Twisting Up EVO Trailing Arms on the Rocks to Test for Flex and Check our Antirock Swaybar Fix

EVO Trailing Arms on a Jeep Gladiator offer a crazy amount of vertical travel and enough so to make it a challenge to work with off the shelf aftermarket parts, like the RockJock 4x4 Antirock system that we installed and showed in our previous video. Fortunately, we were able to find a fix for it and that's what you'll get to see now, along with some of the big flex testing we did, out on the rocks and to verify as much.

42” tires are big and hard to clear!! You’ve got some insanely tight clearances and looks like you’ve still got travel to go both front and rear which will cause rubbing. A bit of rubbing never hurt anybody though. That gladiator is just insane man. Insane. That’s a dream build right there. One hell of a machine. Couldn’t be more jealous if it! Lol

This is an incredible build. I’ve watched your videos for years and am grateful for the information you’ve disseminated to all of us. That inspiration and influence is reflected in how I’ve built up my JLU. I guess my question in regards to the problems you are working through in this video, where you guys sponsored to run the UD60’s on this truck? Was it a choice more based on availability and the schedule of your build? Seems like with your previous experience with the 72.5” WMS Dynatracs in one of your other trucks, that that or something similar to that would’ve been a better suited choice in this particular application. I know the custom axle world has and continues to experience major delays and long lead times. Not a criticism, just a genuine curiosity. Thank you for the good content and I look forward to continuing to learn through your experiences.
@wayalife
@wayalife Год назад
Without question, Dynatrac makes great axles and the original owner is a personal friend of mine. You really can't go wrong with their axles but they are expensive and you are out to wait 6 months or more to get one. We also have friends at Dana (I should note, even Dynatrac is friends with Dana) and we simply decided to test out their UD60's because they are more affordable and readily available. We literally were able to get a set in less than a week back when we started this build. That said, we have been happy with them and for the most part, they've been holding up well. Be sure to check our our next video as you might find it interesting.

@wayalife

You can believe that if you want but so far, we have not seen it to be the case. Of course, we just flexed this Jeep out to show that it still could but it's primary purpose is to bomb across the desert and in a way that most Jeeps could never hope to. We have other Jeeps that are made to flex.

The Antirock has always been wizard shit to me. Like, how the hell does something that looks like a swaybar allow for so much more articulation than the actual swaybar itself 😭😭 Absolutely love the Gladiator build. Thing is nearly perfect but I suspect you’ll end up adding a few cylinders and then it’ll be endgame 🤌🏼
@wayalife
@wayalife Год назад
To be fair, the Antirock does NOT allow for more articulation or at least, when compared to being disconnected. As I explain in the video, we purposefully installed them to help provide more stability when bombing across the desert and to also offer MORE resistance - to help LIMIT the amount of articulation so that we don't tear our rig apart when flexing on the rocks. And yes, a few more cylinders under the hood is in the works 😁
@Escape.Idiocracy
@Escape.Idiocracy Год назад
I am really surprised that the nylocks work out for you. I switched everything over to height temp national aircraft grade lock nuts. Nylocks provide 5 times use on and off to full torque spec. NA-HT locknuts offer 50 on-off cycles before reaching spec becomes an issue. Might check these out on your moving pieces… (anything that gets hot from movement.)
@wayalife
@wayalife Год назад
The nylocks are what came with the kit and so I used them. And, so far, they've been holding up but I'm with you on this. I typically like to run stovers/pinch nuts for the same reason.

@@wayalife thank you for the feedback! What letter would that be on the tire sidewall rating?
@wayalife

Different ratings are offered on different sizes and some will have multiple options. I personally prefer a C rating for daily driving as it will offer a softer ride and make sure to run a size that comes in it.
@miniwolverine6227
@miniwolverine6227 Год назад
Wouldn’t you want your air bumps stuffed at max articulation? Like before body damage?
@wayalife
@wayalife Год назад
No, the air bumps are installed and set to help absorb the impact from a full vertical hit. As in, from over really big bumps at crazy fast speeds and they still do that well. As you can see in the video, the tires are clearing the fenders and NOT damaging the body at a full twisted up flex and just from the Antirocks. Without the Antirocks, we were tearing off our fenders at a full flex.

Why not just bump it out day one? Needs more bump if you're tearing parts off with the tires.
@wayalife
@wayalife Год назад
It is bumped out for speed and big vertical travel. That's the main purpose of this build - to make it into a bomb across the desert rig. This flexing on the rocks is just trying to show that it can be done too. The bit of rubbing we're still seeing can easily be addressed.
@Sniperssx
@Sniperssx Год назад

Good video but aren’t bump stops supposed to maximize movement and protect components? $2000 in bumps that don’t stop anything? The sway bars will wear with time and you’ll have damage when tire hits shocks etc
@wayalife
@wayalife Год назад
Everything about this build has been about bombing across the desert at stupid fast speeds. The air bumps were installed and set to soak up a full vertical hit and they still do. People seemed skeptical about it's ability to flex on the rocks and I think we've put that to bed with this video. If you pay attention to what I say in the video, you'll hear me say that our axle isn't centered and that's why there's rubbing only on one side. You'll also hear me state that recentering AND wheel spacers may be needed to address the rubbing.
@kevinellis5327
@kevinellis5327 Год назад
Are you going to just do wider spacers on the rear or all the way around ? Have you considered steel fender flares ? Also one of the things I love about my lift is it is amazing on and off road … do you lose any of that with the anti rock set up ? Love your test area btw !!!
@wayalife
@wayalife Год назад
We'll most likely run spacers all the way around. Not a fan of steel fenders and mainly because I have personally seen where hits to them on the trail cause body damage. Factory plastic fenders just fold or tear off. We are purposefully running a rear Antirock with a much higher torsion rate. This is to help stability when driving hard and fast off road. On road, handling is even better. Flex on the rocks is somewhat limited but it is what we were looking for being that we're running 42's and keeping them from tearing things off had been a challenge.
@Original_SJB

why are you locking hubs manually when a rubicon has that switch to lock front and rear, or rear covered?

Because this Jeep was built first and foremost to go fast across the desert. Rock crawling is a distant second but I think that this video shows it can still do that too and extremely well and WITHOUT having to limit anything. Who cares if the bumps don't get used when flexing when the Antirocks make them totally unnecessary.

As you may not have heard me say it in the video, we purposefully installed Antirocks to help "limit" the amount of flex we have. Antirocks are great at providing stability while still offering a good amount of articulation but it'll never be as good as being disconnected. Stability is what we were wanting for when we bomb across the desert AND it helps to prevent us tearing things apart at a full stuff.

@wayalife I understand that. I have a evo high clearance with 14 " long arms and my fronts right now are measuring over 10" I'm just trying to make sure who installed the did so correctly. I tried reading the instructions. And think they say to measure them at 7 in for 4 in lift wanted to get your opinion on this
