Traxxas UDR Discussion: A problem that I have seen nothing about. I talk about what the truck is, and what its purpose is and how I think people have mis interpreted the truck buying it and expecting it to be something its not. We try GPM Toe Links to see if the problem will be slightly remedied.

It's not designed to drive & wear like a prius. It's designed to be like a trophy truck, the tires will wear as such.

Angle wise, tire wear on the shoulder of the tire is a camber wear pattern, toe wear would be wear across the face of the tire. I think your problem is lateral force causing both positive camber and tire roll, both of which cause outer shoulder wear. I doubt the angle is causing it, more likely the very soft compound tires that hold no air are rolling over and wearing on hard turns.

Hi Andrew! I don't have a UDR yet, but I do run a Slash Ultimate. The front end suspension issue and tire wear that you describe are related entirely to "camber". I had to adjust the front end of my Ultimate so that when you rolled the vehicle over to the extreme it would reach when cornering, the outside tire tread surface would be entirely "flat" against the road surface, so that the outside tire edge would not tend to dig in and cause the truck to roll over. With a 4x4, you will get un-even tire wear doing this due to "tilt" of the front tires and the fact that they are drive tires. But it's a good trade off if hard cornering performance is your goal. That outside front tire has to have full contact and traction during hard cornering! I don't see that the UDR has any provision for adjusting camber, so you may have to live with the "nature of the beast" wearing tires as it does. It would be cool if Traxxas could add camber adjustability to the UDR though! But I think that your stuck with the tire wear issue even with the toe adjustments that you made. If I'm wrong, let me know, I plan on having my UDR very soon and your feed back regarding this is very helpful!

You’re talking about bumpsteer and Ackerman, and those under extreme body roll conditions. My guess is Traxxas is solving for multiple conditions with a focus on stability. You may fix tire wear to find the driving squirrelly. Have you tried adding foam inside the front tires to support the sidewalls?

I got the GPM adjustable steering links and all is good. Runs straight as a arrow! I do use the TSM. I do notice that the front tires do wear out more on the inside than the rear.

What you're trying to describe or correct is called bump steer. It comes from the tie rod being at a different angle or location than the lower control arm. While adding adjustable tie rods will allow you to change the toe, it will still change with suspension deflection. The toe adding while turning is typical of all Ackerman steering systems. The camber change while turning is from the caster (the more the lower ball joint leads the front) more caster adds more camber while turning, usually a desirable trait. I think rotatng the tires will help a lot. And to be scale correct you should rotate them 7x as often as you would on a regular car haha.

Sounds like your talking toe and camber but getting them mixed up. But your right it is toe in. All cars real and RC will have slight toe in for tracking.

I run an almost full vitavon front suspension, and it helps eliminate the flex that the plastics had. The stock parts flex under load.

Yeah, I got the adjustable rods by hot racing. The only issue is if the vehicle cartwheels the rods will snap at the threads, which is a good/bad thing.

Toe angle is good. As you throttle forward the wheels will tend to pull backward to straight (ish)
@jamalreid651
@jamalreid651 2 года назад
It's a Samberg issue. Toe is how close the front of the tires are in reference to the rear. Camber is the angle front top to bottom of the wheel.

My bad. Should have said camber issue.

Toe, camber, caster. Toe in toe out. Like pigeon toed. Camber is how flat the tire sits on the road. Top of tire in or out. Caster is the angle of the steering knuckle. This truck has zero adjustment for any of these when stock. Custom toe kits exist.

Thanks for sharing.. Have you thought of using a spacer. ? thx. I think you should have also used a measuring tape to compare before and after.

Gpm is very very low quality aluminum and has zero QC before parts leave. Try vitavon racing development or hot racing rc for parts. I have a udr that I'd put up against any other in class RC's.

You were showing camber at the 5 minute mark. There is no camber adjustment.

Designers/engineers consider performance and longevity of vehicle components. I suspect you know this already. As you mentioned, rotating tires will help minimize this issue.

Great video, have the same issue with my udr. I'll probably get the upgrades you got in this video. Can you make a video on how to keep your udr suspension so smooth? Or maybe just tell us what you do to keep it smooth. Just a suggestion can't find to many videos on udr suspension care.
@16abind
@16abind 2 года назад
I'll give that a thought.. actually an interesting point because I didn't realize how bad my first udr was when I bought it until I bought this one. I was like oh wow. It's actually way smoother than the last one. Definitly will keep that in mind. Also I don't know if that upgrade is actually gonna help the issue. Still all theory yet. But from the knowledge I have I think it will. Haven't tested it out yet.

It rolls over because it is very top heavy compared to the slash. The full roll cage the 2x full sized heavy ass tires mounted way up high. This truck will want to roll super easily.

So when you get the gpm front suspension arms ,the front binds up even more!!!! The rods!! 2 Allen keys 1 in the middle hole other in plastic part of rod end!!

What you described as toe in the beginning is actually camber, but later you describe toe properly. The toe angles changing during the suspension cycle is bump steer, it’s caused by the suspension geometry. The wheels pointed in different directions when turning is called Ackerman. Typically, toe in is used for more straight line stability. Since the truck is solid axle, rear is not adjustable, so they toe in the front to help with stability. Toeing the vehicle out would make it more sensitive to steering and road changes, possibly making it more difficult to drive. You’re getting that wear on the edge of the tire more so due to the tire rolling over on itself in the corners

Hello...It was patented in 1816 by Rudolph Ackermann (Germany) and is therefore named after him. Nowadays it is called A-Steering. With the Ackermann steering, each wheel of the steered axle is turned separately and has different steering angles. In the automotive industry, the correct steering angle is usually achieved using a mechanical arrangement, the steering trapezoid (see figure on the right). The correct steering angle for each wheel (also called Ackerman angle) depends on the dimensions of the vehicle (wheelbase, track width, steering radius). Best regards from Germany

The tire outside edge wear on front tires is due to steering and having to change directions of the truck.
@timwalter7653

The wear is caused by cornering weight transfer you will continue to have this problem

My complaints on this truck are the front bumper design, tires wear fast, the body is to thin, the pinion gear is weak, and the driveshaft kinda sucks and that’s about it

That’s called tyre roll aka turning at some sort of speed the tyre rolls and it give the car more grip my one does the same thing if you get a laser on it there dead 90 degrees

This video took the term ”over complecate” to a diffrent level😳 its a toy, and its a trophy truck with ridiculous amount of suspension, geometry will not be perfect thru the whole spectrum with such amount of movment, its not possible. And again its a toy…

Sure. But I think it's fascinating the engineering behind it. And it's a toy also applies to real life cars and trucks as well. Same exact problems engineers work on all day on your car in your garage.
