Part 2 of my ongoing analysis of Twin Peaks! This part of the analysis covers the existentialist and feminist themes in Twin Peaks, and how its approach to portraying gender fits within the context of Lynch's career. Twin Peaks serves as a turning point towards a more feminine-centric perspective in Lynch's original works, and this video covers how the original Twin Peaks series continues feminist themes from Blue Velvet while humanizing women much more than Lynch's previous original works.
This analysis of Twin Peaks is part of an ongoing series on the original works of David Lynch. If you'd like to support these videos and many more like it, please consider becoming a patron!

22:27 the big scene with Denise in The Return included the absolutely famous line, "i told [them] to fix their hearts or die", which many seem to have taken as one of Lynch's overarching statements in his work. Become better or become another unwilling agent of chaos in this life. Powerful stuff.

I started re-watching Twin Peaks with a friend from another city recently who's never seen it before, screen sharing over Discord. We're up to episode 9. We've been discussing each episode after watching them and I think we'll definitely watch this when we're done with the series :)

just found your channel and am absolutely in love with all of your work. I discovered twin peaks at 14, living in a place that, to me, felt so similar to what the show was saying - you put it into words so eloquently. watching this is like therapy lmao. anyways, thank you millions and keep it up!!!

I have always been fascinated with the idea of existentialism but never realized that it could be a theme in this show, the ambiguity in TP never fails to amaze me.

Great video series. My only issue is that at times is the audio you cut yourself off at times and there are needed pauses between ideas removed/missing.

I know Twin Peaks has a butt-ton of characters and I don't blame you for skipping over my favorite good-dude on the show, Major Briggs. Sort of a counterpart to the Log Lady insofar as he also has "secret knowledge". I do like how he treats her with immediate respect and honesty even though many do not. His relationship with his family seems very healthy and he goes to great lengths to empathize with his son. His one transgression maybe giving Bobby a smack in an early episode. Let's be fair, Bobby is fairly smackable at times and that was before the character's direction was established. Not only does he seem unafraid to share feelings, he often does so with a wonderful eloquence. That dream he shared with Bobby was beautiful and mesmerizing. A deep trust in his son's good nature, regardless of his current behavior. Much credit to the writers and the late, great Don S. Davis. Even when he withholds information as "classified" he says it more like he is honor bound than the "You don't need to know" shtick we often get from military characters. He is willing to share classified info when it can save lives and questions classification entirely when he comes across profound, fundamental truths. Betty Briggs seems on the same page as him regarding the nature of his work, not because of any forced obligation but because they have a deep trust of each other. "Achievement is it's own award, pride obscures it" is a wonderful example of how he differs from other characters of his type. He is big on love and that's awesome... Fishing and toasting marshmallows, also awesome. I think Don S. Davis really nailed it. Like too many other great artists from the show it saddens me they aren't around to continue their magic. How great is it that he had the forethought to grow a perfectly ovoid head that I must say looks rather smashing floating around surreal settings. Good guy all around.

@@MalmroseProjects Totally understandable. Not at all meant as a criticism. I'd say you are knocking it outta the park even when not considering time restrictions. To be honest I am pretty new to Twin Peaks despite being old n' grey. I finally binged the whole collection around 4 times in this month but my viewpoints are still in their infancy. After my initial viewing I started scouring internet-land for other people's analysis and thoughts, along with that delicious trivia. Your series is one of my favorite so far and I look forward to more. New to Lynch in general, save for seeing Dune back in the 80's, I am kicking myself for missing out so long. I am also glad I have such a relatively complete collection to enjoy for the first time. I watched Blue Velvet for the first time a couple days ago, then watched your vid. Eraserhead as well and I have much more to go. I find Lynch doesn't so much provide "Rabbit Holes". Certainly they are there but I think it's more about providing the right "soil" to dig one's own rabbit hole ("dig" both literally regarding my clumsy metaphor and colloquially). Even though I am new to it, I sense that his work is an invitation to dig - not just my own rabbit hole - but a winding warren that interweaves with not just the creators but the many other people who enjoy it. I do dig that sort of art.

@@smartass0124 Her, not his. And please, look at rates of domestic abuse, systematic silencing and disempowerment of women in the work place and the very fact that when a woman is elected to an official function, it goes on the news since it really stands out against the huge numbers of male representatives discussing laws from their male perspective. Throw up the red pill.

I think you're missing that Nadine letting Ed get with Norma in the return seems to be an unrealistic fantasy that immediately gets erased by the blue rose time travel stuff, but it is beautiful while it lasts. I think of it as more beautiful version of the "you want me? You can't have me" moment in lost highway, or how the love scene in Mulholland drive precedes the dream breaking down. Otherwise you're doing the best work on lynch on RU-vid! Todd McGowan's book on lynch is a great psychoanalytic analysis of the role of fantasy in lynch's oeuvre
@MalmroseProjects

i see what you mean, but i'm not focusing as much on canon. a big theme with lynch is the importance of good times and moments even when faced with existential uncertainty (cooper's optimism, betty and rita in mulholland drive, etc) and i see ed and norma's love story as fitting into that theme. the ending of The Return i see as being largely about laura and dale, and ed and norma's story being more incidental. i wouldn't call it an "unrealistic fantasy" and more a deserved payoff for a lifetime of goodness within the two characters. for me the difference with something like Lost Highway is we see the fantasy "turn sour" so to speak. we watch the tone of the scene shift as pete's fantasy comes crashing down on him (like jeffrey in blue velvet, betty in mulholland drive, and eventually dale and Diane at the end of The Return) for me the difference is the immediate shift. episode 18 is where Dale's story ends, norma and ed's story ends with the happy ending we see, imo. at the end of this twin peaks video (part 4) i'll discuss the weird canon of the original series and hopefully that'll help make sense of some of what i mean.

@MalmroseProjects

because this isn't meant to be a series, it was one video that had to be split into 4 parts. the actual sections of th video are intro, part 1-8 or so. the first video featured the intro and parts 1 and 2. this video covers part 3 and 4, etc

You’re clearly a smart cookie but I think these videos are too theory-heavy. Remember the old adage “show, don’t tell”? I think your videos do too much telling and not enough showing. I think you could’ve made a more persuasive - and entertaining - argument by showing more clips of the series to evidence the points you make, rather than just telling us it is so.

i dont like to do that because the copyright bots would add whole days of extra work to each video. i would never put out any videos if i had to add that much extra work to each video i make

I think this is too forced. I can see Frost being steeped in feminist theory, but not Lynch, thank goodness.

I don't think he's steeped in feminist theory, but the show is definitely about violence against women to an extent.
@Silhouetters

considering Lynch has created feminist films, funded feminist productions and has endorsed women throughout his career, what you said is incredibly arrogant and certainly misinformed. Either stop being deluded and grow up, or stop watching his films if you don't agree that women should be emancipated from sexism :)

@@Silhouetters I have endorsed women throughout my life. But I think feminism is the most dangerous ideology on earth. Communism can destroy the country but mostly the people will survive. Feminism leads to extinction. I have got sexism throughout my life from women, from the media, from everywhere. Feminism is satanism in a flower dress. And it's pretty obvious from just looking at the main players. We should absolutely stop using words like sexism and racism. Instead we should use a little more words to describe whatever the issue is what we want to talk about, then perhaps we can actually have some discussion. The sexes are different, hugely different, have totally different kind of natural powers, and just acknowledging this is called sexism by so many. That's effing ridiculous, and it's destroying the west. Most western countries are going extinct really really fast, or at least the white native races ( and I know about the history of USA so I don't need a lecture about that).

Lynch basically had most control over Fire walk with me, wich is one of the most feminist pieces of media to ever gloss the screen. You're just a misogynist who cannot handle that a director you like has been advocating women for decades.
