About 30 yrs ago, my cousin dropped one of those setups on a 383 he had in a Dart. I watched him run it up and down the Alley, of all places, as he was complaining it wasn't using all 8 throats. I shook my my head, and discovered that one of the carbs had the Idle Mixture screws completely shut, and the linkage between the carbs was way out. Eventually he just used a Single 4bbl and was much happier

I was on a chat line the other day. A guy on there wanted to swap his modified Edelbrock carb for a stock Edelbrock carb. He said the guy he got his carb from had modified it and it was running rich. I told him about the Edelbrock kit you can buy at the local Advance Auto Parts, Summit Racing or Jegs. Who knows if he believes me, I told him they are easy carbs to change the metering on. Don't have to drain the gas to change the metering rods or springs. I have had some luck right out of the box also. I put an Edelbrock Performer and Edelbrock 650 Carb with an electric choke on a Dodge Truck with a 318. He said the cold start stumble stopped and it idled so well that with the stock muffler he sometimes tried to start the truck when the engine was already running. He was happy that on cold days he could just hop into the truck, start it up and go with out sitting for a couple of minutes until it warmed up.

I always had SBC or BBC in my cars, but seeing how easy changing an intake is on a Mopar big block makes me wish I could go back in time and gone to the DARK (Mopar) side. I use to dread putting distributor back in if I was alone, so much easier with two people. But Mopar's look so much easier to work on, and similar power too. Another great teaching video from Nick!!!

Chrysler engineers of that era understood manifolds. The long cross rams with the carbs on the fender liners were done for torque not so much horsepower. Was designed to give heavy cars like Chrysler 300 letter cars better acceleration. When they started putting the big block in the lighter Dodge and Plymouth models for drag racing with the Max wedge in 62 they went to the short ram for better top end performance.
@loboheeler
@loboheeler 2 года назад
Yep, the long cross ram intake was designed for mid-range torque. Friend of mine had a 1962(?) Dodge Polara with that 413 version. It would push you back in the seat with a 60 MPH full throttle kickdown.

Back in the day I had a 4-speed 70 Hemi Cuda and I ran two Carter 750 cfm competition series carbs most of the time wile on the street. The motor had Cylinder Head Service modified heads, roller cam, and12.5 compression. It was an old SS/D motor that was run in a SS car out of Ohio. I used a stock intake for the street that had been extrude-a-honed and the car ran strong with no breakage besides valve springs from time to time. Love the videos Nick keep it up.

That intake manifold was first used on the 1958 350 cu. in. Fury. It’s funny that the 350 turned into the 383, and eventually the 400, and not a BowTie to be seen.

Best thing is that they are the same stroke and the 383had a Forged crank that was pilot bearing ready to go in the 400s big bore to really handle the RPM, but of course a stroker kit makes that point moot and it being a short deck saves weight and room also a very strong block

A lot of people don’t realize is that Chrysler was a engineering powerhouse. They did a lot of engineering during WW2 for tanks and bomber aircraft. It’s my opinion they took all that knowledge learned, looked around and put to good use in producing performance engines and cars in the 50’s and 60’s.

@@chriscatarcio2983 : Chris: Of course they do, BUT even NA cars now exceed the old "glorious" stuff. Two small examples. 392 gen III V8 with a..mere 485 HP (versus SC stuff now) exceeds the legendary 426 Hemi in stock "street" tune. Casual daily drive, 12 second car..stock at 4400 lbs in either Charger or Challenger. Should I even discuss 5.0 Ford Coyote V8? NOT dissing old cars, I was..baptized in a Ram Air III 67' GTO with open Hooker headers, sideways choking on tire smoke..wondering how the driver could..see where we we going. Another satisfying Dyno video Nick and George! That Carter "Strip Kit" takes me back. I had a 1978 Dodge Magnum that I swapped a smog 400 for a fresh 440 that had lots of goodies in it. Atop the stock HP intake manifold was a Carter Thermoquad. I used the strip kit to change jets and metering rods til I got the perfect seat of the pants launch from the 8-3/4 posi rear end. No Dyno back then. It ran well and the Thermoquad had the phenolic base that kept the fuel cooler on hot days. No thermal lock ups.

I used the same intake in a mild "Christine clone" build up based on a 400 block. Nothing special there, 440 source heads homeported, comp 21-227-4 cam with factory rockers and 1 3/4" primary hedman headers with 3" exhaust and mufflers. The intake was modified some, it was opened under the carbs cutting the four hole portion out and curved to the ports, making the plenum a bit higher. And then tapered four hole 1/2" plywood spacers were used under the carbs. It surprised me, making the best power of similar build ups I have done with that cam and with different intake manifolds, RPM, Torker2 etc. Close to 540 hp.

Exactly what I was thinking. You won't tell 30hp on the street when you're at that level, lose traction at 450lbs of torque or whatever so the rest means nothing. At a dragstrip 30hp might be 3 tenths...if you're bracket racing who cares! Cool factor x 10! (and I'm a ford guy who ran a f-28 2x4 intake with carters on a 302)

@jimjungle1397

Originally Edelbrock made them for the 440, but not for the 383. With the stroker kits becoming popular, there was a demand for a low block version. Edelbrock claims the low block Performer RPM has improvements over the 440 version, because they had learned more about the intakes by the time they came out with the low block version.

This particular intake Nick was designed to compensate for the fact that at the time there were no large CFM 4bbl carbs yet. The only easy way to get around the problem back then was to run 2x 4bbs. IIRC this intake was set up to run 2x WCFBs. The adapter plates on the intake point to that. Tuning dual quads for the street with a dual plane dual quad intake is a bit of a dark art these days but they can be made to work. Really what I feel you need to get them to work is a single plane dual quad intake of modern design. A pair of those Edelbrock Thunder carbs are actually better than true Carter AVS carbs were and certainly more adaptable than the Carter/Edelbrock AFB for dual quad. Over a single 4bbl the effort to get the dual quad to similar power is high and the rewards probably not worth the effort for most. On a 440 I got excellent results from a dual quad Edelbrock CH-28 intake with AFBs but it took a lot of mucking around and it only made maybe 8hp more than an 850DP, a well modded Thermoquad on two single quad intakes ie a Torker II intake and a M1 single plane. The TQ on the Torker was fantastic combo. It was just so simple and easy with little effort to get power from the TQ but I digress. Back to my dual quad adventure, to me it was well worth the effort but ideally as mentioned, you need a single plane dual quad like you can now buy for a Gen 2 Hemi from Edelbrock but none is made for the Wedge. I did get a bit more power with a dual quad dual plane intake with 2x 500 CFM Edelbrock AFBs but I wouldn't recommend it unless you like a challenge - which I do. I really learnt the limitations of the AFB style for dual quad and at the time wanted something like a hybrid of a TQ and and AVS. The Edelbrock Thunder wasn't born yet at that time and it is indeed the hybrid design you need for dual quad tuning ease. I found for my setup opening the primaries together worked really well but I tuned it for that after much trial and error with the staged arrangement. Fuel economy was still acceptable when it was all properly set up that way. Re low deck dual quad intakes, unfortunately except for the rare Edelbrock cross ram there isn't much in the performance stakes for the low deck dual quad aficionado these days. Part of the dual quad tuning is recognizing Venturi vacuum at WOT is halved over 8 barrels vs 4. There are two philosophies and both seem to work. One way is 2x small carbs because it pulls a stronger vac signal thereby compensating for the Venturi vacuum drop over a single 4bbl, the other is 2x large carbs with big jets to compensate for the reduced Venturi vacuum signal over a single 4bbl.

Great test . I agree, I would go with the high rise and the 750 Holley. It even looks better. Back in the 1970s that was the setup you would have,if you could afford it.

I'd like to see what the high rise would do with something like a 1050 dominator on it. 750 feels a little small for this engine, in my opinion.

Had an original offy dual 4 barrel spread bore intake for a b engine from the 70's that was never on an engine. Put 2 thermoquads on it but never did get to put it on an engine. Some guy gave me a offer o couldn't refuse for it. Still kicking myself

It might sound strange to some but sometimes it's about the "Coolness" factor instead of getting every last HP out of an engine. You have to admit that dual quad set up sitting in the car looks "Cool"!!

Nick, I love the show! this show especially! I remember those old manifolds when I was a kid, that was "Christine's" intake and they weren't portmatched very well. Compared to just a few years later. Used a 9inch aubor to clean out the rough stuff from the intake to get 30 or 40 horsepower just by port matching them correctly

Goooood EVENING!!!! Ha, there’s a switch for ya!!!! 😀 Great video, Nick and George!!!! It is interesting that the dual quad manifold didn’t lose THAT much performance: I was thinking it probably has slightly smaller passages, therefore mixture velocity is a little higher, and having two carbs sorta takes advantage of that. Anyway, it’s a little different with the start time, but, as I said before, that’s the ONLY difference, cuz the content is fantastic as always!!!!! Keep up the excellence, guys!!!!

I believe you said the 2x4 bbl manifold was a single plane, and it is low profile. My understanding was single plane manifolds are best for hi-rpm performance as opposed to the dual plane which is more for street use. The Performer RPM manifold is light years ahead in design so it is better all around. The Desoto Adventurer cars were the top line Desotos and they always had hi-po engines and the 1959 Adventurer had a 350hp 383 with the 2x4 bbl set up. I have photos.

Yes, that dual 4 has very very short runners, which makes for top end HP or at the very least extended RPM range.

What a great example of a tamed 451 stroker! That 451 really forces some pump through that intake ! 500hp and 534 tq! Without even trying. Makes a great daily driver with confused looks on faces with the hood up. I just think it looks really cool with the stock dual quad setup and i think hey thats a 420 hp 450tq 383 when i look at it, then prepare to be surprised at its performance, it'll always have an edge with those 451 cubes going. Great strong artistic statement this is.

I'm with you. Get a Mopar BB, and put on a set of the original, original long ram pipe manifolds. And going one step further, they had a set with small plenums and then 28" runners, and then came out (for the Chrysler 300s) a somewhat different ram setup where they extended the plenum by 13" and the individual ram tubes were only 15" long. I remember that the rams with the 15" individual runners were rated 405 hp on the 413s of the day.
@Mr39036ce

The shorter ram 405 hp motor was only available in the Chrysler 300 letter car. Not sure of the exact one. Not in Dodge or Plymouths.
