Such an incredibly moving and beautiful song. For those who don't know, this performance was made in dedication to the victims of the Omagh bombing by the IRA in Northern Ireland. 29 people lost their lives with almost 300 injured as well, marking one of the worst attacks of the troubles. This performance was also coming off the tails of U2's album Pop and the PopMart tour in the 90's. Both the album and the subsequent tour were not received as well as their previous work. This show and performance marked the return of U2 to their more personal, emotional, and spiritual sound that they had let go from the 80's. From here, very shortly afterwards, they started writing what would become All That You Can't Leave Behind. The world would once again embrace U2 as the biggest band in the world. This was preformed on a tv show here in Ireland called the late late show. Its was a mix of talk show and current affairs. You could have actors and politicians appear on the same night. This particular night the show was doing a tribute to the victims of the Omagh bombing, a car bomb that killed 29 people. Omagh is in the north of Ireland which is still considered United Kingdom territory. The bombing was carried out by the RIRA. This song had more resonance on this occasion which is why I guess it doesn't make it U2's stadium tour set lists but was perfect for this show given the tragedy, the division from the south and not forgetting that the song is written about this subject. The lyrics even mention walking on unapproved roads which was a thing in Northern Ireland during the troubles. The host talks to the band after the performance about where they heard about the bombing.
His mother and father are a mix of Catholic and protestant. putting that into context gives this song a lot more meaning. christy moore does a fantastic verson also.

I especially appreciate Bono's words at the end when he expressed the difficulty in explaining to children the foolish acts of adults, the grain of hope that could be gleaned from the terror is that the Troubles were over, that the people would go the extra mile to understand their adversaries and then go one mile further.
A beautiful song in tribute to all victims of Omagh. It was a terrible, terrible event, but even worse was the disclosure later that the security forces and the british rulers knew of the plan to bomb Omagh . They decided to let it happen.... This would remove all support for the paramilitaries. MY GOD, WHAT A COLD WORLD WE LIVE IN, SURE IT'S ONLY A BUNCH OF PADDY'S.......❤️🔥❤️
