I've put this video together as I couldn't find a good guide myself, and couldn't get an international firmware version, so got the EU LBT version and reflashed it over the international firmware.
When they are in stock, you can get these from Banggood here (affiliate link):
www.banggood.com/Frsky-XM-Micr...
In the UK I picked one up from ElectronicWingman as I needed a few other bits from them:
www.electricwingman.com/frsky...
I've set this out to be newbie friendly, so apologies if it all seems a bit too obvious in parts.
Amendum: This is an answer to a comment where someone said they only get the delete option when the highlight the firmware file. Make sure you update your OpenTX firmware :)
One thing I didn't mention as I figured everyone might be on the later radios now is the firmware running on your Taranis. To flash receivers, you'll need to be on OpenTX 2.1 (I thought it was just people like me that got the original batch that needed to think of it) Upgrading is a doddle, but if you are moving from a much earlier version you might need to change a few models as some of the mix sources might change (So I found some that should have been MAX were set to something else) but you can backup everything first. Go to www.open-tx.org/ and download the OpenTX companion - this will let you backup your radio and upgrade the firmware then you can get going again :)

Brilliant video! I've just found out that my new XM+ receiver has the wrong firmware for my transmitter and I didn't want to risk updating the firmware via the S.Bus pin!!!! I spotted your video, where you risked your receiver for the benefit of the rest of us. Thank you. :)

Thank you for the informative video. I was able to successfully update the firmware but I cant get into bind mode. When I hold down the bind button and power up all I get is a solid red light. No green light at all. Ive tried all of the different firmware versions (fcc/lbt) and checked the power source is a steady 5v. Even tried the old pre 2.x.x firmwares. Any ideas?

Hi Wayne, I have just flashed my XM+ to include RSSI and all looks like it went well, weird thing is I didn't need to re-bind afterwards though which has thrown me a little, have you ever had this happen? Just went from FCC to FCC with rssi.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 лет назад
I don't know to be honest. I generally do the flashing before I ever bind it and solder in place.... I might have reflashed, but then I can't remember if I rebound afterwards. Could be that (guesswork here) the bind info if kept on a complete seperate bit of NVRAM (or something) that where the FW lives. Pure speculation, I'm not at all sure of the makeup of these things :)

hey, thanks for the video BUT, i flashed it with normal polarity on my x7, successfully... at least the flashing part. i can´t seem to bind the x7 with the XM+, x7 firmware is EU and the XM+ too, i even tried several versions, but always the solid red and green lights... can you or somebody else help me on that one?

I noticed that someone once had an issue binding to an XM+ from a Q7 on the EU versions and eventually worked it back as being the version on my internal XJT module (see here www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,52591.15.html) I don't know if this is the case, it's certainly complaining about firmware mismatch - worth checking out what version of the Internal module firmware you are using.

Hi Wayne. Will this work with a Jumper T16 as well? I've got a brand new GEPRC Phantom (toothpick) with XM+ and I'm not getting RSSI in my OSD or on the Jumper's screen. I've set RSSI to aux 14 in the Receiver page in Betaflight and aux14 is jumping around like mad, but nothing in OSD or TX screen... Not sure what to do to get RSSI. @8:50, you mentioned that these RXs "don't do telemetry", and then go on to explain you *CAN'T* use RSSI to find a downed quad? That confused me.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 3 года назад
Definitely aux14? Normally you'll see RSSI on channel 16, which is aux12. If it is 14 then it's probably not RSSI as these can only use 16 channels and aux14 would be channel 18. Make sure you have OSD active on your OSD screen as well. But yes, you can flash the T16 with the pins in the modul bay in the same way as a Taranis. As far as telemetry goes - the XM+ isn't a telemetry receiver, it doesn't send any info back to the quad. If you do get a telemetry signal (such as from an R-XSR) then should you lose your video in a crash you can look at the RSSI on your radio screen to work out if you are getting closer/further away from your quad. You could do this, of course, on an XM+ if you are still getting a video signal nicely - but when upside down in a thick bush, you have to be a lot closer.
@Grumpyoldtwit

Hi, I have 2 of these XM+ recievers , I have tried to bind them to my tyro119, it does bind and my channels work but I keep getting badrx and rxloss when trying to arm... Will flashing the XM+ resolve my issue???
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 2 года назад
On one occasion I've had a very poor range rx which was solved by reflashing - but it's more the exception to the rule. Certainly doesn't hurt to try, but before that I would check all your wiring/solder. If you are getting bad rx/rx loss try powering on and hold the rx in your fingers/thumbs and put light pressure on different parts to see if any led's go out, or it produces those errors on your OSD. It's more likely the case that either a physical connection/wire or the rx is bad.

Good presentation helped me alot - you having a Mac did throw me a bit, but reading between the lines did manage too bind my XM+ thanx Did notice that your taranis RF Mode was set at D16 and channel range = ch1-8 why not ch1-16. Would it mean your Tx transmit only 8channels...joe
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 лет назад
I didn't notice that. I did start using 8 channels as I figure I wouldn't need 16 and you can use a lower frame rate which means that you'd get ever such slightly less latency. However, having tried both I do't notice the difference at all, so I now normally use 16 channels with ch 16 as RSSI
@joestubbs3138
@joestubbs3138 6 лет назад
Gotcha - so a year has passed since you did the video and the update version has changed (now V170313) = progress There are 6 listed downloads within V170313, numbers 4 and 6 applies to me, I notice that No6 has a reference to RSSI does that mean it would give me acess to RSSI cos I chose No4 with out it...joe
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 лет назад
I did another update video on this BTW, but now super-new info. The clue is in the titles for the type of firmware you have, so in the 170313 zip you will have FCC170313 and LBT170313 varients depending on what sort offirmware you are running. Then the just .frk file - the standard 16 channel firmware, then the RSSI8.frk and RSSI16.frk which are the versions that have the RSSI output on channel 8 or 16
@roberttruesdell6151
@roberttruesdell6151 2 года назад
only use ch1-16 if you need all 16 channels. otherwise use 1-8 the latency is less.

hi, can you flash the firmware on the r-xsr while it is in situ through beta flight or similar? recently just refreshed everything else over to EU and my non eu quad won't bind. id rather do it in place than take it all apart. cheers. great videos by the way :)
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 лет назад
Well, there's no passthrough via an FC if that's what you mean, you have to physically connect the Taranis to the receiver. On the bright side though, at least the R-XSR has a connector that you can take off and reconnect.... unlike an XM+ where you mostly have to resolder/resolder

Please help why does this stuff have to be so confusing. I have no green LED from my xm frysky receiver only red led flashing when trying to bind no matter what i try Does this mean that the receiver is bad?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Your receiver is going into bind mode - which is a good step (solid red light would be much worse) if you radio isn't binding with the receiver, the most obvious thing to check is whether your Taranis's internal XJT module is running the same type of firmware as the RX (either international or EU) ?
@jandomingo9806
@jandomingo9806 6 лет назад
Curious... when you bind a xm+. Do i choose 1-16 telem on or 1-16 telem off... or the 1st 2 option with 1-8 telem on or 1-8 telem off? I bound to 1-16 telem off.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 лет назад
Jan Domingo just to be clear, it's not a binding option (it's which firmware you flash it with) and it's not telemetry (it's RSSI) I generally use 16 channels where ch16 is RSSI
@jandomingo9806

CurryKitten i understand that. What im asking when binding a xm+ to my qx7 which option do i choose?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 лет назад
Jan Domingo ah ok. I don't remember having the option to tell the radio to expect telemetry or not (away from radio this week) you want an x16. So 16 channels, no telem

ok new problem with new a XM+, FW flashes fine no problem there but when trying to bind i don`t get red and green flashing just solid.. ive tried same fw version you are using and 2 other LBT versions.. ive only got the XM+ connected to FC BF F3 board using USB which powers 5v to the FC so not in a fully built frame but that shouldn't matter as it has power. any ideas ?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
As long as the rx is getting power from somewhere, it's not fussy - so your config isn't an issue. Are you running LBT on your radio, or the International firmware (as you've said you've tried both) obviously you need to make sure you are matching up on both here, else they won't bind at all. If that looks good make sure your rx and radio are separated with a bit more space - mine were a bit close here, and the signal can overwhelm the rx.
@serval_fpv
@serval_fpv 7 лет назад
CurryKitten I updated taranis before using opentx so I would have thought it would auto detect which firmware to install.. you think there is a way to download EU taranis FW manually ?? I was meaning I tried 2 different XM+ FW versions but both LBT..
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Ah - ok. There's the firmware running on the Taranis, the OS if you will, and then there's the firmware that runs on the internal XJT module in the Taranis, which is where the whole EU/nonEU versions come into play. I've not touched mine, so I can't speak from experience, but you should be able to get it here www.frsky-rc.com/download/view.php?sort=&down=232&file=Firmware-XJT and then flash your internal TX with it. Hopefully things will all match up then and bind for you

Sorry, it was a bit dark there filming into a black against black thing. So bottom pin in the module bay is signal, next pin up is ground and next one up is is 5v. The top two pins in the bay aren't used. I put out an updated video to this here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3NObP3uhaao.html where you can hopefully see them a bit clearer

Cheaper from China. I flash all mine as a matter of course now - mainly because I want the RSSI version of the firmware (that puts RSSI PWM out on ch 16) They are so trivial to flash that I don't even make any proper connections, I just hold in the pin headers until it's done :)
@EnglishTurbines
@EnglishTurbines 6 лет назад
Yeah, cheaper, but I didn't want to wait...I liked how you re-named the Firmware file into something far more appropriate, what is it about naming Firmware Files and software engineers..?...They all do it, it must be in their Genes or something.

Clearly a build prefix which makes sense for versioning, but less for consumers

LOL...yeah, its like they want to keep it a secret from their end users, just to confuse them fully and piss them off...:) Pretty sure they could include the RX type AND the build # in the title..? I had to flash my new XM Plus with the latest firmware in order to get RSSI out along channel 16....Works good in iNAV...Actually 29/3/2017 is the latest version of the Firmware.

@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
There's some EU rule so this is FrSky making their receivers compliant. LBT means "Listen before talk". I don't know what this entails, but I do know that the sensitivity of the receivers are reduced, and hence range is impacted.

@CurryKitten

You need to match the firmware on the receiver with what's on your radio. It basically comes down to running the International firmware, or the EU LBT one. If they don't match, you won't be able to bind

@CurryKitten

How much movement are they having - you might see a bit of jitter where it moves up and down a few points, but not huge movments. So things to check: do you definately have the right UART selected for SBUS (try the others as an easy test). Check you have the right serial provider setup in your configuration TAB (SBUS for FrSky)

If you can take me through what you've done to setup so far, that might help. Did you calibrate your ESCs (don't need to if running dshot) ?If you go into the motor tab (take your props off) and run each motor up, is everything smooth - do you see any excessive vibration in the graphs when these motors are spun up ? What mode are you attempting to fly in ?
@Tomytoka
@Tomytoka 6 лет назад
okay when i finished soldering i enter in betaflight and flash the fc to the newest version and i did the same with the esc's then i started configuring the controller with betafligh and change the inputs because they where inverted and i set up the arm , failsafe and angle switches so it should be ready to flight (i have calibrated the esc's ) and sometimes i move the stick and the drone dosen't act at all and i unplug the batery and plug it again and slowly start moving the throttle and when i reach more than the half of the throttle the motors start moving unevenly and it flips. I don't know what i have done wrong or what to do now

I can see why you would want to flash this to a non EU version as all your kit is non EU but if you were starting out would you just stick with the EU version?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
It's more about matching it up with what you radio is running. So if you bought a Taranis from the UK then it'll have the EU firmware (not that you can't change that as well) but as I mentioned sometimes you'll find receivers at super cheap prices at the big Chinese warehouses like Banggood in which case you'd want to flash these from the International firmware to EU. Part of the reason I'm on International, is they didn't have the EU version when I got it, but also the EU version has a lower sensitivity (-90dBm vs -104dBm on International) which translates into lower range. For most people - especially not pushing the limits, it's unlikely to be a problem - but for me I'll stick with what I have :)

If you get a green and red light when you are attempting to bind, it signifies that there's a firmware mismatch. Coming from banggood it'll probably be running International/FCC firmware, if you are in Europe you are likely to have the LBT version of the firmware on the radio... in which case flash the LBT firmware onto the XM (see video on how).

CurryKitten i got the taranis from hobbyking.com i live in the US. Is there a way to find out what version is my taranis.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 лет назад
As far as which version of the firmware you are running in the internal module, no. But based on you being in the US and buying from HK, odds on you'd have the FCC version. So does the XM rx show both LEDs just when you turn it on, or only when you attempt to bind to it ?

I have a devo 7e and finally got a successful bind last night, range test was great everything working smoothly. It was bound for maybe and hour. I was getting a perfect signal in test mode no matter how hard I tried to make it loose signal around the house. Xm+ here. I was in betaflight setting some switches up and the receiver just stopped working. I was changing the aux channels on the transmitter for flight modes in betaflight and it just stopped receiving. When I power it lights up dim solid green/red and doesn't do anything, no different if I power it on while holding the bind key. It should be a bright solid green and blinking red in bind mode. Sometimes if I wait a while to plug a battery in and don't hit the bind key it will light up solid red. I tried to bind it again but nothing happens. I'm at a complete loss. I reset the profile and tried to bind again no luck.

I'm confused about how you would bind a Wallkera TX to a FrSky rx. Is there some compatibility here I don't know about ?
@RunesLegacy

Yes it has deviation and frsky module modification.
@DanielSingerX

the exact thing happened to me! funny thing is I was using a radio that has the same deviation software.. I was also setting up things in betaflight when it just stopped working with the 2 dim lights

I ended up returning the receiver, the new one has been working fine ever since. Flashing the old one did not solve the issue, in fact it wouldn't flash.

Question..why does the power leads need to be swopped?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten Год назад
You need to swap them to match the pin order on the module bay on the Taranis. Later models may use a smart port connector underneath where (I think) the ordering doesn't need to be messed around with

@michaelnoardo3315
@michaelnoardo3315 7 лет назад
what if I dont have a Taranis? I'm using a Turnigy 9x with DJT Module
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
The question of flashing is a good one, the 9x can run OpenTX, so you might presume it could flash a receiver, but I don't know. This is going to be a moot point in your setup though, as the XM+ runs in D16 mode, which means that a DJT module won't support it (you need an XJT module instead)
@michaelnoardo3315

Thanks, I will get rid of my Flysky I6s and my Turnigy 9x and get a Taranis , Do you know if I can get the same result with an Taranis QX7?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Yes the QX7 is basically a Taranis X9D with a slight lower res screen, no sliders, and two less 3 position switches. It is however, much nicer to hold and has a rotary dial which makes configuring things much better (that the X9D's arrow buttons)

How you do it with the jumper T8SG V2 plus?
@CurryKitten

The T8SG runs Devention doesn't it? I don't think you can flash from it (but I'm no expert on this) you might have to buy the adapter to allow you to flash from your pc if not

In a word no - you'd have to reflash them. Stick the radio in LBT mode and see if they bind, that would be one way of being able to check

@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад

@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
*Goes off to google freeX mcFx O-1* Hmm ok, and does it just tip over when you try and take off as per your video ? First off, see if you can go down a PayPal dispute with GearBest - if you can do that, no messing about. I'm not sure a generic quad repair centre exists (perhaps a gap in the market), unless you do have something expensive and behind a very big international company like DJI then you are going the hobbyist route where you figure it out and fix it. Good news - is some of these components are generic. Brushless motors, escs - easy to look at. A proprietary flight controller, less so. My first quest would be "does it work in non-gps mode", followed by redoing the compass calibration, and then plugging it in the computer and looking at the gyro and accelerometer read out to see if it moves as it should and then stays put when it's still. Is your lipo definitely charged up ok ? Seeking help from a community will move you along faster - if you have a few basic tools: screw drivers, multi meter, soldering iron, then join a forum, explain issue - what you've tried so far etc

On frsky xm+ download which firmware will i use for rssi? The top 16channel rssi? Whats the 3 others below LBT mode?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 лет назад
Normally yes - the latest firmware (version 170313) has the code in for the FCC (international version) and LBT (EU Version) versions with RSSI on channel 8 or channel 16 (the firmware that doesn't list RSSI is the default normal 16 channel). If you hit any issues try the previous level of firmware (version 161221) I need to do some more testing to check it, but I seemed to have issuers on a few receviers on the latest firmware, where the previous level was fine... but the latst is usually fine.
