UAD -2 vs UADx: Unison Difference?

People are saying the UAD-2 and the new native UADx are the exact same, that they null, and there are no differences. But, my real world VO question is, does that account for UAD-2 running through the Unison slot vs UADx? So, let's do a side by side and see if Unison makes a difference. You may be surprised.
Signal from the mic is split with mic splitter, then fed into two separate interface inputs.

I think it’s the latency that’s making the difference. I did a side by side in pro tools with them all and I noticed a little difference in all of them. If I remember correctly the dsp version of that Vision channel strip had 1143 samples of delay and the native counterpart only had 55. I also noticed that the native versions all sound tighter. I’m not sure what it is. It’s like this phasey smear in the upper mids with the dsp version. Check it out for yourself and see what you come up with

That's interesting. I can tell you that Drew @ UA posted on GS that both plugs are 55 samples (gearspace.com/board/showpost.php?p=15927634&postcount=608). I definitely hear that "tighter" sound in the native plugs and I do think that difference and the upper mid smear you're hearing is how the UAD-2 plugs are programmed to interact with the hardware to create a more analog sound. Essentially, what people love about the analog sound is coloration through saturation and phase smear and I think that's why UAD-2 will continue to be presented as the flagship platform. I definitely am fascinated to experiment more because it's too fun not to.

Unison pairs the preamp to the microphone impedance which makes a drastic impact on the sound - this is why UAD recorded through Unison is leagues above other preamp plugins including acustica, arturia, etc (in my humble opinion). Unison is what gets them so close to hardware. This video title is just a bit misleading (based on the comments I am seeing about people replacing UADx with UAD plugins as inserts in their session) cuz UADx doesn't work in Unison. Unison is a completely different usage of the plugins.

It is different. I have a large audio only project using all Uadx. I then started replacing them with the same Uad2 plugins, copied correctly and all. The song sounds different now, timing isn't the same, and yes the Uadx sounds tighter to my ears. I was hoping that the transition would be seamless sound wise. I'm still experimenting, I will try to take a Uad song and replace with Uadx, see what happens. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Ugh. That sucks. That’s what I keep saying but everyone out there who said there is no difference is high from smoking all that confirmation bias.

When I export the same file with the same plugin from the UAD-2 Quad DSP Card and UADx Native, and then compare them in Wavelab, the two files are different. Latency is the same so that's not the difference. When I zoomed in a lot on the graph, there are small differences. By ear, they are almost the same, maybe I also perceive a slightly flatter sound with the UADx and a more spacious sound with the UAD-2, but it is barely audible.

Likewise! I just started looking into this topic of UAD vs UADx because I heard a difference in the Fairchild 670 (DSP and Native) being exactly what you described. Native = more flat, and UAD-2 was more open. I'm still unsure if that's latency or an actual emulation difference. Sounds like an emulation difference to me as of now.

Just want to point out that this can often happen with hardware and plugins, it just depends on exactly what type of processing is being done, especially if it is dynamic rather than static (like a compressor vs EQ move). It is hard to get 2 passes to be export exactly the same.

Yes, I tried with different plugins and all the exports with only UAD-2 are exactly the same, but different from those with the same UADx native plugin. The difference is very small, maybe it's just the different platform or something in the way it works, but I started testing because I think I can hear it. Either way, I don't know if it matters, since even if there is a difference, it's hard to hear. It's the music that matters :-)

this sounds like latency phase issues. if you had recorded both and put them underneath each other to replace them correctly, maybe they wouldnt cancel eachother out 100%, but much more than what you had.

That's entirely possible. I wouldn't rule anything out. Unscientifically, just to my ear, they sound slightly different but I never use the API anyway so I stopped digging into it.
