But he proved to be neither which made it all the more disappointing. The thing Tywin did wrong was that he misjudged his children. He didn't think they were capable of killing him as he was not capable of killing them. If you think about it if Tywin was truly ruthless ala Kaiser Soze he would have killed off his family and just started a new one. But no despite how time and time again Tyrion disappointing him publicly, Jamie refusing his birthright, and Cercei just being petty and small minded. He would have loved a son like Robb Stark who after his father died took up the mantle willingly and skillfully or a daughter like Margery beautiful and cunning. I think that is part of his frustration with his own children.

He had way less debilitating character flaws and was more responsible than someone like Cersei or Jaime. It is also heavily implied that Tyrion only turned to prostitution as a way to cope with the trauma of Tywin’s constant abuse.
Nope. Tyrion perpetuated his image and was consumed by idea of his short coming. Tywin no way abused him mistreated him in his childhood because when tyrion asked for casterly rock the rebuttal was so hard it was clear he said it the first time plus he didnt took much interest in his other children either. Tywin describes him as man of envy lust and low cunning which was def correct. He fked up so many things for dany when he was her hand , he wasnt as smart as people think he was , he was humane though unlike so many others

Also a character is only as smart as the person writing them. The reason Tyrion was dumb in the later seasons as Dany’s hand was because the writing in those seasons was terrible. Many other characters who were very smart in the early seasons became dumb in the later seasons such as Littlefinger and Varys. Tyrion from seasons 1 to 4 was definitely one of the smartest characters in the series.

I believe that, deep down (maybe not so deep), Tywin liked the Starks more than his own children. But family comes first so they had to go. Also, people tend to like others that they do not know as well because they have not disappointed, betrayed, annoyed, or disrespected them yet. With your own family you have a lifetime of disappointments and resentment to draw from.
I can’t lie Tywin had one good point against Tyrion owning Casterly rock, he had pretty good reason to believe Tyrion would just turn it into his own party palace.
The real reason why Tyrion wasn't allowed to own Casterly rock is that Tywin hated him because his mere existence as a dwarf is a living statement that the Lannisters are flawed (Which is funny because, if we take away appereances, Tyrion is the less flawed Lannister) and also because he killed Joanna at birth. The "whoring and partying" was just an excuse for Tywin to sound reasonable in his own mind

He dislikes Tyrion so much because he’s actually a reflection of Tywin, if only he hadn’t been a dwarf Tywin might have named him heir after all, since Jaimie never wanted it.
Dont pay attention to a man's words, pay attention to his actions. When have you ever seen Tywin sitting down to seriously discuss political moves with any of his kids but Tyrion. Hell after pulling off the Red Wedding he was practically beaming at Tyrion as he worked it out. "Not you" indeed. Sometimes Tywin forgets who Tyrion is and just talks with his proper heir as if everything was alright.

Nah. If you've read the books you'd know that Cersei thinks of herself as a female Tywin and as his real heir. She respects him more than anyone in Westeros.
I don't think so she rather seemed eager to impress Tywin as his true heir. She wanted that praise and proud feeling from her father(something most children wants)
@@chronikhiles They kinda show it in the series as well, back when Lancel offers to pray for Tywin, Cersei says something like Tywin's soul never needing help from anyone, and how she tries to emulate him by writing letters while making Olenna wait. You are correct, Tywin is actually the only person Cersei respects.
Cersei being delusional enough to think she's as competent as her brothers or father is perhaps the funniest thing in the whole series. Jaime was a better person. Tywin and Tyrion were better evil manipulators and killers. Meanwhile, Cersei paid for a massive redundant fleet with money she didn't have then handed it over to a f*ckboy just because he looked vaguely like Rhaegar, with said f*ckboy then immediately stealing the fleet to become a pirate king.
I mean, look at his children. Tywin is not an idiot. His eldest children are incestuous and his last born is physically deficient and tainting the family by action and identity. He knows this behavior from his own father. Tywin dragged his house out of the mud, only to see his children backstabbing his efforts. It’s a wonder he isn’t consumed by hatred.
Tyrion is exactly what Tywin made him. I'm almost convinced Tywin hoped for Tyrion to be more, but lost sight of where tough love ended and neglect began, and he resented his own son for it because he believes in his own infallibility.
I think Tywin projects his own shortcomings onto Tyrion. I think he’s angry that despite his son’s deformity he’s arguably a better leader/administrator than his own father.

Tywin dislikes Tyrion because he openly loves whores and takes nothing seriously. Tyrion spends his time in Tywins presence making stupid jokes. The one time he proved to be useful, he was rewarded with the Hands position and he accomplished very little, and threatened to rape Tommen.
@@jessp8238I agree Tywin definitely projects his own shortcomings onto Tyrion. I haven't read the books, but I've read that Tywin knew Tyrion was the most like him out of all of his children but because he was a dwarf, Tywin viewed him as the Gods' mockery of himself and resented him for it.
Most grave mistake Tywin ever made was misjudge virtues of Tyrion. The little Imp was the most capable successor of Lanister name, and yet Tywin was too blind by hatred and self esteem to see it.
Oh, Tywin. If only you loved your children, and taught them to love each other, you would have the perfect legacy you wanted. Cersei has his ruthlessness and his ambition, Jaime has his strategic mind, and Tyrion has his wit and his intelligence. If these three worked united as a family (Cersei as queen, Jaime as lord commander, Tyrion as hand) they'd be undefeated. Him being a terrible father but wanting to further the Lannister dynasty is both extremely ironic and the source of his downfall.
Tywin had the children who were beautiful (Cersei), brave (Jaime), and smart (Tyrion). Unfortunately his hate for Tyrion, excessive love for Jaime, and neglect of Cersei ruined everything for him.

The funny thing is all three of Tywin's kid are actually very successful. Jamie is one of the best swordsmen in westeros, but that's not enough for tywin. Cersei is the queen and house Lannister's biggest asset in the realm, but that's not enough for Tywin. Tyrion is smart as hell and the natural heir to Casterly Rock (since jamie is a kings guard and unable to inherit anything). He'll easily be able to secure his legacy... but again that's not enough for Tywin. Every viewer is always sucking up to Tywin: he is so cool, so smart, so cunning, so ruthless. He is also his family's biggest problem. The dude shows no love to his children, which in turn start doing stupid things, like trying endlessly to prove they are worthy of him. Endlessly failing. Endlessly dragging all of westeros down in the mud while trying to please daddy.
Jamie has a point, tywin does care what people think of him and does care a lot, soon as cercei says she'll tell he panics not just cause of the rebellion against his control but the judgment at court that he'll recevive because of his children he even gets annoyed and angry with olenna when she judges cercei, his hyprocrsys knows no bounds
I think you misunderstand his statement. Olenna is not among the sheep nor are the people that Cercei would tell. Sheep is not an all encompassing word for meaning everyone outside the family. It means all unimportant people. Once you see that he is perfectly consistent.
Tywin is a disingenuous hypocrite, everyone knows that, he has all the exact same personality flaws that Jaime, Cersei, Tyrion and even Joffrey have, he’s just better at concealing it then they are and smarter in the way he goes about expressing them, his egoistical nature does not allow him to admit or accept these flaws and so he projects them onto his own kids, which makes theirs even worse.
@@anthonyju6392 i think it's less about the people are more about what the accusation could do to the house - cersei and jaime's affair getting out would illegitimise their children and remove the lannisters from the crown, and similarly if cersei is considered too old to remarry it ruins possible alliances and makes cersei more of a nuisance to their family.
On top oif that we later learn that the Lannisters are bancrupt. Other people thinking they are rich is all that is keeping them afloat, and each of Tywin's waking moments is directed at keeping up that image.
Tyrion got Tywin's wisdom, Jaime his skill of battle and war, and Cersei his cruelty and cunning. But Tywin would have wanted one of them to have all 3 instead
Tywin was right when he said to Cersei that he wished that she knew how to manipulate (and control) Joffrey as well as Margaery does. He was also right on when he said that he doesn’t distrusts her because she’s a woman but because she’s not as smart as she thinks that she is.

The true ending of GOT is that Tyrion turns Casterly Rock into a whorehouse just to spite his father. He even puts a scare crow he named Tywin on a chamberpot with several bolts in it.

Tywin was a master manipulator with everyone, but especially with his children. Jaime, Cersei and Tyrion all desperately craved their father's approval...and Tywin weaponized it. He would dispense small gestures and tokens of affection if it furthered his interests, and then would snatch them away just as quickly since he knew he could keep his family under his thumb through being cold, distant and keeping them off balance. He is a very interesting character. I think in his own way he cared for his family, although he was more motivated by maintaining the pride and dignity of his House as he saw it as well as for his own reputation, while believing none of his children were capable without his firm control.
Tywin is Geoffrey's double grandfather, both from his mother's and father's side. It's a miracle he came out without missing any of his fingers, toes, and limbs.
I know I'm not the only one who was disappointed in how Tywin was killed off. First off, I'm biased because Charles Dance is such a great actor that he just delivers the best of the character he portrays. But the character, Tywin, is such a good character. He's the villain, of course, but he was definitely one I respected even if he had multiple shortcomings where is children were concerned, and it was his witty comebacks to other characters and that he was pretty intelligent that made me like the character so much. That being said, though a villain, Tywin shouldn't have died taking a shit.
Is Tywin right about his children’s flaws? Yes. Does he ever consider how much his parenting caused them? No. Did he ever consider remarrying to have more? Evidently not.
If Tywin had accepted Tyrion as his son. The Lannister would have ruled 7 kingdom for decades regardless of Daenerys Targaryen having 3 dragons + Unsullied + Dothraki Horde. These two together would have find a way to crush Daenerys. Also, I must say Cerise needs to die in this assumption before Daenerys comes to Westeros. Because one stupid can cause the whole team to lose.
Tywin and Tyrion’s relationship is just tragic. If these 2 great minds got along well, they could have created a dynasty that would last for generations.
I feel like Tywin respects Robb Stark more than he does his children. I mean I wish they met, and I am pretty sure Tywin would have liked him. Even Tyrion told him that he would like him. Imagine if Robb was his child. He wouldn’t even care about the others because Robb is just like him. Except for the part where he is honourable.
I mean Rob had everything, a good and fair father, a loving mother. Two sisters and a friendly rivalry with his half brother and a cocky best friend. Compare that to the Lannister/Barthatheon household and it makes sense why they are so fucked up. The only ones that seem normal are Tommen and Mycella and that's because they get ignored by everyone.
In the end, Twyin was just like his children. Senteces his only smart and loving child with manners to death and sleeping with his lover. Tyrion was probably the only good Lannister in GOT.
Tywin really had it all, but his obsession with legacy and (ironically) how others perceived his family and by extension himself, was his undoing. The North went to war to free Ned Stark, the West would celebrate the death of Tywin, Ned earnt respect, Tywin demanded it because of his position and name, he was too focused on the bigger picture that he couldn't see the moves other players were making on the chess board
I feel like Joanna dying was one of the worst things to happen to House Lannister. If she were alive I don't believe Tywin would have treated Tyrion nearly as bad and Cersei and Jaime wouldn't have been able to do their incest.
if tyrion was just a dumb little dude i dont think tywin would hate him as much, ive always seen tywin more mad at the fact that a near perfect son is stuck in a dwarf body, its almost as if he started off life as wasted potential
I never understood why Cersei was mad over the Loras Tyrell thing. He's gay. Cersei can marry Loras and still have sex with Jaime, have Loras stay in the capital to watch her sister Margaery, they can pass her kids with Jaime as Loras' kids, and Loras would be happy to play along to hide the fact that he's a flaming homosexual who doesn't want to sire children.
Jaime had his character development. Tyrion is unjustly hated even tho hes the smartest and always try to do the best for the realm. Cersei is just flat out dumb and too emotional.
