This is my second public comment about this video. It bears up to repeated viewings. If “Brevity is wit.”, (I think that’s Oscar Wilde but I’m too tired to Google it.) than your tying must be among the wittiest ever, not a wasted turn and total and inventive mastery of use of materials. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours.

It looks like magic tricks, the way you tie. It is a series of tricks but no less magical. I’m amazed by your videos. Every pattern well planned and well proportioned and well executed. Inspirational.

Davie, this is the second or third time I've watched this and each time I learn a bit more and the te hnics used are great and actually quite simple to implement, but I have found that choice of pheasant tail feathers is pretty important to get the thorax cover to sit well. I can't use wire as I don't have a ceramic bobbin holder, but as you sY it can work with thread I just add some flat lead wraps to gain the weight. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

Loved this 3 killer nymph vid Davie. Sometimes the obvious needs to be noted. I'll try tying these with fine wire instead of thread...seems to save some steps and simple is always best. Thank you once again for sharing tour skills with us.

Hi Davie, and thanks so much for all the videos. But I must tell you I have watch many of your videos since I started tying a year or so ago since I retired, but this one on the killer nymphs, I can see why you nicknamed them Killer. They look so great and I don't know why I did not see this one before. going to try today to do them. I really like the technic with the wire so you don't have to use any beads to get the nymph down so it looks more natural. Great tie as usual. Thanks again and God Bless you and your family and again thanks for sharing.

Davie ,,inspired by you I have taken my fly tying gear out again ,I may have come up with a new pattern. I don't know if I've ever seen one tied like it. A caddis fly has swept back ''tent'' like wings ,so I used the ''Wally wing'' method but tied them on backwards and close down to a dark brown dubbing body. A grizzly hackle made up the legs. On a size 12 hook. Truly relaxing watching you work.

Davie, Great patterns that are easy to tie and will catch fish! One thing I have added is to fold half of the ends of the pheasant tail fibers down each side to emulate legs/wing butts at the end of the tie instead of trimming them off at the top of the head. I trim them to the desired length after the whip finish. It seams to give the fly a bit more motion and a little different profile in the water. If they do wear off after multiple fish the it's back to the original form. I appreciate all of your efforts in sharing your talents with us. I learn something new from each pattern you demonstrate. You truly make fly tying fun instead of a chore. Thanks a million and keep them coming!Happy New YearDoug

Davie smashing Video as usual Sawyer talked of a very fine copper wire to tie his Nymphs and luckily I found some many yrs ago ,not as think you will agree it is really that important ! Now here is a thing my Grandmother left me a Copper Kettle that my Great Great Grandfather had won fishing a contest on the River Trent 150 yrs ago . They used to say that as I have been a Keen angler since a lad ,I'm now 76 i must have Taken after him .Well like most Grand Ma's my Gran was usfull with the Knitting Needles and she always kept bits and bobs of wool Darning needles etc in the Kettle. Some yrs ago I read in a fly tying mag that Sawyer used a pink Coloured Wool for his Grayling Bug style Nymphs ,the Wool was sold by Chadwick's and in the Kettle were half a doz of these Chadwick Card Wrapper's with Various coloured Wools , Unfortunately the Wool that Sawyer used for his Bug is not amongst them . All the wool's needles Etc are still in the Kettle as my Gran left it when she passed away 50 yrs ago. I have tied the odd one our two Nymphs with Grans Wool just for fun ,and get a great kick out of taking the odd Fish lo.

Hi Anthony Groucutt, It's great that you can go back this long in your family history to your great great grandfather and own a prize that he won for fishing I would have loved to own something like this myself...I'm glad that you enjoy the videos and the flies I tye whichI thank you for letting me know. The chadwicks 477 yarn I have I found no less than a couple of months ago at a car boot sale and it cost me 50p which was very lucky though it can be found but many don't know that it is very sought after...I would like to wish you a Happy New Year... It has become a dream to have some of that yarn. I know with the exchange rate I would have to hit the lottery. (I can't I don't play). The longer I wait the less of the Chadwicks 477 will be left. I do have a sub I got from Veniard's, I should be satisfied with that. But the more materials I get, the more I need. I think that is an addiction. Just between you and me ;D. All the best to you and yours. Sean

I just saw sine Chadwicks 477 sell on ebay for 187 dollars. And it was a partially used single card!!!!! That suff has become a collectors item. Isn't alpaca yarn just as useful?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 6 лет назад
Hi LockTest, It is a lot of money for a card of yarn. I bought a card from a boot sale for 50p and another card which had a colour very similar to the 477, I have tried both and they do work so I would say it's worth tying a sub as they may just work.. All the very best Davie...

@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail Год назад
Hi @ryantherock7664, The patterns in the video are the ones I mostly fish in the river and the other style I mainly fish in the lochs as I liked to show the copper wire off at the thorax as these fished better for midge pupa.Though both patterns work on the river and lochs... Hi Davie - great simple ties. I am new to tying so these r brilliant for me to work with and I know they catch fish down under. (NZ South Island). What r the subs for Chadwicks 477 yarn? Merry Xmas - have a great one! Xmas here NZ time. Grant Whelan
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Grant Whelan, As you said these are simple flies, they will always catch you fish anywhere and ideal as well for someone starting out in tying their own flies...I have seen subs for the Chadwicks but I feel it's not worth the bother but have a look at the colour and try and source something nearer home by looking in your local sewing shop as it will probably work just as well...Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too... All the very best Davie

Great video as always. You make the best fly-tying videos that I have seen. Do you tie commercially? If so, do you have any tips for getting into commercial tying? I used to wholesale some flies, starting when I was ten years old. I gave that up in my early twenties because even the small bait shops here in southern Michigan (US) seem to buy cheap, low quality imported flies. Either that, or they buy low(er) quality flies from their buddies or relatives for almost nothing. I really wish there was a market for lower volume/high quality flies again. Best wishes and please keep the videos coming.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi handcannon, If you tye a good fly I'm sure you will get a good price as many of the flies that come from abroad are not that well tyed, so if you just keep working away you will certainly get your own customers and the ones that are willing to buy a well tyed fly that catches fish and doesn't fall apart...This is how I got orders and it does take time to build up but it will happen if you just keep working away.. All the very best Davie

Davie, how do you keep the fine copper wire from twisting up and breaking off in your bobbin holder? I want to easily add the weight of the copper wire using my bobbin holder, but it's become so frustrating that I've opted for using thread at the expense of nicely weighted nymphs.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Stephen Palmateer, Just make sure that you adjust the bobbin holder so that the bobbin runs smoothly from it and if you can use a ceramic bobbin holder as this helps a lot to stop the wire waring as you wind...If you can as well use the UTC wire as it is coated and is great to tye with..Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when it comes... All the very best Davie
@kamilponikowski9176
@kamilponikowski9176 8 лет назад
+Stephen Palmateer Yeah just make sure that the bobbin holder is well adjusted. I have never had problems with breaking wires even when tying with the cheapest/lowest quality bobbin holders. You can also tye flies without bobbin holder, simply doing it by hand.
