The Gap is a window into different lives and different generations.
Two people, of vastly different ages, discuss a shared experience that impacted their lives, how it affected them and how they dealt with it to ultimately emerge stronger.
In this episode of The Gap, Russell Kerman, 48, a recovering alcoholic sits down with Thomas Delaney, a former drug addict, to talk about their experiences with addiction. Through their conversation we learn about the way in how substance abuse affect their lives, and how they got themselves on the road to recovery.

Hooked on many drugs since 14. Now, at 21, I feel like I’ve lived a lifetime due to loss of friends, while losing & finding myself over and over. I always wonder, why did I do this to myself? I can see myself finding a way out and becoming successful, but at the same time I don’t see myself living past 30. I’m broken and trying to find the pieces. If you’re out there and relate, you’ve got a friend in me. Take care of yourselves y’all

quick question: I have been struggeling with a similar thing for not as long though i am 22 now. after I lost a close friend i decided to get clean by myself stopped snorting lines (which was mainly my poison, though every other high would do in a pinch) and been clean for almost 2 years now. yet i still drink occasionally. mostly socially but in the last months more and more to numb pain. and i know that everyone says this but i do have my drinking somewhat under control. My question now is "Am i a fraud?" That all being said the " you have a friend in me" thing goes both ways no one ever should struggle like this.

@@QuixoticCowboy and 789 I recommend seeking professional help. The things you try to forget, the pain you try to push away ... they will come back and they will grow stronger. I had to learn that lesson the hard way before finally going into rehab and work on my mental health with a therapist. I pushed away my friends, lost my job, ruined my health, wasted years of my life and saw no escape from all the shit I covered myself in thanks to alcohol. I learned that it's possible to fail but it's never to late to try and change your life. During my therapy I got to know young people trying to recover to finish education, fathers and mothers wanting to be there for their children and even grand parents wanting to return to a normal life so they could enjoy their grand children growing up.

I was 15 when I started using heroin. I’d always been a straight kid and I think back and I don’t know how I got to where I was. It was such a sudden change going from this happy teen to someone who couldn’t go 2 hours without heroin. My lowest point was when I kept pushing the limits just hoping I’d Od. The drug became the only thing important in my life, I didn’t care about anyone or anything. One night I snuck out (something I’d never done) and stole my parents car, my of all people drug dealer saw what I’d become and told me that I was a good kid who had a lot of life left a life without drugs. Luckily I had wonderful parents who moved us out of state for me, it was their relentless effort to save me that ultimately led me to give it all up. I quit in 2017 and still think about it a lot but at least I’m clean, and thankfully alive.

That line "why dont you deserve to be happy" hit the nail so damn well. Ive been in the deep end for a while now, with constant thoughts and reminders of why I feel I shouldnt be happy. Dont be fucking stupid..AA was the first..GIN destroyed london in the early 18th century..there were laws passed every few years to try and contain it...the basic tenants of a religion of a billion people outlaws its use?? Alcohol was made completely illegal in the US in the 30s. Society knows how dangerous it is but it's too late, prohibition doesn't work with any drug but alcohol generates to much revenue to be banned again
@frbird51
@frbird51 3 года назад
It's strange to me that most of society is just fine with people drinking in social settings like parties or having a couple of drinks along with dinner at a restaurant but when someone drinks "too much" they're suddenly a pariah. In most circles it's not acceptable to take other addictive drugs openly at every social event you attend yet drinking alcohol at these events is just considered part of the routine. I understand that a normal, healthy individual is expected to have enough self control to not overindulge in alcohol but a person's tolerance and propensity to become addicted to any substance varies significantly from one person to the next.

My fiance is also an alcoholic which i think makes the process so much harder for us we encourage our bad habits and while i've tried to seek treatment in a rehab i don't wish to do so without them doing so as well because i would have that temptation constantly once i'd get back. You just need to remember that its not the substances that brought you down, it was yourself. Plenty of people can flirt with drugs and alcohol their entire life, and never let it truly take hold. We're all different and some people are more prone to becoming an addict than others. Its why gambling can be just as destructive as heroin, its the person, not the substance.

I've been in recovery from my addiction to opiates for almost 20 years (Sept. 11, 2001 is my "anniversary"). It's really nice to see these guys talking & sharing their stories with each other, & the rest of us. Even if just one addict goes for help after hearing their stories, it's such a blessing. Many addicts will talk about their addiction, but sometimes they're just trading "war stories" rather than really sharing their stories. Rehashing the times you got so wasted or high on whatever substance isn't the idea. Really talking about the reasons behind your substance abuse, what it did to your relationships, & what you've done to fix it, is what needs to be shared. These guys really did a nice job of sharing with each other. I wish them all the best.
