UPDATE: The runfile installer should support the 1080ti now. You should just be able to install drivers by downloading and running the runfile. The video might still have some useful info, but don't do the hard way with the extra PPA until you have tried the easy runfile way.
If you're having trouble booting from the live usb, try replacing the '---' after 'quiet splash' with '$vt_handoff nouveau.modeset=0'. Thanks to Outer Mind for this one.
Pretty specific title, I know, but this took me a pretty long time to figure out so I am hoping this will save someone a few hours of headbanging. I'm guessing it will also work with similar cards like the Titan XP, 1080, etc.
Keep in mind that this was filmed (mostly) on July 29th, 2017. If you're watching this in the future it is likely that the Runfile installer has the newer drivers that supports the 1080ti, so check that before you go through unnecessary complexity.
This goes quite fast so I encourage you to pause.

Thanks a lot for your perfect video. After testing so many procedures here and there and becoming totally depressed, I finally succeed to install CUDA on my laptop (GT 425M). Hope it work with my pc running a Tesla K20X as well. The main point of the process is blacklisting the current driver and NOT install driver that comes with CUDA toolkit package as you point it out correctly. Just those who want to use CUDA programing features applying two more settings is necessary. These two lines shall be executed in terminal: $ export PATH=/usr/local/cuda-8.0/bin${PATH:+:${PATH}} $ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/cuda-8.0/lib64\${LD_LIBRARY_PATH:+:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}} and everything is fine hereafter. Thank you again

Thanks, this worked for me. But I had to press ctrl + alt + F4 to get a fullscreen terminal instead of just alt + F4.

Thanks a lot for the "nomodeset" thing :DD I've been looking for a solution for days now, so you saved me a lot of time. I saw it nowhere else on the Internet, you should put your solution on askubuntu or stackexchange. But again, thanks a lot :D

Hi @Jousboxx. Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. Do you know if the current Runfile installer has the newer drivers that supports the 1080ti? I'm beginner Linux Ubuntu so prefer to avoid the challenging setup if possible. If not, I've got an Asrock motherboard. I noticed that you said you need to press e on the grub menu. I've tried pressing e but it doesn't give me the same option you have. What do I need to do to get the screen up to run the 'nomodeset'?

It looks like they updated the runfile driver to support the 1080ti on August 22nd. Here's the link to download it: www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/123103/en-us Please let me know how it goes! If the runfile does work then I will update the video title so that people don't unnecessarily go through all the extra trouble. As far as your GRUB problem, you only have to edit the boot entry if you get no video when you start your computer. It would be quite difficult to install any driver if you can't see what you're doing ;). If you do see the login screen/desktop/whatever then just skip that step. If not, make sure your caps lock isn't on, and maybe try moving to a different entry and then back again to the one you want before pressing e. Good luck!

this is the kinda stuff that keeps me away from ubuntu...figuring out all this cryptic shit...9 minutes for a simple gpu driver install...geforce experience on windows will just do it for me after i click it from a notification...simple 3 minute process. done.
