The word "hackamore" is derived from the Spanish word jáquima, meaning headstall or halter. In this video, I’m gonna go over the different types of traditional hackamores and what you should look for when buying one.

In Mexico, at least historically, bozales and jáquimas, or “hackamores” as you called them, were made with horsehair. This doesn’t mean that rawhide jáquimas were not available, they did exist and were used but the most common ones were horsehair.

Wanted to add, it doesn't matter the breed of horse if you want to use a hackamore. We have a rescued from slaughter Tennessee Walking Horse who was really scared of the bit. The trainer put her in what he calls a "loping hackamore" or "loping halter" which is like the thin one you show but has a tie that goes from the bottom back to the poll and when the horse drops her nose all pressure is off. This has been a miracle for the horse and she is so quiet while riding in it. Now she is back in the bit and doing great. Thanks for a great video.
