Sorry to be That Guy but farming was normally worse than nomadic life. More work for less reward. People generally had to be forced into farm labour. ... so i guess this fits a grimdark future.
I don't know if GW has changed it, but the lore I know makes Tiamet one of my favorite hive fleets. It has taken over a system of a few planets and periodically harvests life from those planets without stripping them clean. This life interestingly enough bears tyranid genetic markers. The hive fleet is using this harvested biomass to build some kind of tower. The tyranids are building something and nobody has any idea why.
Maybe the tower is going to be used fuck up chaos or warp bullshit or as a super beacon for all the tyranids to come or even Uber charge the hive mind in galaxy. Either way it’s gonna be BAD regardless.
Hmm. Tiamet is a multi headed Dragon God(dess) in fantasy. What if they're building a gigantic Tyranid bioform which the literal Hivemind itself can take direct control of and make manifest a direct avatar of its own will and presence? Not merely its favored servant and commander, the Swarmlord, but to create a personal physical avatar for the Hivemind. The Tyranids through Tiamat [Fleet], the multi headed Dragon God, are preparing to create a new "head of the Dragon" for their godlike Hivemind. Even if you kill said being and cut off its head, just like Tiamat it still has more heads and it will simply regrow the lost head. This creates the potential for the Hivemind itself (and by extension the Tyranids) to finally communicate directly with its enemies and give the Tyranids more character beyond nom nom. Think just like the Gravemind (Halo) or original Overmind (StarCraft 1). Just like the escalation in the series through the Loyalist Primarch's return, the Chaos Primarchs resurgence, the Silent King's return, etc. for each of their respective factions, the Tyranid's escalation is the direct appearance of their Hivemind into the galaxy. The presence of the Hivemind's avatar could also serve as an indirect beacon due to its psyker might, attracting Tyranids to the galaxy, as well as forming a massive Shadow in the Warp due to the Hivemind's direct presence in the physical plane.
Welcome to PBS. Today, on NOVA, we will examine how these Xenos of invasive species explore the galaxy and absorb entire resources after devouring the planet. This is NOVA.
24:30 That was the Necron fleet of Anrakyr the Traveler, and he harvested the T'au colony on Ka'mais because it was a Necron tomb world, and he was like "Greetings. You are trespassing. Goodbye."
Read his wiki page, got a new fav Necron Overlord. Quote time: “I am not capricious, nor am I given to cruel acts for their own sakes. It is simply a fact that you and your kind have trespassed, and thus invited extermination. Curse you for putting me to this inconvenience.
One of the other terrifying things about Kronos, at least from the standpoint of Chaos, is that at one point Kronos stopped the Great Rift from spreading. The world of Shadowbrink was about to be consumed by the Great Rift but then Kronos landed and not only did their Shadow in the Warp stop the spread of Chaos on the the planet but it actually pushed it back. Think about it. The Great Rift is this nigh unstoppable tide of chaos energy that's consuming the galaxy bit by bit. And Hive Fleet Kronos, at least on one planet, went "Naw. Un-chaos your shit."
Honestly the rough equivalent could also be said about xenophobia for any sentient race that has had to evolve since the fall of the eldar empire or deal with the dark eldar
@@robrib2682 Yeah it's not xenophobic to hate aliens if every alien race you've ever encountered has attempted to exterminate you. That's just self-preservation at that point.
@colby1398 It does create a slight issue when you run in to the one or two races that was actually peaceful. Then again it is much easier to shoot a target standing still, and if there is no more aliens there is no more problem
You guys forgot to mention The Court of the Nephilim King! It's a splinter fleet of Behemoth that focuses on quality over quantity. Instead of flooding your enemies with termagaunts, they send in way fewer warriors and a bunch of monster units and then outsmart their opponents. It works especially well because their prey will prepare to deal with the typical swarming nids, but instead find that their weapons aren't that effective against the tougher bugs, and then they get outsmarted, which is not typical for nids.
"The court of the Nephilim King" Now thats a cool name, and the fact that it used that kind of strategy makes me think the Hive mind puts more atention on them
Some interesting things about Hydra: as mentioned in another comment, they actively cannibalize smaller splinter fleets. This has contributed to an unexpectedly rapid growth in both numbers and knowledge, as they subsume the strengths and knowledge of the fleets they eat. They also respond to the psychic death screams of other hive fleets, effectively turning them into a cleanup crew for any battlefield that actually managed beat back the nids. There's an anecdote where the Imperial guard defeated a splinter fleet on this one planet, and in the middle of the planetary leader's celebration, the sun gets blotted out by swarms of Hydra Tyrannid spores. Lastly, the way that they invade a planet is also particularly mean-spirited. They set up a network of spores in orbit around the planet they choose, but only send down one or two small groups of say, Termagaunts. As soon as even one of the Termagaunts is killed, a large portion of the spores in orbit descend on the location of the dead Nid, increasing the amount of spores with the amount of resistance they meet. That's why they're named after the Hydra, their invasion tactics are literally "cut off one head and two others grow in it's place."
In relation to the Zoat things real real old lore before the Tyranids were what they are now said the Tyranids used Zoats as diplomats, an enslaved species or one made for the job. The concept being they could probe out how valuable a species would be before they tried to eat them up. At some point they either were seen as useless and got eaten up or the nids just stopped making them altogether, which is in lore for why GW got rid of them. They've made a tiny return in Blackstone fortress as one of them is exploring the ruins of the fortress also fun lore; The protein-rich biscuits that constitute the Zoat diet are known as Zoatibix
Less diplomat more someone who bothers to communicate first to engage in some extra fuckery if it might be more energy efficient to do so. There's a rather neat old short story, I think for the Advanced Space Crusade game, about some space marine scouts who managed to get onto a dormant hive vessel, and they meet a Zoat whose not slumbering like the other creatures in the long voyages through the void, and is basically there to mess with their heads long enough for the hive rouse the actual combat beasties. Did like the bit where he notes that other marines in the Lambs have already become part of the greater whole of the Tyranids where of course he actually means the Lamenters.
1st edition is a strange beast. When the writers were just throwing in any ideas they had, and the lore hadn't been iterated yet into the form we're familiar with now. This was the edition where Space Marines weren't transhuman warriors, but rather just criminals and psychopaths given psycho-indoctrination, a suite of combat drugs, and got sent on their way. They were cops in power armor, essentially. The Tyranids hadn't yet been written as these hive-minded bioweapons. A "Tyranid" in the Rogue Trader era were basically just smarter Gaunts that could use tools, albeit fleshy ones. The Zoats were among many alien organisms the Tyranids had enslaved, using pheromones to maintain control over them. Funnily enough, because a "Tyranid" was a narrowly defined thing, their rules stated your Tyranid force needed to be made up of mostly Zoats, in terms of number of units. As such, the army was less "managerie of bio-horrors all serving the hive mind", and more "big aliens serving their little alien masters". For this reason, I wouldn't think too hard about how we got from there to the current situation. The lore is dramatically different, to the point where trying to make sense of it is a fruitless effort.
@@Skitarii_Ranger no still exist in fantasy they have more lore there they are teachers of wood elf’s mages and are of a time before the old ones , and made a deal with them to take over the forest 🌳 while the old ones were in war with chaos
I'm a little saddened they didn't mention some of the quirkier events of some hive fleets. Like that Tiamet has settled down and become farmers or that Ouroboros came out of the Eye of Terror thousands of years before Behemoth arrived. But yeah, Tyranids are dope. I still have some of the Battle of Macragge 'nids lying around. Maybe they'll grow into a proper Hive Fleet one day.
i cant remember the source but there's a story where Gorgon fought Death Guard and they left the planet so tainted that the hive fleet abandoned the world. Matter of fact one hive ship got greedy and went to reclaim the biomass and the other hive ships shot it out of the sky.
New headcannon: Hive Fleet Harbinger has an extra strong control over its various Tyranids and even Genestealers, so that when they come to a planet, they're extra organized since the Hive Mind is ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL! EDIT: Warlord trait: ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL. In addition to this warlord trait, this warlord has one additional warlord trait chosen at random. When this warlord is destroyed, select another HIVE FLEET HARBINGER character, and generate a warlord trait for them, including this one.
I am disapointed that they did not mention the fact that when they talked about tiamat, that tiamat is building something in their own star system (also called tiamat), like a super structur/creature, that is spanning almost an entire world. And that this hive fleet has been there since before M35
Best ending of them all! It just ended just like that. Perfect end. Plus Kronos is my favorite Hive Fleet thanks to how unique they are with how they're anti warp and anti Chaos.
31:21 Dk: The Tyranids are sus, call the emergency meeting! Genestealer: That's right they're sus! Genestealer Captain: I got my bat, now where's the imposters!!
Growing??!! Not consuming??!! Holy shit! And some thing? As in a single thing? How huge is that tyrannid that it needs so long and an entire star system to grow??
Well that's the thing. The individual units have no meaningful intelligence or personality, barring unique units like the Swarmlord and Ol' One Eye, but the Hive Mind itself operates on a level only surpassed by the Chaos Gods. So technically speaking, the Tyranids think more than any other faction.
@@Brutalyte616 True, but I prefer the individuality of units when in an army. I like that every ork boy in my army have slightly different wants or needs compared to the boss, or that every guardsmen could have different lives off the battlefield.
@@bait4sale9001 Not to mention all that intelligence just goes towards eating. You can say the hive fleet is big brain you want, but it’s for one boring goal.
I like how you can just feel Bricky's hatred of the Eldar even when just having to mention them in passing. I say as an Eldar player. Sorry Bricky. EDIT: Tyranids are scary and bad ass. They need to actually win more in the lore, can't wait to get their current codex
Bohemoth is the fleet that avoids Ultramarine space now due to losing a Hive Queen, which holds the primary DNA strain that every single Behemoth past or future uses as the foundation for their form. Blueberries made a poison out of it that breaks down the dna chains rapidly of their hive. Basically, they find tyranid then toss the bombs into the middle of them. If they are Behemoth, EVERYTHING DIES. Because of how tyranid function every single life form in the fleet has the same base dna chain no matter what the unit is. After that happened Queens are seen far far less as the queen holds the base dna unfiltered and uncorrupted or mutated and getting that dna chain is like having the keys to unravel an entire fleet. It is the tyranid's fatal flaw. When they lose a Queen it can end that fleet's entire survival. It's old lore but I don't remember it ever being changed.
Bricky, if you dont leave the house much that is primarily why you get sick more often. Firstly you need some sunlight, secondly if you are couped up inside your immune system does not interact with many threats for the bacteria and virus's within your abode are mostly homogenous. Your immune system can not be allowed to go lax. Thirdly pay attention to your diet. You may be deficient in vitam c or a number of other essential nutrients that is needed for healthy immunity. Get some echinacea tea. Last but not least, make your you have ample and a steady if not some what regular sleep schedule. Less sleep and or interrupted sleep can and will cause immune deficiency. I hope this helps.
Even with a fate of "get eaten alive", I do wonder where Tyranids actually rank in the line of terrible things to happen to a character in this franchise 🤔
Despite how terrifying they are, I'd rank them more in the middle... Especially with Chaos and Drukari being around. At least with the 'Nids you'll just get nommed... Beats a possible eternity of torment.
They do eat you very quickly, to be fair. Getting cut in half by a chainsword or lit up by a flamer would be worse than dying to 'Nids, unless it was a ripper swarm going full piranha mode on you.
Ok now I just want to see what auroboros would get for unique rules, of course some buffs for your flying units but I could also see them getting some aura/buff shut off abilities like the night lords. Could be really interesting.
@@MattManDX1 Tiamat has my favorite color scheme, but the first tyrannic war is some of the best Tyranid lore so behemoth has that place in my heart. Behemoth also has S tier colors
Bricky hasn't done the best job of emphasizeing that all Tyranid hive fleets are hyper adaptive, that's the actual true horror of the nids. Not that they have endless numbers but that they will learn and adapt and creat the perfect counter to what ever situation they find themselves in
Tyrannids are kind of a fridge horror in that while druhkari and chaos are pretty upfront horrifying, but you don't really think that hard about how scary the tyrannids are besides starship troopers-esque bug swarms. but then when you think of it you realize just how SUBLIME the horror of tyrannids is, because even the swarms we see today have only been SCOUTING fleets, meaning that they probably have more soldiers than all factions COMBINED, and convinced even the silent king to stop his exile. and not only are their numbers incomprehensibly vast, to the point they easily blot out entire *suns*, but they can even evolve rapidly to meet any threat and hide under plain sight. by the time you realize you're under attack all communication has been entirely cut off.
@@ArcturusMinsk it's a satirical movie about fascism directed by the same guy who made robocop, and it's great, you have the actor who played Barney Stinson dressed in an SS uniform. Also, I am aware that might have been sarcasm, but it's the Internet you never know.
My favourite fleet is Hydra, just because of how they attack, the idea of killing one hormagaunt squad or warrior causing other nearby tyranids to attack the location means you can't just kill a synapse creature and flee in the chaos, since the attack isn't on purpose by the Hive Mind, it's instinctual
One of my favorite things I heard is that the Silent King, the Necron "leader", an ancient super advanced robotic race of Xenos, that themselves are terrifying. He is absolutely scared shitless of the Tyranids.
I've been watching this channel and Arches channel so much, during Lunch at my university my friend was talking about Orcs from LOTR and I said angrily, "f-ing Xeno Scum". I'm just glad that she responded something funny but its becoming a force of habit now
Hive fleet gorgan is a fun one, i can't remember if it's in the Tau or Tyranid codex but they'res a great little description of there conflict and how both sides went into adaptive overdrive to beat each other
Hi guys from Adeptus Ridiculus, it's been a true joy to find the channel after having rewatched countless times Bricky's videos on wh40k ! I've been binging the podcast for the last two weeks and really love the dynamic you three have. If a can afford a request, could you do a video on the grey knights ? I'm sure DK would love to know how they treat civilians...
The way Bricky talks about Iyanden and Prince Yriel with the tone like they just killed his dog really does have me worried for the Craftworlds and Phoenix lord episodes... That said, love you guys!
I’m a little bit upset nids are so good as a nids player right now, but luckily the other players at my store know I play them because I’m a fan and I always go easier on anybody with worse armies. That being said I love the new relics and traits for all the hive fleets and stuff, they all seem super cool and are fun to run in game
I'm not a 'Nids player (Necron master race), so I might be wrong...but doesn't the Parasite of Mortrax also spawn rippers if certain conditions are met through it's ovapositer?
Yes. When you hit your opponent's command phase, roll a d6. 1-3 and you're no longer infected but you still take d3 mortal wounds. 4-6 you're still infected and take d3 mortal wounds. On 2 or more mortal wounds in the same phase, you spawn rippers that don't count towards you points total
You guys gotta do Devastation of Baal in the next next bookclub :O I did it while waiting on the Krieg book and holy shit. But the reason I'm saying it here is because it is soooooo good at describing Tyranids. There is a small side story with a tyranid and it is peeeeerfectly written!
I kinda remember a bit of lore for hive fleet tiamet where they harvest and regrow specific planets that have a cut off from any and all warp fuckery due to some giant pillers
you've been blessed by nurgle bricky do not curse the gods for your gifts! but speaking of bugs and infections, many people claimed interestingly enough to have had nightmares of swarms of insects like wasps during the first wave of covid
pretty sure at one pint the eldar of siam-haan allied with the dark eldar to stop two hive fleets fighting and combining their genetic traits, where the eldar resorted to destroying the maiden world the battle happened on to stop it
I think any hive fleets added beyond the big three was a detriment to the setting. The Tyranids are not scary when they get stopped by barbed wire and have in-fighting. The more you learn about the unknown horror, the less unknown it becomes.
