Thanks for the inspiration, not only did you bag the entire coat, avoiding any hand stitching at all, but you used a ‘formal’ fabric and the fancy Chanel treatment on the edges in an every day, wearable style! Brilliant, Whitney! Thanks. And the tip about lining an unlined coat is genius too. I wondered why you were putting in the lifeline seam in the side and not in the sleeve like I’ve seen so many times. Easier access to each sleeve. Again, brilliant. Will watch this again. And then take another look at the stash I inherited from Mom, beautiful Italian wools - from crepe to a coat weight - but I basically am at home now (everyone is, but the best of times I still am). Don’t need a fancy suit anymore.

"it isn't very intuitive".. that is what messes with me when doing linings.. it doesn't make sense in my brain, so my "logic" steps in to the part that just wants to follow the directions and hope for the best. I can guarantee losing a lot of time unpicking stitches when my project includes a lining or facing. I am trying to train myself to just learn the steps and not try to make those steps make any sense in my brain, which seems to be the way that has worked best for me so far. Just taking it on faith and moving forward ;) I love the boucle! I imagine I will be staying away from that type of fabric until I have a machine better able to deal with that fraying though.. extra kudos for the way you made such a tricky fabric look pretty easy to handle. That is skill.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 3 года назад
I’m so glad this was helpful! Try the bagged lining a couple of times and it will become intuitive. The first few times I bagged a lining I had to go back and watch it being done again.

I forgot to tell how much I enjoyed your tutorial to put in a jean's zipper. It could be intimidating, but you showed us how easy it could be. Thank you. I love the fabric, but could be unfriendly to use sometimes because of raveling. Do you find this fabric bulky to sew?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 3 года назад
Boucle can be a bit annoying because of the fraying. It can also get bulky because of the differing widths of yarns that make up the fabric. However, with careful sewing (and limited handling of the cut fabric) it’s not too bad!

How did you make sure that the lining of the sleeve was going to be shorter than the sleeve of the jacket?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 3 года назад
It is identical to the outside fabric. This cheater way doesn’t have the jump pleats that a properly lined jacket to have. Because I trimmed the edge of jacket, it keeps the lining from popping out.

For this jacket, if u have to adjust the width in the arms, how would you adjust to that.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 3 года назад
Grown on sleeves are a bit harder than a set in sleeve to add width. Depending on how much you need, you can just add to under/side seam. You can also draw a line straight from the side seam to the shoulder, cut the sleeve off, slash and spread the sleeve (don’t change the width at the end that connects back to the jacket) and then reattach it to the jacket. Does that make sense?
