Deviating slightly from my usual content, let's take a look at the new version 3 of TwoTrees' Sapphire Plus 5 coreXY 3D printer! The SP-5 V3 has a build volume of 300x300x350mm, maximum print speeds of up to 300mm/s and now features a direct drive extruder and a Robin Nano V3.1 motherboard running Marlin with TMC2208 silent stepper drives.
Having never used an off the shelf 3D printer before, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to set up and get running even with my limited knowledge about 3D printing. I was basically able to get very good prints off the cuff using the included slicer settings. With Halloween so close I obviously had to print the best Halloween knick-knack I found on Thingiverse and Printables!

Thanks! Since at the time I really knew nothing about 3D printers I tried to make a rather neutral video showing everything so smarter people than me could form their own opinion. Though I guess I might still have been biased by the "shiny new toy syndrome"...

I am SOOOO glad to see you get a printer to "review". Yes, it's not the speed of a Bamboo, but it is a really good printer, and YES, it is SOLID. Love the "reed switch" as an upgrade of the Raven. Keep up the DIY, since you really are pretty amazing at engineering solutions out of basically CRAP, and THAT is a truly unique talent!

Auto bed leveling isn't about the rails, it's about the bed. When you head up a big flat piece of metal, it warps slightly. And it could warp differently every time. Automatic bed leveling adjusts for that slight warp to give a great first layer every time.

I have SP5 v1.1 but upgraded with diamond mount head and klipper, thanks to my friend done this upgrade which take almost all day :) I'm happy with my printer. I installed enclosure too but roof is missing. I need to done it too.

for a corexy machine: i highly recommend changing the infil angle to 0° or 90° as the 2 motors will be working together. this allows higher accels and speeds. 45° is perfect for bed slingers for the same reason. great video!

I have the previous version of the SP-5. I unlinked the Z motors to get automated bed tramming (G34 support). There’s not much use if you don’t have two end stops (mine has a single Z limit switch by default that I replaced with two independent optical ones) or a bed probe. The point of this is that you can ensure your bed is always parallel to your gantry before every print automatically. Generally overkill, but I hate manually leveling my bed. I added a mosquito high flow hot end, gdstime fans, a Sherpa micro extruder, bltouch, tmc2209s, and klipper to mine and it really screams. It fills the space between my X1C and my V2.4 350. Just need to get the enclosure panels. I know that Design Prototype Test has an SP-5 (early model) that he completely enclosed for high temperature printing. Hope you enjoy!

Honestly, personally I'm probably too lazy to bother with upgrades - though the fans could definitely do with being quieter ngl, not much point in quiet steppers if the fans sound like a jet engine...

Hi Chronic. Nice video. I've got an older SP-5. What a 'project' it has been over the years. When you get your sea legs, how about another video pushing the speeds? Seems an appropriate test for something advertised as high speed. Benchy in under 15 minutes 😂? I'm skeptical after zooming in the times on the slicer. Also it would be cool to walk us through the touchscreen functions.

I agree, an "opinion after xx months" video would be good, I've learned so much since getting this printer I now actually have options about it where in the beginning I was just overwhelmed by how cool everything seemed. Unfortunately I've been pretty slow at trying to print faster because I haven't been printing a lot since, so there might already be a new version of this printer on the market until I finally found my bearings and get around to making that video... 😬

its a good printer ,you did not mention the price ,or maybe i didnt hear it something is wrong with that extruder , the layer lines are not consistent , either you need to adjust the extrusion multiplayer in your slicer , or the extruder itself have something wrong with the hardware, CNC kitchen investigated and found out the gears in his extruder are not eccentric to the motor shaft , after that i found out i have the same issue and it really improved the print quality significantly also tune retraction and enable wiping on retraction (it will wipe the nozzle on the part itself to get rid of the blobs after retraction) also you need Automatic Bed Leveling , you should investigate how to add it on the cheap

Hi good video I ordered a new one and got the slightly older v1.1. Anyway was just wondering what size and diameter the new smooth belt pulleys are so I can order some with out having to vuy the whole high speed kit as Ive already teplaced the hotend and the extruder etc just need to swap out the pulleys and configure some new firmware again.

What, you ordered V3 and they sent you the old one? That's inacceptable, did you reach out to customer support? I could raise the issue with my contact there. The smooth idler pulleys are all 20 tooth size, 12mm OD 4mm ID

At what speed did you print the ghosts? I am looking for an upgrade for my old ender 3 and want to print at least at 80 mm/s

I printed most of the things in this video at the Prusa default setting (I think that's 40mm/s perimeters and 80mm/s infill) because this was the first time I touched a 3D printer and I didn't know what I was doing. I've since gone up to 120mm/s on this printer without any problems. Mechanically I see nothing preventing it from going the full 300mm/s they claim, it just needs some tuning to get there, which I haven't yet had the time or knowledge to do. When I just cranked up the speed I got some severe belt chatter :p

I noticed TWOTREES has the machines I've been looking for with similar architecture to the I3 Mega which unfortunately Anycubic pulled away from to go the open frame structure with side mounted control panels which I highly dislike, so I am interested in their machines, they have other machines as well CNC laser cutters which look well made for being entry level. I am looking to try both their I3 and the machine featured in this video. I don't care for bells and whistles more important to me is consistency repeatability and durability. I can level the beds myself not a problem in fact I prefer to do that, but if the machines come with auto-leveling even better. Amazon has the older CORE XY version I wonder if TWOTREES is considering updating their product line at Amazon.

My Tronxy X5SA 400 has a Semi Dual Z-Axis as well. Didn't saw it at first and ran it without the syncronizing belt. On a large Bed the Belt would slip on a XY, so they use two motors on one driver. The problem is that you need to syncronize the Z-Axis after every powerup without the Syncronizing belt, as one side might drop. So they got 1 Driver 2 cheap motors and a geared belt. And thats the problem on a real dual Z-Axis or tri Z- axis Core YX printer, thebed needs to be leveled, wih syncro belt it doesn't . So less firmware demand as well. So cheaper Prozessor, Marlin and less problems.

Haha, actually milk bottle caps, I have bags of them in the attic. Five people eating cereal at breakfast is bound to create plastic waste - I need to get that filament extrusion machine built ASAP so I can turn all that stuff into free filament!

This printer is solid but I think it lacks of state of the art features like Klipper firmware, ceramic hotend, input shaper, ABL, etc.

that's not annoying at all , just as i finished upgrading my sp5 v1.1 to orbiter direct drive extruder and ceramis core V6 hotend. Hotend on mine was total rubbish and looked just loike the on you have, jammed on first print and ket jaming every 10 minutes of printing. one motor would strugle to move bead at reasonable speed without being huge. and uncoupled double drive z axis motors always desync on power down. unless you home your printer every time before poering down And you zero/home position is on full motor step you will have desycned motors.

Oh noo! 😂😢 So far I only got the hotend clogged twice after forcing in super brittle PLA that splintered and jammed in the softened PTFE above the heat break.

@@ChronicMechatronic well i planned on using direct drive and full metal hotend anyways, but printing new mount proved impossible, had to use old knackered printer with rattling linear rails and max 15mm/s speed and 100mm/s2 accelerationto get half decent print 😂

No, when companies send stuff to influencers it's generally free since they do it for the publicity. I only took the deal to kinda get a feeling for what off the shelf units are like so I don't talk too much crap in my DIY builds - sort of as a a reality check since I've been doing 3D printing related content for years now without ever having seen a 3D printer in person...

Not really, I'm a bloody beginner at 3D printing so I was happy to get decent results at all. I did try to go up to 240mm/s and got a lot of belt chatter, but a Patron of mine said with proper tuning it'd likely manage the claimed 300mm/s
