Wonderful, what a gem in these times of closed down societies! 🙇‍♂️ I just joined a Uechi-ryu/Ryukyu Kobudo Dojo online, and your videos are a great help along the journey. 🥋 We have Shotokan and Shito-ryu (I do Shito-ryu here) in out town, but no Kobudo so I have looked at some online possibilities and found a great Dojo that also had Uechi-ryu. 🙏 I hope that you may do more of these kinds of videos in the future, they are no replacement for a real teacher but they are as good as it can get without one. 🙇‍♂️ せんせい、ありがとうございます。

I love this video. I studied uechi_ryu in Mass under Sensei, Richard Green in Medway, Mass in the 1980's. I would have to drive 5 hours one way to go to a class. Is there any way that you could do any other katas in this format. I only got as far as Kanshu, but would love to get back into this just to get back into shape. Thank you.

Brilliant instructional Video. As an ex Shotokan karateka could some one tell me what those hand down spear hand looking strikes are. In the past I have done a Goju style of Sanchin where the strikes / blocks are with fists. At 71 my asthma is bad and I thought Sanchin would be a good exercise for me
@atoms1973
@atoms1973 11 лет назад
Traditionally Sanchin Dachi is taught with the front foot turned inward approximately 30 degrees to help encourage compression in the stance and a rooting sensation in the lower body. Many styles use it, although some Japanese styles in contrast with Okinawan systems, make it considerably larger, both on length and width bases. Essentially one should feel a 'coiled' sensation coming from the lower body whereby energy can be created, harvested and them channeled though a strike.

This is a fantastic video, clear and precise. I am a Wado practitioner and generally speaking we do not use Nukite a great deal. I have no desire to change the fundamentals of your Kata. However out of all the styles I have seen that have Sanchin Kata the Uechi form seems the most logical. Perhaps I just prefer the form Would it be acceptable do you think to perform perhaps a thrust punch or perhaps Ippon Ken... I would welcome your thoughts and advice. Also I am a musician (guitar) so would never naturally use the finger tips for thrusting. Kind regards
@veestormcourage
@veestormcourage 4 года назад
Goju-Ryu and Kyokushin already use fists instead of knife hands to perform the kata, so a lot of the difference is from the style of breathing: like the snap of the thrust, there is that snap of tension. Hardness and softness, reflection and absorption, right? One of my buddies is a boxer and he says if you form a fist at the end of the thrust, it helps with how the fist should be relaxed until impact (vs Goju keeps the hand fisted the entire time). This helps get a nice twist and snap in a punch. Won't win any kata performance points, but if your goal is to fight effectively, does that matter?

Why do you strike with the thumb if it is a heelpalm strike? Seems risky that I might break my thumb.
@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody
@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody 4 года назад
Thanks for your question BlackDonphin...you're right, it can be really risky, particularly if the hands and thumb haven't been properly conditioned and strengthened. The general idea of the technique, which is called bushiken (meaning palm thumb knuckle strike), is to be able to strike with both the hand, which is more blunt, and the the distal joint of the thumb, which is a a smaller and more pointed weapon, simultaneously. Technically, almost all strikes that look like palm-style strikes are actually this bushiken strike. Nagiri-game play a big role in developing this weapon. Hope this is helpful.
@BD90..
@BD90.. 4 года назад
@@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody Yes that makes sense. But how do we condition the thumb? And is it a good idea to do this if you might have arthritis in the family?
@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody
@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody 4 года назад
@@BD90.. The strengthening component can be done with gripping jar and to develop the opponens pollicis muscles, which support the thumbs "weaponize" posture. The percussive conditioning aspect can be done with a number of different methods, from using one's own hands and striking the bushiken with the palm of the opposite hand, to makiwara training for more conditioning individuals. The question about whether or not to do it is another topic altogether, and I always recommend that students make these decisions based on a number of personal factors. If a person has issues with their hands, I would discourage then from further conditioning and in an effort to limit agitation to whatever problems already exist. But the "plain" palm strike, as I'm sure you already know, can be very powerful on its own.
@BD90..
@BD90.. 4 года назад
@@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody Ye I am going to avoid strikes with my fingers and thumb. But conditioning my first,palm should be ok. The jars could be ok too. I really appreciate the only classes.....they are very helpful for me as Okinawan Karate is rare if not impossible to find. I do not want to train Shotokan or the Japanese styles if I can avoid it. I think the closest thing I can find to Uechi Ryu is Kyukoshinkai. I personally don't like Sport karate but the rather the traditional karate

I see that you have the other parts of the other Katas in other videos. In these times now you have a different focus for your dojo and students. Do you think that you may in the future create training instructions for Kanshu, Seichin, Seisan, Seiryu, Kanchin and Sanseiryu in the same video style that you have done for Sanchin and Kanshiwa? Are there any important points that you need to pay attention to in order to protect your knee? I know that you already made a video on basic stances. But this video does not cover sanchin dachi. Hi, in your opinion when one is in sanchin dachi and assumes sanchin no kamae or hirate (kamae or uke), lead /front and rear arms are in the line or not (like It happens normally)? Thanks
@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody
Good question, sir. I think it depends on the context. When practicing sanchin kata for example, the arms are virtually always aligned relative to the body's frontal plane, meaning one arm does not extend further away than the other. However, when performing other kata, you tend to see far more variability in these positions. Some teachers prefer it one way while others prefer it another. Personally I think it's more of a "stylistic" nuance and not really something that fundamentally changes the effectiveness or function of the position. In Okinawa I've seen lots variations in these positions from one dojo to the next, but I think they both fine. Hopefully I'm understanding your question correctly and this answer has been helpful.

He's "sipping" air. Like weight-lifters. You need a master. This is a very tough kata to perform and learn, it takes years to perfect it. It is said that many of Chojun Miyagi's (founder of gojuryu) quit while learning sanchin, because of the gruelling nature of the practice. It's the same with Uechi ryu. Improper learning or practice can cause stroke, hypertension, piles and so on, so please be careful.

After years of training in a traditional dojo. Uechi ryu is more complex than ANY video can come close to. You are missing many aspects. Sensei kiohyde shinjo, Sensei Gushi rest in peace. I was practicing kata. He came to me and with a hard voice and said tora eyes.....

Sanchin is meant to be done with strong breathing, and huge muscle contractions, so the most part of this is useless and ineffective. Sanchin is always trained with sensei, and it can't be learnt over youtube, because it can lead to serious lung and heart damage, even death.

+Alexei Ivanovich Yeah, this is bad. People also thinks this is a kata which teach fighting moves. LOL. This is breathing training, use it in real fight is stupic, just like use push up in real fight @.@.

+Alexei Ivanovich Look like in Uechi, they use only nose for breathing and focus on other things, not strong moves, but fast and flexible moves, so we cant listen breathing sound and it moves are fast, but still, how many guys know this just by watching, right ? I still think teach this on RU-vid is a bad ideal.

No actually Sanchin was not always meant to be done with strong breathing. That is unique to Goju-Ryu and other related styles. Sanchin was originally done with fast movements and light fast breathing. This is the way it is still practiced in Uechi Ryu. Chojun Miyagi decided to introduce closed fists and slow, strong breathing.

Definitely the fastest version of Sanchin that I've ever seen! I mainly want to learn the moves so that I can concentrate on the other aspects when I'm actually at my Goju Ryu class so it's good that RU-vid has the slow motion settings. Be interesting watching this guy do Tai Chi or Yoga lol.

Originally, Sanchin was NOT a dynamic tension exercise. Uechi Sanchin uses natural breathing, not the forced breathing of Goju Sanchin. It is intended to train proper body dynamics that power the techniques to be found in the other Kata. Uechi is a "soft" Sanchin as opposed to Goju's "hard" Sanchin for power training rather than sheer strength.

i really thought by this time. bjj judo thai boxing would have put this useless crap out of buisness. i studied uechi ryu for 10 yrs.you wont use 90 percent of this stuff. its just a cardio workout.the nice white gi and the fake japenese accent will end up burying you in a real fight

That's because only idiots would literally take all these teachings into a real street fight, literally fighting how they're taught. The point is to incorporate the style with your own in a real fight.

These teachings merely teach basic stances, breathing techniques, and discipline.

Most practitioners of Okinawan karate-do see Sanchin training as an exercise designed to explore the self - mentally, physically and spiritually. Those who study it sincerely know that it can develop many things, however, it's not an exercise designed to teach one how to fight others; but rather, how to overcome the self.
