The fall of Cadia is the Halo Reach of 40K. You know the planet is doomed, but you still feel the pain everyone felt and the shock when it does fall.

To be fair, I think Creed being in Trazyn's vault is, narratively, less of a fate of eternal imprisonment and more of a way for the writers to stash him away until needed. I expect him to pop up with utmost tactical genius when he'll be needed - and when Trazyn's interests would be best served by releasing him, of course.

Yeah the most tear jerking moment of the Fall of Cadia is; as the shuttles were flying away, Creed and the entire Cadian 8th stayed behind, still holding the line. Hell in the Cadia Stands novel the evacuation of the planet was just heartbreaking, where none of the remaining Cadian officers realized Creed was still on-planet until they were high up in orbit, even Creed's staunchest rivals admitted that he was literally the one driving figure that had been keeping them united. Where because of the planet breaking apart, some regiments were either completely cut off from their evacuation sites, some had to abandon their gear and got ambushed by the Iron Warriors. Even more Guardsmen were basically abandoned because of the landers being 'full', some of the evacuation shuttles got shot down trying to escape the planet, and even worse were the landers who tried going back for more Cadians they'd left, only to never return.

One correction on Typhus and the Death Guard's forces: Typhus did not have the backing of the actual Death Guard, the majority of the Death Guard at this time is either preparing to or is attacking Ultramar in the scourge star systems. According to the Lords of Silence books the majority of Typhus' warband is newer recruits while the vast majority of the original Death Guard stayed loyal to Mortarion. Had the full force of the Death Guard assaulted Cadia with the Black Legion then its likely they wouldn't have had to crack the planet because of the sheer size and prowess of the main Death Guard Legion.

I think the reason why people see Abbadon throwing the black fortress is that he didn't necessarily know the pylons were there. So in hindsight yeah, solid S-tier tactics, but in the moment it's just being petty and getting rid of a really huge asset on a gamble.

Imagine if you will; An Alpha Legion list that involves arriving with no models. Then spending your remaining points in set amounts to roll dice against your opponent for THEIR units. You might turn more or less units so your infiltration might go hilariously bad and you all get gunned down like caught spies, or turn into a last stand for the other guy as 60% of his army turns on him and starts dumping shells on their 'own men'. It's a fun house rule that belongs in an era of Ork Lootas taking other armies' literal weapon options and Iron Warrior Basilisks.
