What I never understood about the criticism on ANTM (and what I now as an adult am able to see as purposeful gaslighting) is that the photographer, set designer, stylist, and virtually everyone on the set is never to blame for anything. It is always the model's fault. And in reality, a lot of the crappy shoots we remember are a result of very poor planning and performance from the set crew and photographer. Even the most skilled model cannot make gold out of crap. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ironic that Nigel tried to intimidate them by saying ''one of you is going to be Vogue Italia'' just after the photographer had slated Lexie saying she should'nt model, but she ended up getting featured in Vogue Italia a few years later without the help of the show so I don't think the judges really had any idea of the girls potential. :P

Yes! There have been many former ANTM models who were booted off the show but then went on to have a relatively successful modeling career on their own, because ANTM's over produced, over the top photo shoots often don't show a model's true potential. Let's be honest, the show was first and foremost a reality tv show focused on the drama, the modeling was far less important.

I am NOT convinced she was hitting on him and trying to start something. Remember these women have been cut off from friends and family for months. Any connection to home, especially someone who understands the show, would make one of the models giddy with joy. Especially when the women haven’t been able to talk to many other people besides the other women in the house. We know the producers and editors can spin footage and words to create a false narrative. Question - didn’t Lenox tell us the photographers pose them? I’m starting to get confused on how much control the models have on their poses.

As someone who used to model, I definitely agree about the defeatist photographer attitude. I was focusing more on the poses for one shoot and the photog said "It seems like you don't even want to be here". LOL And I was honestly really enjoying myself. Turns out he was mad that I wasn't connecting with him. I didn't work with that one again. I actually worked with a lady photog twice because she was so constructive.

So we don't know how to connect the dots, huh? The continuous complaints about all the models having "dancer" poses, but like they are in a harness and then told to look graceful. For balancing purposes, the majority of people dangling in the sky on strings would probably maneuver into those positions to help hold their balance enough to be photographed. If every model is doing it, it is more likely your setup than them "copying each other". If every student fails on a test, it's your test that's the problem, not the students. Practicing in the harness and having someone show them how to move in it would have solved that, but that would require a show that actually cares about modelling and not one that just wants to make fun of people for ratings.

Yes, thank you! Certainly didn't help with the critique that half of them looked like dancers. Half the girls seemed to be DRESSED like dancers. And the only thing particularly 'fallen angel' about the styling was the black feathers which looked awkward and cheap. Add to that the blue sky and the beach, and this photoshoot failed to communicate the theme on just about every level. The models were easily the best part, as at least some of the poses were kind of interesting. And it was such a cool theme too.

So on Oliver Twist’s channel he interviewed a lot of the girls from this season, Chris, Lexi, and Kaci were the big three I can think of, and this season all of the girls got along really well, so Ken Mock shut down the cameras and told the girls if they didn’t start giving the drama they would have to recast everyone. Soo the amped the drama between Lexi and Kaci, they sent Chris’s sister home and then would ask her about it constantly, production made Kaci ask the guys to the house (she had tried out on previous seasons so producers knew her well enough to ask her to start drama). Also, apparently on set the girls did really well (according to Lexi) and then when they went in for judging they were confused about the pictures that were chosen. When you started talking about test photos it actually lines up a little with what was said about this shoot

People who said you won’t get money doing graphic designing obviously don’t see what kind of technological age we’re in, poor souls.
@truzle6133
@truzle6133 2 года назад
The mean salary for a graphic designer is not really that much ($53,000) so it just depends on where you're living and how much you're borrowing for student loans. You wouldn't want to go to a college that was over $20,000/yr for a degree in graphic design because by the end of your bachelor's you'd be $80,000 or more in debt which would be very difficult to pay back. The average pay for entry level is only $32,000-37,000 and you're considered entry level for about 3-5 years. It's a difficult field "to make it" in - only 30% who start out with a job in graphic design are still in the field after 5 years.
@JavelleElaine

@@truzle6133 That is still better than A LOT of entry level jobs that may be a business major or even architect major. My point was still in a technological age, there's room for growth faster within a technological industry that shouldn't be taken lightly. There's nothing easy about any entry level job that you're starting out in, so that wasn't my argument either. You're making a general statement that applies to most jobs, I'm just saying that her field shouldn't be looked over in the industry that we are now in, some people are recruited right out of college and some will have to struggle until they get to where they want. I was only stating that her type of work is not to be taken as if its low end, most entry level jobs are just like that. Industrial engineering has 14% growth, physical therapy has 35% growth, and software development has 22% growth to name a few. i would definitely like for jessica to react to episodes of australia's top model to compare the two shows because the contrast between them are actually insane. watching season 1 of aus next top model, it was a much better environment for the models. no crazy photoshoots, the inappropriate and problematic commentary was kept to a minimum, and the biggest thing for me was the judges actually conversating with the models during panel and allowing the models to give their opinion on their own photos (both good and bad) and in general just treating the models as co-workers rather than the superiority vibe we got from the antm judges. i was pleasantly surprised and i think you would be too.

the production design on this one was so bad.. theres no way those girls couldve made this concept work any better than they did, there was barely any concept to begin with.. the ideas there were wonderful but the styling, the setting, pretty much everything set them up to fail. next to none of these feel like 'fallen angels' its more like dead birds. those girls did everything they could and im amazed some of them made it look good at all, they were set up.

Honestly it also looks like this photographer doesn't know how to transition settings from one skin tone to another when it comes to the background being blown out. Sure, maybe lighting did change, but blaming girls for bad film really boils down to posing and instructions. Also, did the photographer even really know the words that were chosen? Help at all towards getting a result other then pointless criticism about who should or should not model? Honestly ANTM is really a negative environment and the coaches themselves are creating drama rather then portraying the industry accurately.

I’ve noticed that in a lot of professions that are predominantly female (modeling, teaching, nursing, etc) everyone else creates the environment in which they work, with little to no input from them, yet they are entirely to blame when it doesn’t work. Nurses are overworked, underpaid, understaffed, yet it’s their fault quality of care goes down. Teachers are never consulted about what actually works for their students- just handed more programs, policies, and rules to juggle on an already overstocked plate, and blamed for poor test scores, not pleasing all the parents, etc. Models are put on a set and made up, without input, then blamed when it doesn’t look good. I don’t think this is a coincidence.

That moment in the video was *so* important I felt it should/could be a stand alone in and of itself. I remember distinctly that as I excelled in school and developed my passions, when I would present them (to extremely positive review) adults would be impressed and encouraging *until* they asked, or I informed them, that I wanted to persue said passion professionally. Even individuals in the field. There was a constant hammer hanging that said, "No matter how good you are, there's always going to be someone better or luckier than you. *Don't quit your day job.")* Looking back, it was even *more* ridiculous to carry the narrative that I needed to focus on a more "realistic" goal; eg Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher ect when I was a *child* and didn't have a "day job". That seed of doubt however, postponed or surrendered numerous opportunities I could've taken. The moment I "stepped out" and "rebelled" by persuing my real loves they eventually went from recreation to vocation - because I did so with passion. Devotion comes easily when it's something you genuinely enjoy and care about.

It's the reason why they're are so many Americans in their early twenties with $30,000- $50,000 of student loan debt and a completely unmarketable bachelor's degree like interdisciplinary studies, community organization, history or psychology. I agree with this, if the model isn't super in their face with the concept, then they say the model didn't do a good job. This show is a good example of how workplace bullying works. The whole targeting personal and emotional topics are the reason why most toxic work environments don't like people who keep to themselves because they lack anything to attack you personally where it really hurts. Toxic managers and coworkers like it when you tell a lot about yourself and talk a lot about yourself because the things you say are weapons that you are giving them that they can use against you at a later date when they feel like it, maybe when you're doing something that doesn't please them even if it is for your own good like not partaking in gossip with them, etc or even when you are at your best and looking confident, they bring those topics up to knock you down. Unfortunately for these girls on ANTM their information is taken before the show while they think that it is a procedure only for them to realize when it is too late why they were being asked all those personal questions. And that's on toxic people, so if you are a well-intended person be careful who you tell about yourself.

12:00 I think that wasn't a bad criticism. The model doesn't see the way she looks in the photo, so a photographer saying "hey the position of your foot is not flattering, can you change it?" is helpful and valid. She was not calling her "Bigfoot" it was just that because of all the shadow and the angle the foot looked bigger than it was. It happens and you need the photographer to tell you to change it into a more flattering position. EDIT what the photographer said next is just disgusting and has nothing to do with constructive criticism. Maybe the model didn't do a great job in that harnass she has been in for the first time surrounded by cameras and hostile people... that does not mean she should not be a model. Let people have a bad day or not be super graceful hanging in the air. A "bad" photoshoot does not take your ability to model away from you. Those women are there to learn, not to be perfect supermodels already.
@horse101lv
@horse101lv 2 года назад
I think the issue was how the photographer spoke the critique. Instead of saying “your foot looks big at this angle” she should’ve said something like “turn your foot more this way, please” or “I prefer the way your foot looks when you pose it like this” because that 1. Actually gives the model a direction to follow and a way to change her body to get a better picture. Just knowing her foot looks big doesn’t tell her how to make it look small. And 2. It’s way less insulting. Anyone upon hearing that would just be worried now that their feet look big and it would be distracting and upsetting when you’re young and inexperienced and just trying to get a good picture. Think about any time someone has pointed out something negative about your appearance. It sticks in your head whether you want it to or not. So it’s okay the photographer thought her foot looked big. It’s not kind or necessary to voice that out loud.
@YunaElphabaLovegood
@YunaElphabaLovegood 2 года назад
@@horse101lv Again, I don't mind the critique, yeah she sounded harsh, I think she did not have a good day so she was ultra snappy and that was uncalled for. But I don't think it's insulting to say "at this angle your foot looks big". But I guess I am just thicker skinned than you. If someone says "this angle of your foot isn't working" that is direction enough. You change it and you can follow up with "is this better?" if you are unsure. As a learning experience I think it is better to have the freedom to move the foot yourself and not be babied into position. Better to turn/place it and learn to do it myself. But that is my approach and I am fine with clear directions or vage ones. Sometimes to get the right shot you need to get directed millimeter by millimeter. I don't fit your description of "anyone", then. Surprise! We are individuals that think differently! I do not take criticism personally. It's about the photo, not about me. I actually had someone comment on how they could never take criticism the way I do, before. Honestly, I never much cared about people criticising my appearance. It maybe was with me for a minute but then it was gone - it did not matter. I did develop a bit of vanity later in life. But as a kid/teen I was busy trying to survive, my appearance was not on my mind, at least not in the "do people think I am pretty" way. Not everyone has your experiences and takes stuff the same way you do. So please stop talking about how "anyone" would see things the way you do. "Most people", maybe. Not "every single person in existence" I am sick of my experience being erased/invalidated by comments like this, explaining to me how I allegedly think. Why not ask me what I think ?^^ Instead you decided to project your own thoughts and insecurities onto me. How would you feel if I did that to you? As someone who has Aphantasia I know what it's like to think in a different way, that other people can not even fathom. So yeah, please stop telling my what and how I think. Because that is something I find insulting. My experience is just as real and valid as yours. That being said, I am always for treating people with kindness and respect. And that photographer did neither. (But as I said, I hope she is nicer, normally and just had a bad day. She should have behaved more professional. But I've had bad days... )

Sorry Jessica, I'm having a heart felt moment here. Your videos and your jokes ALWAYS I just wanted to thank you, your videos and your jokes ALWAYS me laugh and smile even during my darkest times. It can be pretty hard to get me to laugh when you're really struggling with your mental health when you're always on the verge of tears that you're trying to choke back 99% of the time. I love you and thank you so much for making me laugh, it really means so much to me. Love you xoxox

Hi, Jessica. Thanks for the brilliant content. I love watch your videos. Please, do something with photoshoot challenges from Drag Race. This could be amazing and so funny.

Luxeria reviewed an old episode recently where they shot a “Wonder Bra ad” where they were all instructed to be very sexual with the male model, resulting in the underwear not being displayed in the photos. Then they were critiqued for their posing, that they were directed to do. It’s pretty clear that nothing about this show made any sense and everything was just a script.

just gotta say RIP andre. he might be harsh, but he was less harsh than the others and one of the better judges for the show.

I love constant commitments on “dancer poses” but like if they’d have not done it they would have constantly talked about them not modeling from head to toe

My mom told me going to school for graphic design was pointless because I’ll never get a job or make any money. I wish I never listened to her because graphic design is very needed in today’s world 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

"With the calibre of photographers this season, you girls gotta step it up!" The photographer did a horrible job! The exposure and cropping are awful in these!

you should see the episode where the one model cheats on her bf and sleeps with a male model. they sent models over to the house, while the girls were drinking, and one girl got too drunk and slept with one of the male models. then they all just left. it was like, first of all, that's not safe. you don't know these men and you send them over to house full of girls..

It’s not school bullys. Its worse, they are the JUDGES who choose if these girls stay, they have more power, and they laugh and redicule these girls. Its not ok.

It's always cringe to see Tyra act out or demonstrate poses😂

Honestly I don't know why all these models haven't gotten together for a lawsuit against Tyra for false winning prizes, none of these girls made the money that she claimed they'd get and they were treated so poorly.

For me, honestly, all the pictures were not that good at all, they feel bland, and it's hard to tell that it's a fallen angel shoot. I know that the girls did an amazing job with what they're doing-especially with that harness, but the end product and results just didn't look good for me, at least. No shade towards the models or anything like that; I just feel like this photoshoot wasn't given a lot of attention in the end with how they look.
