That's the thing these clueless, out of touch corporations haven't yet caught on to; the general public has widely wisened up to this crap. It's gotten to the point where most people can tell genuine cultural respect and reverence from soulless pandering. Sucker Punch reaped the rewards of actually giving a shit and respecting people, both as a culture and as consumers. Ubisoft is deservedly getting the exact opposite reaction, uniting people from completely different cultures and walks of life against them. 'Tis a thing of beauty if you ask me.

It's not about the fact that white people are making it, it's that I don't think the white people care about what they are making. The difference between Ghost of Tsushima and this is immense. Ghost of Tsushima was striving for historical accuracy in the presentation, they took the devs to the island, and worked with artists in Japan. GoT never pretended to be some "favor" or pandered to representation, it took itself serious as an story-based action game and an homage to Kurosawa films. AC: Shadows doesn't care about the underlying culture beyond using it as a costume. Rather than getting devs to visit Japan or work with artists or devs in Japan, they hired a Japanese immigrant in Hawaii who specializes in Japanese sexuality throughout history as their lead on the team to audit the cultural representation in the game, and then when you point out this is kinda messed up, they call you the bigot. Worst of all, Ubi doesn't seem to have a unique vision for what this game is... It's just the "next Assassin's Creed." They could have made this work so many ways. We've seen dozens of loved games in this setting. Problem is Ubisoft wants to treat the Japanese culture like Nioh's team did, but they want you to act like this game is the next GoT.

It should be noted that the box has the symbols for the virtues of the samurai, which includes both 忠義 (chuugi) and 義 (gi), which are separate words meaning "loyalty" and "righteousness" respectively, even though they share a kanji. On a computer, depending on your font priorities, if the website you're visiting doesn't STRICTLY state it's Japanese, your computer may display this character in the Chinese way EVEN IF your whole sentence is in Japanese, because computers share a lot of "character ids" between languages that use Chinese characters despite having different ways of being written.

God people can be so ignorant. As an (almost) historian myself the research with the boys everyone is up in arms about is obviously normal scientific research. She is a historian specialized in genderhistory from what it looks like and that is an absolutely normal work since historical research has become extremely specified regarding topics. It’s not about for example WW2 anymore it is about things like “how men in the trenched viewed men that stayed home and how this view changed when they where away from the frontline” so more specific topics.

The type of people Ubisoft hires is the problem. Sucker Punch-a Western studio-headed by Nate Fox and Jason Connell had a 160 person team produce Ghost Of Tsushima. They said influences from Japanese film and history helped navigate design choices and received an overwhelmingly positive response from Japanese critics. So much so, Fox and Connell were named as tourism ambassadors to Tsushima Island in March 2021 for spreading "the name and history of Tsushima through their works".

The funny thing is that Ubisoft could have just made a game based on Afro Samurai. Has a black Samurai character, the soundtrack from the Anime was done by RZA and it plays in a feudal Japanese setting. But it's based on a Japanese Manga, has futuristic elements and doesn't pretent in any way to be historical accurate etc. If you want to make a historical accurate game you can't be lazy, as now again with the letters. I´m German and I absolutely hate it when people pretent to speak German in movies like they are natives and you can clearly hear that they are Americans that just learned words, or that what they are saying is basically google translated. Then just don't do it in the first place.

I almost exclusively play Ghost of Tsushima is Kurosawa vision. The only part is the lip sync is for English rather than Japanese, so it doesn't quite line up. However, that's a minor issue and seldom interferes with a playthrough.

historians are still debating on that. considering he served under Oda he could have been Bushi considering he had his own land. the problem isn't that he's a samurai in the game the problem is people are saying with 100% conviction that he was which is not really correct.

@@Tanzenergise He would've been a great warrior, but not a great samurai. The samurai weren't just some armor and a sword, but a lifestyle. You basically had to be born into it, and decades of dedication went into becoming one. Yasuke was only around for a couple years at most.
