My tutorial on how to get the latest and greatest LMMS. Also, you can modify it if you want to/know how. You are encouraged to pause and rewind as much as you want. I hope this helps.
IMPORTANT: Wine 1.8 is no longer the most recent version. I would recommend going to winehq.org and getting the latest stable release.

Common problems:
If you're building on Linux Mint 17.x (and possibly other Trusty based distros, idk haven't tested) you might need to install libfftw3-dev, libfltk1.3-dev, libfluidsynth-dev, libfltk1.3
libfltk1.3-dev, fluid, manually. Depending on your distro you might just be able to use Synaptic or apt but you might have to manually search out the .DEBs and download and install them. If you do need to use this method, check out
packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/
If you're on Ubuntu (or a derivative) trying to build for Windows, you will get an error if you follow the instructions on Github. Check this thread for the solution:
github.com/LMMS/lmms/issues/2951
Again, if you have any questions leave a comment. I am happy to help!
Good luck :)
Interested in helping LMMS development? Here's two links to streams where Umcaruje showed me how to test out potential modifications to LMMS, know officially as GitHub Pull Requests. Be sure to watch them in order, sorry that the sound isn't great in my stream
