Features George Foreman vs Adilson Rodrigues and Mike Tyson vs Henry Tillman. Hosted by Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant, and Sugar Ray Leonard. Entire HBO program recorded on VHS June 16, 1990.
@@chubbycatfish4573 He did have a point though; Foreman did a lot of scamming with his cynical matchmaking. He made 5 million dollars to face Jimmy Ellis for instance.
You have to look at historical context always. At the time yes, Foreman did appear as a fat old guy knocking out cans. He proved his critics wrong but it wasn't obvious in '90.
Larry Merchant bashing George Foreman constantly about his weight had me almost pissing in my pants all George had to do was reach outside of the ring and give him an uppercut
All George needed to do was glare at him. Merchant 's just a would be Hemingway. He knows shit about boxing, neither does Lumpy Lampley. They're both overpaid cunts.
Larry Merchant was always so disrespectful of Foreman. I always love to listen to him talking smack about Foreman seconds before Foreman knocked out Moorer. It is better than the knockout itself.
He was pretty much disrespectful to everyone. Larry Merchant is just about the only sportscaster that I absolutely can't stand. He was terrible and so degrading and insulting.
@@1981lashlarue Joking, he has a great sense of humor bolth of them !! How about Larry interviewing Don King, "Ok can you answer that in 10,000 words or less" !!! hahaha !!!!
@@1981lashlarue Larry Merchant’s a polarizing figure no doubt, I get why people can either take him or leave him, but he was no doubt passionate & knowledgable about boxing. I always enjoyed hearing his take before and after fights because he’d give his real, honest, and many times harsh opinion in a poetic manner which in itself was entertaining.
I loved it when Sugar Ray said George Foreman is a breath of fresh air and was then asked “do you acknowledge Bob Arum and Don Kings part in his “resurrection” he just repeated himself lol. Brilliant humour from the Sugarman!
Man, that HBO intro takes me back to when I recorded fights on VHS. I always enjoyed their profile/vignettes of the fighters. Thank you for uploading these vids.✊🏾
You're wrong. What's causing the lagging and dropouts in this video is not that it was recorded on VHS, but that it was digitally encoded by a cheap ass computer that didn't have the processing power to handle a long video. It was simply done wrong then uploaded without a care in the world.

What you talking about. Larry is awsome, has beer around this sport forever, know more about this sport than almost anyone. So who are you to throw shit on him
@@jimmykarlsson2567 complacency is not an asset. Just because he’s been around for a while doesn’t mean he doesn’t say ridiculously insulting nonsense during fights. Like telling mayweather he would’ve kicked his ass if he was 20 years younger
The best thing about this telecast was the story of Henry Tillman. Proving all the skeptics wrong, by twice defeating a teenager named Mike Tyson. He captured the gold metal 4 miles from where he had grown up. That is a pretty amazing story for a guy who seemed destine for prison.
At the 31:10 mark Foreman says he hopes to meet the winner of the Tyson Tillman bout , that the public deserved to see a true heavyweight fight next . Both promoters King and Arum wanted the match as it was worth MEGA bucks . Only Tyson didn't and did everything to avoid it from happening . This is as close as Foreman would ever get to fighting Tyson , who knew style wise he had no chance against Foreman
@@oldironsides4107 I watch all these old Tyson fights cuz I love him but I believe that article I read. Basically after bummy Buster Douglas knocked him out, Tyson got crazy, and fully imagined Foreman could kill him (a distinct possibility, and closer to reality than the HBO commentators at the time.)
When Big George came back he was a man on a mission.....He was in his 40 fighting young men went the distance with a prime Holyfield and then at the age of,I believe 45 he became the oldest heavyweight champion in history...He is one of the greatest heavyweight fighters that ever lived..
Was awesome at 40 I think you could tell he was starting to decline every year after 40 though. I would have loved to have seen him at this age against Tyson or Holyfield to see if he could have competed at 40.
@@user-cj1tc8zi4e Big George in his prime would have knocked Mike Tyson out..Here is the reason why George was to big in strong Tyson being a short fighter would have had to work his way on the inside...And my his soul rest in peace like when Foreman fought Frazier...He would hit Tyson workig his way on the inside bum game over..And Holyfield oh my goodness it wouldn't have been a fight George would knock him out faster he was to big and strong.
What a night for HBO, two of the heaviest hitters ever headlining the night. This goes to show how long these 2 fights go back, this is when Mike tyson and George foreman was still boxing professionally.
I suppose Sky must have taken HBO's 'feed' as they call it. But it was Sky's commentators. I remember they had Tyson v Stewart live later that year as well. PPV didn't come into the UK till Tyson v Bruno 2 in 96!
The night I was born...I think I was born around 10:15 ET so this is probably the same exact time...so cool gotta get that poster. Loved Tyson since I was a kid.....would love to see a fight at this venue today or Caesar’s in general really sucks thanks a lot Stephen Paddock
10:55 Look at the physical condition of Foreman. The guy was a monster. If Foreman and Tyson had collided around that time I'm not sure it ends well..... for Tyson. Nobody hit harder than Foreman and nobody could take a punch like Foreman.
Tyson would have been too illusive for foreman the only style I can see Tyson losing to is a Muhammad Ali style where you stay on the outside... and what Lennox did in regards to backing up and throwing upper cuts
Rooney Tyson has a great chance of busting George up and maybe forcing a stoppage or a one sided beatdown with lots of grappling in between. But Bruno/Williams/Smith/Douglas Tyson gets bullied and battered
Look at the grimace on then L.A. Raiders head coach Art Shell at 26:16. Rough way to make a living lol! Foreman immediately proved Lampley's point with that clubbing left hook that put Rodrigues out of his misery.
Absolutely love the fights that you provide for our entertainment. But why o why do these videos always skip and stutter?? Makes them a little frustrating to watch
Larry Merchant was very dismissive of George during this period of the comeback. Then again, most media was right up until the moment he knocked Moorer out.
America's Free Market Doctor - Dr. Tommy McElroy can you imagine Larry today he would be so fucked lol. Just openly calling him a fat man ppl would lose it 🤣Larry such a dick I did love him calling out Floyd tho that’s classic
For good reason: George handpicked his opponents and avoided any fighter with even a semblance of a heartbeat. George wasn't interested in fighting anyone who could actually fight -- unless it were for a big-money title shot. And George "earned" his title shot against Holyfield by basically beating a bunch of tomato cans. And against Moorer, he was gifted the title shot; his last fight prior to Moorer was a loss against Tommy Morrison (15 months prior). Merchant was accurate in his criticisms.
What are you talking about Anthony? George beat Dwight Qawi and Rodriguez here who was ranked #3. Not every fight for a heavyweight contender has to fight against a big fighter every time
@@AnthonyJ74 Tommy ran from George though. And Merchant shouldn´t critizise George for getting the chance against Moorer. It was way above Georges head, and Moorer wanted one easy big payday. It was easy for 9 rounds i guess.
George was a lot better fighter at 38 than 45. I wish he had fought Holyfield at 38 to see if the outcome would have been any different than at 41. Although Holyfield had a legit chin so I don't think comeback George would have won a decision even at 38 would have had to have knocked him out.
Tyson's last fight before his prison stretch was a very tough decision over Razor Ruddock. In this fight although he fought bravely, Tyson was exhibiting signs of decline. The great footwork, head movement, and punch combinations were clearly not as sharp. Mike himself has stated many times that his prime ended that night in Tokyo. After taking a beating from Holyfield and losing his titles again, making money became his sole incentive.
I have to disagree. Ruddock was a heavy hitter and Tyson felt it in both fights. Fortunately, Tyson was a heavy hitter too and broke Ruddock's jaw in the second fight. He was a tough contender, but Tyson was not in decline.
Your right. Ruddock wasn't 50% of Foreman. George knew how to box, used both hands, had a power jab. I think that version of Tyson loses to Big George circa 1991-92
I remember HBO was not happy Foreman was fighting a ranked heavyweight and Tyson an unranked cruiserweight but Renaldo Snipes was the original opponent for Tyson a tuneup but kept pricing himself out and Tillman filled in .Snipes blew 2 other shots the second doubleheader was canceled and then Snipes broke his hand and out 2 years.
Arum and King had Tyson and Foreman on same card and didn't have them fight each other instead lol, it would've been a spectacle to see and broken ppv records.
I worked for HBO Boxing back then under Ross Greenberg. Tyson and Foreman were to fight after this doubleheader he came back for that reason knowing Tyson hated Foremans style a pure stalker. Tyson demanded a second doubleheader he was to fight Renaldo Snipes the original opponent intended and Foreman Francesco Damiani who had the new WBO belt not recognized yet .But King refused to have Tyson fight Foreman if he had any belt and demanded Damiani be non title.Tyson was beltless and Foreman went ballistic that Tyson will never get in the ring with me and refused the second doubleheader.Foreman offered Tyson 2 more fights when with HBO and Tyson wanted no part of him .
Them talking down on George wtf, he was in amazing shape in his comeback up until 91, you could see age catching up in 93 and 94. However, its George Foreman. He was able to beat up Shannon Briggs in 97 at 49
Tyson had a concussive punch that knocked opponents back and sent them flying. Not George. George’s shots just smashed his opponents down and flattened them.
Why do people have to get old. I would give anything for this broadcast team for boxing matches today. I enjoy the showtime coverage today but Jim and Larry with whichever boxer analyst they had sugar ray, Roy, George....then you got Harold Lederman. I miss him saying the score and sending it back to jim so much
big george at that weigh in looks massive!!! and to be fair considering hes 270lbs he looks solid size of his arms shoulders etc!!! if ya compare it to fury who also is 270lbs! foreman looks 300lbs atleast
One that no-one ever mentions is how foreman bowe would have played out,I wonder.Would have been seen as a joke at the time but in retrospect, given how things played out🤷♂️
@@vlLEGTxSQUADX how in anyway did tyson beat everyone in that era? Mid June early evening, outside, Las Vegas....who wants to endure 100 degrees as a fan let alone a boxer? I guess that’s why we don’t see fights anymore at Caesar’s.
Is it just me... or does Larry Merchant seem to despise Foreman and just wants to just run his mouth and talk down about him? I've never seen Larry talk so nasty about someone.
Yeah, but he is right. Those are highly paid athletes. Foreman did roadwork with a greecy bag of hamburgers and douglas grow to the unhealthy weight of 400lbs and fell into a diabetic coma. He is doing a bad job in terms of promoting these fights but that's not his job. He doesn't seem like a big fan either. He is not a boxing expert.laughing at his own jokes about dead dogs. He is a total mystery.
He was pissed at the criticism and harsh questions during the rebroadcast the following week of the Douglas fight. And part of the reason he left HBO for Showtime
@@melvynsngltn27 don Lied all the time, foreman was affraif of Tyson he even said it. Tyson ducked noone since he had nothing to do who He fights. But evander ducked Tyson after he got the belts from Douglas. Same did Lewis for years, after prison both had balls to fight tyson kid.
Christ George hit hard I could tell the whole fight that exact result was coming you could tell he was just waiting to kill the dude who couldn’t even hurt him
Cause foreman was 6 inches taller an weighed 50lbs more an he was alot bigger an stronger lol holyfield was too much for tyson an he was just a roided up cruiserweight
@@vlLEGTxSQUADX 235?? Foreman was 263 here, 257 against Holyfield and 250 when he knocked out Moorer, and when was wrist and hands important? Never ever heard of that in the history of this sport, sorry.
Holyfield looked like a only 200 pounder. i Think he is around 205 here.. other fighters cut weight when they enter training camp.. they cut around 20 -30 lbs , Evander in his youger Days up till 1992 was Always around 205-210, even in his off season buster looking around 255 here
Tyson fought some tough guy's, plus they trained very hard because they knew if they beat him there next fight would be a huge payday, between green and spinks Tyson was the perfect fighter unfortunately that bitch and king got there claws in, and he lost that head movement and stopped frowing those great combinations and excepted clinches boxing's biggest shame
I hope Larry Mechant apologized for his commentary on George Foreman. It was beyond criticism; it was mean and disrespectful. He had a whole lot of "crow" to eat when George defeated Michael Moorer. I love the story of George Foreman. He showe hope and perseverence...even in the wake of brutal critics.
Even Old Man George backed everyone up he fought so it would have been interesting to see a 38 year old George against Mike who was known for attacking.
@@joshuacrawford3491 Foreman is one of the most humblest people since he saw his light. i don’t buy that for a second. Foreman could’ve easily taken Iron....
