I don’t know Rene. I think you are blowing this out of proportion. News outlets should pay if they are using this service to propagate their own ideas and want the exclusive perks of a blue check mark. Anyone can still use Twitter if they so choose to without paying. They just don’t get all the additional features as has always been the case.

Operated the same way Steve Jobs did back then when he used a hatchet to pull Apple from bankruptcy by getting rid of useless people from the company. Both believed in hard work, both have very high standards for their workers and both brought their companies to new height. Wonder how they did it with a hatchet though. I believe the opposite. Pay walling for the blue check is a smart move. Do I need one ? No, does my business need one ? Yes. Will my business pay for it ? Yes. Will it bring sustainability ? Absolutely ! Twitter is NOT RU-vid where content is produced by creators. It is a social platform.

@@bledig it is considered free because now everyone has access to the blue check mark and it’s extra features. This used to be a random situation where it was never a given you could use all the extra filters and features that blue checks received by being verified. Now anyone can enjoy the exclusive club. Why shouldn’t Twitter be profitable? It is a really bad thing for any company to solely rely on flaky advertisers. It is no different then linkIn charging for their pro memberships for those who use it for their recruiting and insight into trends within an industry. As long as more and more features are added, I think it makes more sense to keep this as a subscription as the company was too bloated and relied on funding from ads and investors too much.

Orwellian is when Twitter’s Vijaya Gadde was holding monthly meetings with the Biden Administration on whom to censor in order to promote the government’s preferred narratives. Firing people like Gadde was the first step to freeing Twitter to be non-partisan. Free speech is one of the hallmarks of America, embodied in the First Amendment. There’s a reason it was #1. When government is collaborating with social media to promote their narrative and only theirs, that is the very thing George Orwell was referring to. When government defines what misinformation/disinformation is, we are all in trouble. Today’s misinformation seems to almost always turn out to be tomorrow’s truth. The best way to handle that is to let everyone speak. Filtering should be your responsibility. Elon wants to let you set filters on what you want to see, not letting Joe Biden do it.

I think the real solutions he should working for is saving his failing marriage and his relationship with his kids, instead spending half his day jerking away to twitter. Rene, I enjoy your content normally - but you're being entirely unclear. I have no idea what you're trying to say. It's like you're trying to remain passionately impartial but the result is just mud. Probably the clearest thing I got is that you don't think paid verification is the solution that Elon et al thinks it is, and is a conflation of actual free-speech. I might be inclined to agree with you on that point - but beyond this I have no idea what 'helpful' commentary you're attempting to bring to the table. Further, I personally don't everyone's reactions. Even if it's coming from the horse's mouth - nothing at this point in terms of the service is set in stone. Nothing has been implemented - and all this 'mind-reading' and 'motivation' interpretation on all sides is just tiresome.
