DC dude here and know of Vic well. He could ball, but not totally convinced he was NBA material. His last year at GT he led the Big East in scoring, but it was the ugliest 23 a game I've ever seen with a horrible shooting percentage. I did think he would get drafted and given a shot, but not sure if he would've stuck. And Vic was on much harder stuff than weed and drink.

I was a gtown fan but your right I don't think he was good enough to start but he could of came off the bench in the nba if he tried but was more of a slasher and a guy who could run the floor and play D. Not a shooter by any streach.

Vic was on them dippers, that good ol' PCP(for those not from the district)... Like a lot of dudes from around Parkchester, the Farms, and all up and down s.e, and the whole city, dippers were the drug of choice. Don't know about now but until I left the district in 08', dippers were the drug of choice... Main man couldn't get out of his own way, he lucky to still be alive after getting ambushed around Parkchester in 03' and losing his eye.. I think he had an undiagnosed mental illness that became more pronounced as he got older, that's how most mental illnesses are, the drugs are just a symptom and not a cause of the erratic behavior..

I was going to work out when this guy came to mind and after looking at this from Stunted Growth, I realized that the people of Barry Farm Dwellings, Late Coach John Thompson, and his upbringing from his family failed him. I know that a lot of people may think the people i just mentioned was not responsible but when you read what I am saying maybe you will agree. I only heard about BFD and from the people that came from there and got out they mentioned to me that the people showed him love but didn't love him enough to grab him around the collar and say, "Hey man, WTF are you doing? You wanna be like us and all you will have is these projects, drugs, and either jail or death?" Get your s**t together because WE are not going to let you fall victim to the streets like we did. The city of DC tried and that was great but the village of BFD should have been ahead of the curve. Secondly the late and Great John Thompson, Jr. I know that he wanted to keep talent from the DMV in the DMV especially the inner city kids but one thing I realized as a coach is that you really have to look out for the best option for a kid that has come from a rough and tough upbringing and for Victor Page he needed to be FAR AWAY from DC. That's why the UCLA, USC, Arizona, or better yet Cincinnati (Huggins when he coached there) would have been the best option for him. However the business of college basketball and trying to get the best talent available to win NCAA championships were more important that the best option for him. Coach Thompson had a gift and understanding with A.I. and although Iverson got into situations he eventually got the message from Coach Thompson but with Page you left the sheep in the same wilderness with hungry wolves and it was not the best move. Think about it? He did great while he was playing in the CBA for the Sky Force because he was far away from DC and even after the season, some coach affiliated with the NBA should have said, "Yo Victor. come with me to Seattle (just saying) so we can get you involved with some in-season workouts with the team. Anything to keep him out of DC. Finally his upbringing living in a traumatic environment that eventually becomes apart of your everyday routine. He felt that it was the norm to sell drugs and carry a gun just as people go to work and use the Metro. I'm sure his family knew what he was doing but really looked at it as a way of life. No GUIDANCE. Now that he is older, he is in a time WARP aka Second Childhood (song by Nas) thinking that he can still hoop on the highest level. That is what made me almost cry because I lost friends to mental illness and being lost in a time warp and have no help from a psychiatrist to help him understand reality. One day I hope that someone will help him mentally so that he can get past what he has accomplished so that he will be able to either mentor youngsters or even write a book on his ups and downs and the importance of getting the help you need. RIP to Billy Knight (former UCLA player) gone to soon to mental illness. I'm rooting for Page to get the help he needs. Believe me I know what he is going through.

I agree but disagree with your point on John Thompson. As much trouble as he was getting into even before graduating, who says a UCLA or another other school wanted to touch him? “NO ONE” wanted to touch A. I with his situation in HS. Vic got his GED in Juvie, trust me UCLA wasn’t calling. John Thompson tried to give him and his other players that father figure away from home that they didn’t have. Did you ever think Georgetown may have been Vic only option. Steve Francis wanted to go to Georgetown but Thompson told him, “He needed to get out of DC”. If Page had the option I’m sure JT would have told him the same.
@pukysand
@pukysand Год назад
@@shermricks7340 I truly agree with what you're saying. I have always felt that when you are in an environment that is nothing but trouble or that you're comfortable with that only bad things can occur especially if you don't have people around you protecting you to make sure that you get out when you have a chance. I know that coach Thompson truly was looking out for the best interest of a lot of players and that location especially like Allen Iverson and as you said Steve Francis who wanted to play for him but he knew this TV had to get out of there. I felt that if he could have went somewhere and wish there was a father figure that would get it into him then he would be able to see an entirely different world instead of the one that he knew. When he played for Sioux falls in the CBA he was in a location that he can only focus on basketball and getting better. I'll truly hope that brother gets it together just for the rest of his life basketball is past him and hopefully he can be a motivational speaker on his life or even write a book like I did.

I don't think people outside of DC realize just what Victor Page had to deal with. I used to go to his neighborhood to buy weed in the 90's early 2000's. The entire neighboorhood is only about 5 streets and all 5 were drug strips. Not the typical drug strips you may think of but more like a scaled down version of the Amsterdam location from the Wire. Literally hundreds of people from all over in the streets just buying, selling, scamming and robbing. That was no place for people to actually to live man and most certainly no place to be soft. People from that area have maybe a 5% chance to make it in a professional enviornment. He was doomed from jump. Whats crazy is hoopers come to that spot to ball just to prove they were tough because of the reputation out there. They're in the process of knocking down the hood right now
@BLACK_MikeHammer
@BLACK_MikeHammer 2 года назад
That's that good ol Barry Farms/Parkchester, S.E zone... D.C's version of hell on earth, one of the most despair filled places in the dmv but I hung out around there back in the days, mid 2000's, even though i was from Sursum Cordas, North Capitol and 1st St, down bottom.. Many memories, from the southside, but too much tragedy, deceased peers from gun deaths, dudes and chicks who got strung out on PCP, crack and dudes doing football numbers in the feds... Vic I think had an undiagnosed mental illness and unaddressed behavioral issues, he'd been getting into trouble since HS... And with no proper family structure and support, it was almost like he didn't stand a chance

Most people don’t know this but Victor Page wasn’t going to the NBA. After A.I. Left early he was trying to be the man, but he just wasn’t. He became a volume shooter. He never really worked on all parts of his game. I believe he had the talent but never matured. Many people don’t know this but the next guy up at G-Town back then after A.I. Was a guy named Kenny Staton. He played in Northern VA for Wakefield High. He was the real next guy up. He never made it and it isn’t my place to say why or what issues he had or whatever may have been. Kenny Staton, was the next guy.

Hey DC is know different than Chi town, Oak town, NYC or Jersey when it comes to the streets. DC lost many great athletes. But my hometown had a rack of winners. That’s black America’s story. Some take heed. Some foul out.

Leave that man alone. You are just looking to make money off of him and his story. This story is fake news I know because he lived with me before this ever happened. Just like 100 other young black talented kids in the hood he got caught up.

Have you ever seen "100 other black kids" try to rape a 17 yr old in broad light for everyone to see? At some point skin color means nothing bro. This man was troubled and causing harm. His next step was murder... guaranteed. It's racist of you to try and defend him because he's black simply.

I went to numerous Skyforce games where Page played. He was a huge fan favorite, and the Coach at the time, Mo McHone, really kept him in line and out of trouble. Wanted to clarify: he didn’t chase a teammate with a broom. They were playing the Idaho Stampede on Christmas Day of 1997. He chased a Stampede player after a hard foul with the broom. The CBA suspended him ten games.

A Prime Vic & Prime A.I. in the Backcourt on that 76ers Team would’ve took that Famous Kobe & Shaq Lakers Team to a Game 7… Idc… I just think that Vic would’ve took the Matchup of Guarding Kobe Personal allowing A.I. to take Scoring Breathers( Rest ) that A.I. didn’t have at the time… Vic was so Influential on A.I. that He almost Sabotaged A.I.’s Career… Had A.I. for The Most part of His Career wanting to be a Thug that just so happens to Play in The NBA… He wanted Guys like Vic to know & Respect that He was still Chuck from The Streets. A.I. was stuck in that Thug mode so bad that The NBA had to change The Player Dress Code because They soon Noticed how Influential A.I. really was on The other Young Players.. Once A.I. started The Tattoos and Braids with Big Gold Chain Epidemic across The NBA the Big Corporate Heads had to make The Difficult Decision of “Waiting A.I.’s Talent out with Father Time” .. The moment A.I. got a step Slower or a Tad Bit Injury prone They was gonna get rid of Him cause now They had a Good Excuse … That’s why We had to see A.I. crying and Begging to come back because that’s Their Primary mission is to Humble Men .. And You can largely Trace A.I.’s Thug Phase Influence back to Vic and A.I.’s Entourage of Street Homies He used to keep with Him… Luckily A.I. had His Mother , Better Mental Health and a Better Overall Support System that what Vic had … And that was a Major Difference between The Two…💯
