I’ve been MIA for a couple of weeks, but back with a fun tutorial! This is done on a 20 ounce Yukon tumbler. The base ink is Tim Holtz Latte, the top color is Brea Reese Brown.
Here are amazon affiliate links to both inks: caramel/ginger/latte set amzn.to/2N0SYuh and Brown single amzn.to/3988Btd

What helps me when applying ink is to lightly mist the brush itself with alcohal on occasion. Seems to give me a little extra time creating wood grain and knots giving it more definitions and texture.

I love your videos. I also do the wood grain cups. I paint mine white, do the latte ink and then spray with a sealer. It turns green until it dries. I then do my decal and my darker ink. No need for modge podge, epoxying and painting again.

What sealer are you using? Every spray I have tried ruins my ink!! I’ve even tried mod podge spray. 😩

I attempted to make this tumbler. When I removed the vinyl the deer head area was very sticky. Did I not let the epoxy dry enough? I tried using a little alcohol on a paper towel but it smeared the surrounding alcohol ink. It became a do over!

You do such great work, I love watching you! Question: I've never done a peek a boo because I don't have a cutting machine. Can I put stickers,paint over them and then just pull the paint out over those stickers? Thanks for sharing!

A little confused. First color ink, I know u do all that devil’s glue sealing, then, do u epoxy before your decal? Or decal, paint white, second ink, pull vinyl, then epoxy. I’ve never sealed inks, just wait 24 hrs & on to epoxy on a regular inked cup. Just trying to get steps straight

First: LOVE this cup!!! Also, love your videos and so happy they are out there as a resource for those of us working to learn this craft. Question: Between your first and second coats of Woodgrain (alcohol inks) you give it a full coat of spray paint (12:40). What's the purpose for that step? You've already laid down your removeable vinyl (11:15). Thanks in advance and keep the videos coming!
@ThePurpleStitch
@ThePurpleStitch 3 года назад
Thank you! Glad you find them helpful! ☺️ The white paint allows the woodgrain to show better. Some folks might do a light base and not bother with a white layer before dark inks. It allows it to have its own “texture” so to speak.
@patrickrenschler

Thanks for sharing! So you modgepodge before you clear coat? If I just use a spray can clear coat after the alcohol ink dries will that look bad over time?

Practice makes perfect!! I’ve tried dropping inks onto white paper to check color. I don’t feel like it’s accurate. Maybe grabs a couple of white tiles from a hardware store to test on? Good luck!

Did you just use a regular brush to paint on the Modge podge? It does it matter what kind you used?
@ThePurpleStitch
@ThePurpleStitch 4 года назад
I sometimes use a mod podge brush. But often just a paint brush that leaves a smith finish. Some say they use a foam brush, but I always end up with bubbles.

Could you skip the white over first color tone
@ThePurpleStitch
@ThePurpleStitch 2 года назад
You could try but it may not have contrast. If you epoxy after the first layer, there’s no harm in seeing how it turns out. Worst case, paint it white at that point. 😆

I epoxied between layers, layers the decal, sprayed white, inked again, then removed decals. So I’m betting what your referring to is the layer between. 🙂

So that the 2nd color would be more prominent. Otherwise it wouldn’t have turned out as bold of a contrast.

Stacey Shakeshaft it could be from touching it with bare hands, do you ever touch them between coats without gloves on? Once I realized I was doing that, it helped my fisheye problem. Also, I like to spray a clear coat paint before epoxy. That helps me a lot too.
