10 years ago, a fallen New Zealand soldier was found in Flanders Fields and was reburied at Messines Rigde Cemetary. There was also a Haka performed for this unknown soldier, even after more than 100 years. It sent chills down my spine . Real warriors, these Kiwi;s! We will never forget them!

So back story to this is our three warriors: “At approximately 9:20 p.m. local time, a Humvee taking a patrol member to see a doctor at Romero base in Bamiyan province was destroyed by an improvised explosive device. Three New Zealand soldiers were killed instantly: Corporal Luke Tamatea (31) of Kawerau, medic Lance Corporal Jacinda Baker (26) of Christchurch, and Private Richard Harris (21) of Pukekohe, who was driving the Humvee. Baker, a recipient of the Chief of Army Commendation, was the first New Zealand servicewoman killed as a result of enemy action since 10 nurses drowned when the transport Marquette was torpedoed in 1915 (see 23 October).”

This is how we grieve for our people.

That fallen comrade lived as a warrior and left as a warrior. Lived an honorable life full of purpose with a cause greater than themselves. Shout out to New Zealand. A very valuable and treasured ally of the U.S and one of many defenders in the fight to preserve freedom, justice and democracy. This former U.S Navy sailor values you. (Salute)

Putting heaven on notice... A warrior is about to arrive

Our family friends boy was killed in the prior attack. We were invited along to the funeral and the army moved his body from town all the way out to the base with us following. The haka and the salute they done was so moving and breathtaking. The hospitality and support they gave to the family and all us who attended was outstanding and will never be forgotten. Everyone at the base was super respectful

I was only in for a couple of years, but I found the NZ Army a fascinating mix of Maori, colonial and British culture and traditions, with Maori predominating, in my opinion. In addition, there are a significant number of folks from other Polynesian peoples in the NZDF. The culture also seems to get past, to some degree, the Tongan vs Samoan issues, as well as Mongrel Mob vs Black Power issues. Which is a pretty big fricken deal.

As I watch this haka performed by the defense personal, it brings so much emotion as they walk their brave brothers and sister to the final gate of their job. Stand down brothers and sister, your job is done. Thank you for your respect and your tribute to our fallen.

Thanks for standing and for your respect for both the haka and the fallen, my friend. Something you may already know, but the NZ Army is called Ngati Tumatauena in the Maori language. It means ‘Tribe of the God of War’. It is a multicultural force, European kiwis, Maori, Pasifika, Asian, but it is United around the strong identity and culture of our First People, the Maori. Hence the haka.

I cannot wait to join the army and learn haka’s! To serve our country as these man did would be an honour and to participate in hakas like these would mean so much

The white Australians, South Africans Zambians, Zimbabwean, Kenyans and American and Canadian people would probably be embarrassed to perform a local African or Native American war dance but the white New Zealand people have totally taken the Haka and other elements of Maori culture to their hearts and the Haka is seen at funerals, weddings, sports event, celebrations etc with no embarrassment or feeling of being stupid or silly and the facial hair and movements in the white New Zealanders are the same as the Majority people. It shows how much respect the Maori culture has.

I'm told the New Zealand Defense Force is small compared to other countries with each death a deep wound to their comrades it's eazy to see the grief on the faces of their mates. But what a Haka I believe its their friend saying to heaven "We are sending you one of our own welcome them with open arm's"

Thank you for sharing this, I served from 85 to 94 and went to many a sheet hole around our planet in my time and served alongside many nations armed forces but one thing I remember very clearly was the brotherhood between us all, we may have come from different countries, wore different uniforms but we were one and the same underneath, bless you brother...just subbed!

Served alongside a Kiwi infantry unit a lifetime ago. Truly great blokes. I believe this lad they are celebrating here was one of their snipers. Fucking fearsome soldiers, great drinking mates. The uncle I was named for went to NZ in the 50's with his family from Cumbria. He ended up as the mayor of Wanganui. My dad (his brother) decided not to go at the last minute and he rejoined the British army instead. I followed in his footsteps. Never saw my uncle again or my cousins again. One of the great what ifs of my tenure on this planet.

If I can remember, this soldier was one of 3 who was killed in Afghanistan. My cousin served in the 2/1st battalion, he passed away in 2004 but the haka his fellow soldiers performed for him at his burial is one I will never forget. You would've thought the ground shook
