U.S. ‘most dangerous place’ to be pregnant: SCOTUS punts on emergency abortion

This week’s Supreme Court decision to delay ruling on a crucial abortion case is being slammed as a cynical move designed to avoid issuing an unpopular opinion before the upcoming election. The case centers on Idaho's near-total abortion ban and its clash with the federal EMTALA statute. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's scathing dissent highlights the court's failure to protect women's health, slamming the decision as “political chicanery before the election.” The decision comes on the heels of a study revealing a 13% spike in Texas' infant mortality rate following the enactment of its abortion ban. “We are the most dangerous place in all of the industrialized world to be pregnant or for infants to be born,” says Michele Goodwin, a professor of constitutional law & global health policy at Georgetown Law.

Do pregnant women in ID deserve emergency stabilizing care? WTH This is actually a question??? Why even use the word “deserve”? It’s not about “deserving” anything. It’s about access to immediate care to preserve health, wellbeing and save lives. It’s not always related to termination but if that is found to be necessary, it’s up to that woman and her family to make that decision. No one else including legislators and judges need to be involved. I can’t BELIEVE that question. Wow.

I’d like to know why and how ABORTION is stabilizing care. Behind so much of this is lies about what was really happening. People pretend that care for an incomplete miscarriage is an abortion and so women can’t get care for that. It’s an obscene lie. They pretend that ectopic pregnancy care is an abortion when it isn’t since ectopic pregnancies always end in the death if the embryo and internal bleeding for the mom. Women whose babies have died in útero also do not need an abortion. Their baby is dead. Can someone please tell me what situation requires a heinous abortion procedure to solve.

Instead of a 'free country', now wenhave to worry about being in a 'free state', because our country is becoming less free as the months roll on. God help us if Trump gets into office. In Kenia was a total abortion ban years ago. Result: Reason of death number one for women between 14 and 55 was dying with pregnancy complications and dying when having unclean illegal abortion. There is a reason that abortion was placed from so called angel makers and women trying in the hands of doctors. In all times, all religions, rich and poor, women did it anyway and often died together with a much to old child.

I'm enraged by these antiabortions who are so arrogant that they think they know more than a patient and their doctor. I don't understand what the issue is for these religious extremists. If they don't like abortions, there is an easy solution -- don't have one, but don't deny others the right to get adequate healthcare just because _you_ don't want it. I'm eternally grateful that there isn't a major religion that thinks it's unethical to treat cancer or high blood pressure, because half of the American people would die. I hope this crap doesn't travel across the pond to my beautiful Sweden. So far, abortion rights stand strong here, but one must always stay vigilant against all attempts to curtail civil rights and rights to one's own body.

"In my week 23 ultrasound, in the report, it says the baby is viable," Dorbert said.

Most Doctors work for medical practices and/or hospitals, so the issue isn't up to their individual "courage." Most ob/gyn docs have huge insurance costs, due to complication rates with babies. If they choose to take an abortion case to court, they could sink their whole practice. If they work for a hospital, the lawyers will prevent them from making that decision. Just one case could bankrupt the doctor AND their entire practice, forever. These laws were written purposefully to create chaos, fear, and paralysis. Pregnancy complications are common and can't all possibly be outlined in law.

The United States Supreme Court did what it should do and relegated the issue back to the state court, which ruled in favor of a woman’s need for an emergency abortion. The Supreme Court did what they should have done and we should applaud this. Activist of that stage should now approach their lawmakers to amend the state law to provide for emergency treatment to save the life of the mother. This is all good.

There was a case in Texas, where the woman’s baby died inside of her and she didn’t know and the doctors would not operate on her to remove the fetus and she almost died of an infection - that’s disgraceful to cause that much suffering to a human being for no reason at all other than controlling women in the name of the Bible.
