Has your non-Catholic friend ever told you that it's unbiblical to go to a priest for confession? No doubt they quoted a couple of common verses to you to "prove" this and also told you that Jesus, alone is "our great high priest" (and that there are no ministerial priests in the New Testament). On and on the argument goes. But is this truly Biblical? To quote the non-Catholic's favorite verse, does it take into account "All Scripture"?
We'll be working through TEN Bible passages every Catholic needs to underline TODAY in your Bible, along with an indexing system that you can use in the blank pages of your Bible to help you stay on track.

Protestants always tell Catholic Christians “That’s not in the Bible.” From now on we should respond “It’s in the Bible!” One of my favorites is 2:Pet1:20, “First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation..” It’s in the Bible!

Always worth pointing out who Timothy was. Not a random person who just wondered in and got a Bible but a Bishop. Also in 1 Timothy 3:15 Saint Paul says the Church is the pillar and bulwark of the truth. Biggest problem with Sola Scriptura is who is doing the interpreting.

Another point which I'm sure Kenny has made before is that some translations use the English word 'tradition' when the passages refers to men's tradition but 'teaching' when used in something taught orally. My understanding is the Greek words are the same in both cases.

I don’t see the point of the not-yet-written New Testament books. Because protestants are not looking at when, whatever books, were written. They simple say all of scripture, is the sole authority for the Christian. John 16:12&13, says His Bride Church is Holy Ghost guided….the guidance per verse 13, which is, what Bridegroom is telling His Bride, which is what verse 12 is saying. Ask 10 protestants to define the church, and you will get 5 to 10 different answers. They say there is no authority of the church because there is no real body of people called the church, to the protestant mind. Allegedly they go by the Bible. Yet the Bible always says, the church in or the church at, a particular location. It’s never Susie‘s church here or Jimmy’s church there. It’s always, THE church in such & such location.

The Bible was canonized by the Catholic Church around 400 AD. Then, around 1800, the Protestants removed the seven books. So, if we assume that the 66 books are the proper canon, then for around 1800 years, there was no authority or reliable authority. Our understanding of the faith before the 1800 period is all questionable. And God waited 1800 years before He revealed the true and complete understanding of the Christian faith.
@Philip__325

@billlee2194
@billlee2194 Месяц назад
I'm not fully read on prophets but my understanding on bishops, and I believe the NT supports it, is that all the successors of the Apostles were called bishop. As I recall, the English words overseers and elders were used interchangeably in the NT but, over time, my understanding is the overseers were later called bishops and the elders came to be known as priest. I can't recall if 1 Clement uses the Greek word for bishop but, with Ignatius of Antioch in 107 AD, bishop, priest and deacon are household titles requiring absolute respect and authority. Ignatius instructs his hearers to follow the bishop as they would the Apostles. I did hear recently that the Church does consider that Revelation ended with the last Apostle. I also seem to recall prophets were mentioned in the Didache but some scholars believe that document could be from the 1st C.

Thanks Kenny! Please bear with me if I am a bit long in debunking sola scriptura which even the Bible itself does not teach. I hope you can read my whole posts [in 3 parts] as additional inputs for you and your viewers. Part 1 ✔ You said correctly that historically, no Bible existed in AD64-65 when Paul wrote to Timothy at Ephesus. The Bible officially came to existence only in AD382 (when Pope Damasus, Bishop of Rome, proclained the official canon of the Bible) and in AD397 when the council of Carthage promulgated the same official list of 72 books to combat the proliferations of pseudo-epigrapha or fake or un-inspired writing proliferating in those days. ✔ Moroveor, Paul and Timothy were both Jewish converts, and what Paul called πᾶσα γραφὴ (Pasa Graphe) = All (that is) written (2 Tim 3.15) was not the Bible we have today, but about the Hebrew Scripture called the Tanakh which they have in its Greek Septuagint version. So contextually, the πᾶσα γραφὴ (Pasa Graphe) = All (that is) written (2 Tim 3.15) was not pointing nor pertaining to the Bible that we know today. ✔ You also correctly pointed out that the word μόνος (mónos) was not in the text. But even if ONLY was used an adverb for the past-participle θεόπνευστος (Theo-pneustos) which literary means 'God-breathed' or dynamically rendered as 'inspired' - it still does not present or presuppose any authority on the Tanakh nor did the text present the Tanakh as a basis of authority. ✔ Moreover, Paul has absolutely no right to designate who was supposed to be the authority over his Church other than those under his jurisdiction as an ἐπίσκοπος (Episkopos or Bishop i.e. all the Episkopos (like Timothy) and πρεσβύτερος (Presbyteros or priests) and διάκονος (diakonos or deacons) whom he ordained under his ecclesiastical jurisdiction. ONLY JESUS CHRIST has this right to appoint the authority of very his Church being its founder.

@@KennyBurchard - Thanks! ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD! I hope you read also PARTS 2 AND 3 on separate posts. By the way, it was NOT 2Tim 3.16-17, NOT St Paul who declared the Bible as God-breathed or inspired but rather they were Pope Damasus (AD 382) and the Council of Carthage (AD397) who declared the official canon of Scriptures, selecting ONLY INSPIRED Books to be included into the Canon or List of Books. Indeed it is the Church, the household of God, that Jesus founded on the Apostles (Eph 2.20), NOT on the Bible - because the Church is the bulwark of Truth (1 Tim 3.15), NOT the Bible alone! PART 3 It is a Bible fact that... ✔ Jesus Christ commissioned men, not books; the NT calls these men "SENT" or in NT Greek, APOSTOLOS (ἀπόστολος) and not BIBLOS (Βύβλος or books). ✔ Jesus Christ sent them to preach the good news (Mk 16), not to write and distribute books. ✔ Jesus Christ advised them "He who hears you, hears me" (Lk 10.16) and did not say "He who reads your writings, hears me." ✔ the Aposltles went around Judea and outside Judea to the confines of the Roman world preaching about the good news without Bibles, and did not distribute any Bible. With a low literacy rate in those days, the absence of printing press, and the slow transport system, there was no way to reproduce and distribute Bibles because the Bible officially existed only in AD397. ✔ Paul himself confirmed that faith comes from hearing, NOT from reading or writings. Rom 10.17 God bless you and your family, Kenny! Laudetur Jesus Christus!

I think this is helpful and want to add more to the 2 Timothy 3:16 to 17 that most people miss. It states that all scripture is useful for training men into righteousness. That ought to mean that every command in the scriptures is useful for helping any man to be righteous. No Christian denomination believes that today. There are passages in the scriptures that do command the foreigner to be circumcised. If 2 Timothy 3:14-17 is true, then the command to circumcise the foreigner ought to be useful today, but no one today believes Gentile ought to be circumcised. We see that whoever really composed 2 Timothy (my Catholic Bible tells me it was probably not Paul) didn't believe the Christian faith like we believe it today. Again, when people throw 2 Timothy 3:14-17 at you, in response, you find a command in the Law of Moses that is not done today, that is seen as been abrogated today, and you insist that the author of 2 Timothy believed that command wasn't abrogated for Gentiles like Timothy. Watch your opponent go into damage control insisting that 2 Timothy 3:14-17 can't mean that and just keep reiterating its what the author wrote, they must believe that all of the Law of Moses still applies to every man today. It's fun to watch your opponent flail. Just recall all the times they tried to make you look silly.

The BEREANS!!! They are perhaps the greatest argument AGAINST sola scriptura. They lived and breathed the scriptures. They studied them. They discussed them. They pondered them. They disputed over them. They were totally consumed with 24/7/365 scripture. In all of this immersion in scripture, they missed one. tiny. detail. JESUS CHRIST! They had zero idea that Jesus of Nazareth was the long awaited Messiah. Even when Paul preached Christ to them, they had their doubts. They ran back to scripture to test what Paul preached. EVEN THEN! Not all of them converted! They were more noble than the Thessalonians, but that is not saying much! Poor examples to hold up. Bereans, have you believed because you have read? Truth is black and white. God owns all Truth. Truth is objective, not subjective. Tradition can be subjective. It can change through the centuries. We can confidently use the Bible as a measuring stick - synonyms for the phrase ‘measuring stick’ include a standard or benchmark. The Bible is the benchmark for truth, the book we can use to compare against other things in our life. We tend to use other frames of reference when searching for the truth in other areas or subjects - a school teacher may use a list of correct answers (the truth) for a math quiz to compare to how the students answered, or a dashcam video (the truth) can show what happened in a car accident when both parties blame the other for the accident. This is the case for the Bible - it is a book of Truth and there is no other source that can make the Bible appear as a falsehood. The Bible can be used as a benchmark against other religious books, other religions, including those that look and act like Christianity (LDS, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc.) It roots out all false gospels. You are prob familiar with John 1:1-2 where it states in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God…..and you’d prob agree that the “Word” mentioned in these verses is Jesus. Jesus represents all words in the Bible; the Bible is about Him firstly. And since Jesus created the world, the Bible (in its written form) had been planned from the beginning, along with everything else. Jesus used men to put it all together. Look at how the Israelites (through the different generations) are patterned throughout the Old Testament as having turned away from God and started to worship other gods, or do other detestable things. He then has a prophet speak to them using His words - Words that spring from His mouth. He uses His words to get the Israelites back on track (for a while at least :) ) - He does not use any other source or idea like the traditions of men. So my point in mentioning this is that humanity (regardless of culture or country) is fickle and fallible and God knows this. That is why He does not use anything from humanity for correction (meaning our opinions or thoughts/ideas), only His Word. How does one use Tradition to measure against fallacies or false gospels?

Ok...let's just go along with the idea that those books were not yet written. I don't have a problem with that. Since God, is ultimately the author of all of scripture, regardless of when it was written, and Paul and others who wrote were merely instruments of God as was their free will agency in writing the text, God clearly was not bound by time in making the statement through Paul regarding what the scripture was meant to accomplish. So, I don't think that the fact some books had not yet been written is a problem with the concept of progressive revelation. Additionally, did not Jesus berate the Pharisees for placing tradition over scripture? 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?" 6 And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. (Mk. 7:5-6 NAS) It would seem to me that Jesus adhered to this concept of scripture having preeminence. So, there is some weight behind sola scriptura when it is affirmed in practice by Jesus himself.

@KennyBurchard I would love for you to take a dive at it also.. I can see many things happening in Mark 9 that start to explain some questions that prodestants have and some Catholics may not understand. Such as; Saints in Heaven are alive, much about the resurrection and our life eternal, intercession, how we only worship Jesus above all but that doesn't mean that we can not ask our family in heaven for their intercession, the power of Prayer and fasting, infant baptism in that the possessed boy was like that when he was an infant. Jesus says they do "believe", also I see that we should recognize other people faith no matter how big or small and never do anything to hurt that, that we can loose our salvation and once saved always saved is just not true.. And of course the Holy Trinity. I can't go into detail about each here and also siting other verses that correspond w these but this is a very short caption of my thoughts.

@@KennyBurchard2 Peter 1 It seems at 1st the idea of knowledge in Christ is necessary but he doesn't stop there like so many scripture re-citers do.. it has to be met w Glory and Virtue He mentions partakers, promises, our desire for concupscience that we must fight against. This starts to show how our fallen state/originall sin is in all of us and yes even infants as we saw in Mark 9 they are not excempt. Promises seems to also refers to baptism again which makes us partakers and able to allow God's grace to work in us more effectively. Then he goes into these virtues so excellent.. even with all of the memorization of the Bible in the world our Virtue must also excel..as these virtues will give us knowledge of Jesus Christ.. compared to not only memorizing scripture Of course we must Labour's in Good WORKS!! And this is how we sustain our "election" Peter talks about his death, how he wanted to build 3 tabernacles in Mark 9 but now he calls himself a "tabernacle". That we should all remember his life and words and if Moses and Elijah are alive then Peter should be seen in the same way also..that Peter only helps us glorify God. And finally he says "We" as in the Church it would seem has the more valuable word which should be trusted than just anybody who just says they belive. For instance what occurs to me when I read Mark 9 and 2 Peter 1 would only make sense if I was able to submit myself to the Church's "interpretation" and teachings. As when I am reading these I read them w Faith in Christ and his teachings which are from his Church and Holy Scripture. These are just some quick thoughts that I had when reading that I would say go along with how Christ 1st started his Church which in turn he gave to the Church to recognize what was Holy Scripture...on the other hand to not read scripture 1st and then I make my own interpretations from it and then form or find my own church with the same preferences All mispelling are because of my phone and autocorrect... not because of me!!!! I would add 2 Timothy 2:2 as an alternative to Sola Scriptura. You can show the contradictions of Sola Scriptura but the Protestant will just fall back on the idea that this is the best we have. But Paul clearly tells Timothy to guard what Paul taught Timothy and to teach other men who will be able to teach others. Right there is apostolic succession and is a clear teaching for how the faith is supposed to be passed on. There is not a single command from Jesus or the Apostles about copying the writings of the apostles and that Christian’s are to hold to only those writings. Not a single verse although they try to use 1 Tim 3:15-16 to support this idea. But not only does 2 Tim 2:2 refute Sola Scriptura but it also explains how the faith is supposed to be transmitted.

Technically, sola scriptura is false. In the early days of Christianity, not too many people are literate. Even if they are literate, not too many of them speak or read Latin/ Greek, the languages used in the bible. Printing press was invented in the 1400's. Mass printing of the bible became possible years later. Christians rely on the church to HEAR the gospel. The monks manually copied the scriptures. and the copies are limited to the church. So where were the 'christians' who insist on sola scriptura during those times? Only people who can not handle the truth would still cling to this false idea.

In England, I don't have problems with protestants berating me for my faith. As both believe in Jesus. We don't have so many different denominations mainly three or four only. The problems we have are Muslims banging on and questioning me getting angrier and angrier, if you do not agree. In a taxi ride, 30 minutes kept saying I'm English I'm not comfortable discussing my faith with you. May as well been speaking Chinese. When I arrived home paid him said this is your tip, in England don't discuss politics or religion with people you don't know. Especially at nighttime, as you will get hurt, this is for your safety. I'm a woman , but do this to an English man regardless whether he is religious or not, you will become extremely uncomfortable as he could possibly take you up on your anger and thump you. There is no discussion with Muslims as they do eventually become more and more angry if you don't agree with them. Better not to discuss or ask to be dropped off at the nearest point where you can get a train or another taxi. It's that bad in England.

For example, do you observe the Sacraments instituted by Jesus and the Apostles, such as the Eucharist?
@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard Месяц назад
Thanks, Dan -- I do not call myself a teacher (if by that term, you mean the office gift of Teacher in Eph. 4). I am a layman and a Catholic who was formerly a non-Catholic (from 1986 to 2019), and a Pastor for 20 of those years. I was ordained in the Foursquare Church, and seminary trained (M.A. in New Testament) from the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary in California. When I was in that form of Christianity, I thought of myself as a Pastor-Teacher because I felt I was one, and because my denomination was willing to ordain me (though they had no biblical authority to ordain anyone, having no apostolicity, and having been started by people vs. having been started by Jesus). As far as what a person needs, outside of scripture (by that I take you to mean "apart from what is contained in scripture") to "enter the gates of heaven and spend eternity with your Lord and Savior?" -- I guess my question back to tease out the implications of the question a bit is; Do you believe some religions say they believe the Bible but have wrong interpretations of it to the degree that you would say, "That's not a Christian group, regardless of their claim to believe the Bible?" If you would answer yes, I'd say *you* have some things in mind in answer to your own question (since any group you might be thinking of also has a Bible). So -- what are those things?

@KennyBurchard tha ks for the response. I really appreciate it. You didn't really answer my question, just gave me a different question. 2nd question. Whobwoukd be the spiritual leader of a family. Do parents have no authority to teach the gospel to their children, or was it Jesus's plan simply to load them in the car and take them to church for the authoritarian? Finally, what is the Holy Spirit's role in the life of a believer?

A catechist once told me “Text without context is pretext.” Any two people can read the same text, but without context, each can declare himself correct even though they are opposed. The Catholic Church has always taught the correct context because they have had the teaching authority (Holy Spirit) since the canon was set. Pretext allows for human agendas and now here we are, with 30k+ Christian denominations, each with their own interpretation of Scripture. The Protestant rebellion makes every man his own pope!
