00:33 - Ryan’s Thoughts on Mixing With UAD Plug-Ins
01:15 - Mixing the Bass
04:06 - Mixing Piano
08:00 - Lifting the Chorus
09:43 - Wrap Up
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ryan Hewitt is a Grammy-Award winning engineer, mixer and producer with a credit list spanning all popular genres of music including notable artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blink-182, Dixie Chicks, Third Eye Blind, Flogging Molly and Jamie Cullum.
After working in the music industry for over 20 years, Ryan shares his thoughts on UAD Powered Plug-ins: specifically, how he mixes with them, the way they have evolved his work, and redefined the sound of music for modern audiences.
Ryan first gives you an inside look at how he uses UAD plug-ins when mixing the folk rock song, “February Seven,” by The Avett Brothers. He starts by discussing dynamics, sustain, and controlling the frequencies of an acoustic bass while maintaining its natural character using the UAD SPL Transient Designer, UAD Teletronix LA-2A, and UAD Pultec Passive EQ Collection.
Everyone has dealt with an instrument that sticks out of the mix like a sore thumb. Ryan Hewitt demonstrates how he tamed a troublesome upright piano that was poorly recorded and just didn’t fit in the mix. Here, he reduces the harsh attack while increasing its sustain and then adding low end color with the UAD SPL Transient Designer, UAD Fairchild 670 and UAD Pultec Passive EQ.
Finally, Ryan Hewitt wraps up by introducing a dark, ethereal flavor to the song with the UAD EP-34 Tape Echo and UAD Brigade Chorus Pedal to lift the chorus of "February Seven" and add the character and epic chorus feel that the song needed.

I love that we are sharing our creative tips like this. Such subtle yet powerful techniques. Very inspiring. It seems that in the contemporary environment, there are so few artists with talent that the producer/mixer/engineer hybrid that has developed is the real creative genius in many cases. (I'm not referencing this band at all, just comparing the tracks I get today with what I used to lay down on the other side of the glass 30 some years ago when it was the performer that had to bring the timing, tuning, and creativity to the studio, not the engineer, who was distinct from the producer, who was distinct from the mixer, and mastering was some black art that went on invisibly to us in order to make something work on vinyl and cassette or cassette and CD. Today, the big buck, adulation, awards, and accolades are very rarely going where they ought to. It's so easy to try creative things with plugins in a minute that would have taken half an hour just to set up in the hardware only days. Thank you, UAD, for making this possible without compromising the quality.

Funny how the older the videos are, the advice is more appropriate. I feel the more we move to the future, we look backward for "that" sound/magic. glad i found this video. Literally, God send. the tiny things do matter!

Hey Ryan, I've been looking at the UAD plug-ins to use with mixing modern metal, aggressive music, and creating solid punchy drums... any videos detailing those genres with the UAD stuff? Great video, by the way, I appreciate the tutorial on how to use those plug-ins well. Keep it up and great mix!

now let's do something about that glockenspiel :P - I have been using UAD since the UAD-1 and at that time you had to use a MAGMA chassis if you wanted processing power! :) I always felt they sound very fluid and natural, for lack of better words. I was hooked right away. Really great sounding tools!

Hmm, I'm a bit confused. After he activates the transient designer I hear a bit of digital clipping on the bass, especially the first 3 notes!?

Its toally up to artist what he does, you don't need to use any mixing rules or anything (well basic ones which are logical, only if your ears are alien ones) but its about that fine touch of details.

That drink on his console! *buzzersound* Anyway the differences are marginal. I can do this with just some phase linear eq of logic and some vca compressors. :P
@sonofnothing

Madrrrrrrrrrrr I'm a new apollo owner, and the 610 channel strip, la2a, 1176 compressors are killer. I've never had any outboard gear, just usb and firewire mixers (onyx 1640i most recently) but the pres on the apollo 8 and the plugins are more than just marginally better. The reason it's marginally better in this video is because he's recording into 20 grand worth of outboard gear and the printed audio is already 90% it just needs a little kiss of this and that.

Is that version of the Pultec pro not available anymore? Only the legacy version?
@UniversalAudio
@UniversalAudio 5 лет назад
For the MKII version of the Pultec series, we left each unit separate to allow more flexibility in DSP usage. The Legacy doesn't use as much DSP so it can be all one plugin. Hope this clarifies things.

It's always funny how they show before and after a plugin in solo. After plugin it can sound worse, it can be not sitting in the mix or become muddier. But how cares? Right? Comercial should work

It seems to be there to begin with. Maybe in the transfer in...

Adding warmth to this organic and acoustically oriented mix may involve artful "flavored" distortion. My guess is that SPL's Transient Designer did this with its "saturation" effect that added some harmonic distortion to the engineer's mix taste.

Great tips but this track would sound so much better without that modern rock aggressiveness that you reference in the very beginning. It just dates it immediately.
