It’s a great fly to tie Davey, and it’s such a pretty fly to look at. I’ve caught carp on this fly. I’ve just bought a variety of klinkhammer hooks actually, because the regular hooks I’ve been using are fine but it doesn’t let that tail of the fly break the surface like you say. Regards David

Your videos are almost as good as spending time at the vise. Watching them more than once is meditative and instructive at once, Thank you.

As a novice (3 yrs.) learning to tie flies I have watched a great many RU-vid instructional videos and have found Davie McPhail's to be the best. This particular fly is a favourite of mine and I learned to tie it here. It has been one of the most productive if not best in catching trout for me. Thanks again for all of the videos, keep them coming!

I have watched this video many, many times as you tie this pattern and it inspires me to get up, go to my tying table and tie a few more. It has to be my favourite all time pattern. It catches fish for me and I thank you for the video.

Brilliant Davie - until watching the way you tie yours I'd never been happy with my own Klinkhammers. I've done about ten over the last couple of nights using your way of turning the hook on its side and even I'm impressed with my results! Thank you so much - I'm addicted to your tutorials now!

Hi Keith Pickering, I tyed this Kilinkamer as it was originally tyed as far as I believe but it wasn't me that came up with this method, I do have to agree with you it's a great way to do them... All the very best Davie

It is extremely close form the real pattern, but not totally. Hans left a tag of polyyarn and he tapered it, he cover with the thread as an under body. The body is a little to short, in fact the body will be as long as possible. The dubbing must be the Fly Rite in Tan (number 19 and 20). In fact theses two colours are very close from the color of the killer bug when it is wet. The real formula is on the Oliver Edwards DVD (he was allowed to show the real formula in DVD "big flies for fast waters" because Klinks are always big flies, if it is on small hooks these are parachutes but not klinks) or best the film on Kvennan .com showing Hans tying his fly personnaly. All the best. www.kvennan.com/video/video_2013_003.htm

Hello again. This is one of my all time favourites. Works with almost all kinds of fish there are. Nicely tied also, as always. I personally tie the herl part little differently. I wrap the herl around the thread before tying it in. Super glue naturally works as fine under the thorax area. Thank you, Davie.

Hi Davie, Thanks for the video. I have some hooks but never tied any as I couldn't believe the size of them. By the way, your variant Sweeny Tod did very well with the Hodder sea trout this year. Ever thought of tying a Jambo, or other surface lure?? Would like to see it, especially tandem mounts.

Other than the expense of this hook, I just love tying this. My first ones came out terrible, but after watching you tie this over and over, I finally got it. This fly requires discipline. My only question is when you turn the fly so the wing becomes horizontal you say the hook should be pointing down, I have found it easier to point the hook up. This puts the wing perfectly aligned with the center axis of my rotary vise and I can apply the hackle by turning the vise and holding the hackle.

Hi Davie, could I ask you for a bit of advice please? I love tying Klinkhammer and other parachute patterns mostly in sizes 14-18. I bought a bronze whitings saddle cape but I find most of the feathers too large. Could you recommend what type of cape I should look for? I don’t want to waste money buying something unsuitable. Much appreciated, Nick
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 4 года назад
Morning Nick, I use the Whiting guide whitingfarms.com/whitings-olympic-grading-system/ to pick the saddle and capes for the flies I want to tye though I still prefer to look through them before I buy if I can..Their Hebert Minor dry fly necks would be worth looking at too as I have one myself, the feather length is amazing as I can easily get 6+ flies per feather and you will be able to tye many sizes..I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie..

Hi Martyn White, No they are big hooks for the size that most would recognise, I like to tye them on other hooks which do represent the right sizes we normally fish.... All the very best Davie

Out of interest (I've looked but not found) have you shown any reverse patterns as advocated by Peter Hayes? I haven't got the hang of the sequence on this type of fly with the hackle at the hook end and tail at the eye! Same flies but back to front . . . Roger

@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 10 лет назад
Hi John, I do blend and mess about with dubbing but these are mostly from ones that you can buy, Lite-Brite, Ice Dub, Seals Fur, Natural Dubbing and SLF from Wapsi are some of the best you can buy and any good supplier of fly tying materials should have them... All the very best Davie

Hi Swansea Jack, I'm sorry I should have got back to you much sooner, I thought I had answered you then I realised that someone else had asked the same question..I would say I like Poly-Pro Yarn the best but I'm happy to use a few other yarns like a plain Antron, Parapost and Aero Dry Wing as all will do a great job.. All the very best Davie..

Absolutely beautiful pattern!!! My only problem is that no matter what I do, I absolutely for the life of me can not get the dubbing to cooperate. Artificial dubbing... NOPE!!! Mixed dubbing.... not in this lifetime!!!! Natural dubbing... yet another huge resounding NNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'm to the point where I keep asking myself what is wrong with me!?!?!?! As long as the pattern doesn't require dubbing, I make it look fantastic. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?????
@randyherringshaw6325
@randyherringshaw6325 4 года назад
I have already tried waxing the tying thread (doesn't work at all), putting wax on my fingers (complete mess), putting super glue on the thread (what a fiasco) should have had a camera rolling for that 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 and even tried a dubbing loop and all for not. If something is broken almost always I can not only diagnose the problem, but repair it in less than a day. My Father's '94 Dodge Caravan had a cracked engine block. At 15 I stripped it down, fixed it and had it running again in less than 19 hours by myself, but I can't figure out dubbing??? I rebuilt my first internal combustion engine at 12, my Kawasaki KX 125.... and still dubbing is a mystery to me.🤯
@randyherringshaw6325
@randyherringshaw6325 4 года назад
I overlooked the details.... I have tried pulling the dubbing apart and putting it on after aligning the fibers and have tried pulling a clump out and spinning it like woolen yarn and still nothing. If anyone has any suggestions I'm definitely open to suggestions, thank you in advance!!!
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 4 года назад
Hi Randy, If you have any wool try it as It is one is the easiest fibres to dub with, just tease it apart and open out the fibres as this will work with most pattern like this one..I see you have tried everything to get the dubbing to hold, let me know how you get on... All the very best Davie..
