by her parents bc being a grown up is hard and scary and just too much to handle - those scenes became my favorite part of the movie, purely for how much it resonates with me now (also, Vienna is a great song).
