Now why can't I live next door to you so that you can teach me to sew with ease. There are a lot of how to do tutorials on you tube, but I like yours so much because you get to the point quickly and you explain with precision. Thankyou!

An insane amount of ease in that sleeve. If you were a beginner you would abandon the project, no wonder there are so many sewist showing a kind of puff sleeve head on their projects. The Big 4 making it a lot harder than it should be. Good technique.

There is SO much ease in that sleeve cap. I’m going to remove the excess in next week’s sew along so hopefully that will help some!

I was sewing a new pattern and wasn’t really paying attention so I sewed the side seams of the dress before setting in the sleeves (I usually set them in flat). I had just watched this video and thought I would try it. And it worked perfectly! Thank you for this time saving tip.

Wow thankyou. I did not know you could solve an insane amt. of ease by leaving some of the sleeve cap uneven. I thought the two raw edges always had to be even. Thankyou for this invaluable lesson. Mind blown
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
I normally will leave the raw edges together. I actually went back and removed the extra sleeve cap ease from the pattern piece and it fits perfectly now. This, however, totally works in a pinch!

It’d be great to see how you would adjust that princess seam. I have to routinely lower apex anywhere from 1/2 to a full inch on any given pattern. I find princess seams a pain because of the complexity of it, I’ve done it before, and attempting a block so I have something to draw from, but I was curious /interested.

Great idea, inserting sleeves is one of the most difficult part of dressmaking. I will use this in association with Vivmoms video. She does do a gathering stitch but as she is sewing it she keeps her finger behind the needle. The sleeve head comes out with a very even, very slight gather which she does not pull up. Thank you for doing these videos.

Me too! It was a game changer for me. I always used the over the finger and pin method, but this is so much faster. And like she said, most sleeves don't have that much ease and shouldn't.
@TomKatStitchery

I use the over the finger and pin method for coats and jackets where there is supposed to be more ease. This works like a charm for everything else. I’m going to remove the excess ease in the sew along next week!

Why do some patterns have so much ease and others not? I recently saw somebody set in a sleeve flat where there wasn't any ease. Can you explain a bit more. I have learned so much from you and really love all your videos and makes. Thanks!!
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
You need some ease in a woven sleeve cap so that you can easily move. The amount depends on what you’re making (generally rule of thumb is that more ease is required for thicker fabrics so a wool coat or blazer should have more ease than a shirt). However, when it comes to knit garments, the ease isn’t needed because the fabric stretches so quite a few times, knit t-shirts will have very little if any ease in their sleeve caps.

I'm looking forward to trying this for both situations. Whitney, why do some sewists insist woven sleeves should be inserted in the round and not flat?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
I’m not entirely sure as putting a shirt sleeve in flat is SO much easier, but my guess would be that it allows you to build in more shape. I think it’s fine to do either way, but I find the flat so much easier and do it when I can (you have to sew it in in the round if you have a two piece sleeve).

Thanks for showing that method Whitney. I almost always sew with a walking foot on my machine. Should I not use it for this method?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
For this method, you want the easing that the feed dogs give, so I would forgo the walking foot for this.

Hi Whitney! So at the point of the shoulder seam why can’t you just go in (before putting yourself thru this agony)remake the sleeve cap?or just sew a smaller seam allowance
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
For my final of this pattern, I’m going to remove the excess ease from the pattern before I cut. However, if you aren’t realizing it until you are sewing the item up, just scooting the top of the sleeve cap up will do the same as removing it from the pattern.
@rosemarybarrett7650
@rosemarybarrett7650 4 года назад
That’s very helpful. I also never know the “ tolerance “ so I tend to overfit. Maybe that is something you can continue to point out. How much length to allow for shoulder and- is it the same on knits and woven?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
I can definitely talk more about ease. For this pattern, in particular, I’m going to remove the excess ease from the sleeve cap and I’ll show the process. That will probably be in this coming Sunday’s sew along!

Whitney I hate to ask a dumb question, but because you're fingers are hidden I am not 100% sure which direction you mean when you pull the fabric. Are you pulling straight away from the seam?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
Not a dumb question at all! I’m pulling the sleeve back away from the sewing machine or seam so that the cut edges match up.

Your Rhapsody blouse is beautiful, is it linen? I was not a huge fan of the first one I made. I think that using double gauze was part of the problem, and I may need a petite bust adjustment (I never know how to figure it out) so I am gonna try again, I love the style of that top!
@denisedorsey2889
@denisedorsey2889 4 года назад
Sarah R My first Rhapsody dress was a hot mess! I also used double gauze and the bodice was so large that I tried to salvage it by adding "fashion" darts across the back neckline. The front neckline was also a mess. Too low, too loose. I cut the correct size according to all measurements. I blame the fabric (as well as my lack of experience). I just think everything stretched out, but I also considered a petite adjustment. I didn't sew a muslin because I just didn't have anything similar to use. I eventually gave it up as a painful learning project. I cut off the skirt, redid the casing and now I have a skirt, at least. Not sure how much wear it will get. 😜 I love the look of the Rhapsody so I think I will give it another go as well. Eventually, lol.
